Firing incident, mild lathi charge reported; Akalis protest police highhandedness

The Zila Parishad and Block Samiti elections were conducted amidst allegations of bogus polling and booth capturing, besides incidents of violence, at many polling-stations here today. A majority of incidents occurred at the places that were dominated by Akali workers.

50 pc turnout in civic bodies poll
SAS Nagar, June 9
Barring stray incidents of alleged bogus voting and complaints of the voters not being allowed to exercise their franchise, the voting for the Zila Parishad and the Panchayat Samiti elections today went off peacefully at polling stations in the Kharar and Majri blocks.

Cop’s daughter commits suicide
Chandigarh, June 9
Geeta (21), a daughter of an Assistant Sub-Inspector with the Chandigarh Police, Mr Baldev Singh, committed “suicide” at her residence in Sector 26, here yesterday. The body was cremated without a post-mortem. The police has not found any suicide note, said police sources and father of the victim.

The Residents Welfare Association of Sector 40 D has urged the Chandigarh Administration to revoke its order on allotment of site to a public school in Sector 40-D.

At least 1000 persons in the Housing Board EWS Colony, Dhanas, have been suffering an erratic electric and water supply for the past 10 to 15 days.

Man found dead on road
Chandigarh, June 9
An unidentified man in his 20s was found dead on the Ambala-Chandigarh road in Sector 31 here on Sunday evening. A PCR gypsy noticed the man lying on the road and took him to the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, where he was declared brought dead.

Parents enter children’s mould

The day at Sant Namdev Bhawan, Sector 21, was about something very unique. Taking the lead all through were parents of children attending a theatre workshop at the bhawan for about a fortnight now. As elders took the centrestage, they dropped all inhibitions to let the child in them play and rejoice.

Tennis trials from June 17
Chandigarh, June 9
The AITA Mini-Junior and Sub-Junior Inter-State Tennis Championship, 2002, for boys and girls (under-14 and under-16) will be held in Chennai from July 21 to 26. Chandigarh will participate in this championship. The CLTA will hold the trials for the selection of the team — three boys and three girls in each age group — on June 17 and 18.
