300 examined at eye camp

Chandigarh, June 9
As many as 300 persons were examined at a free eye camp organised by The Tribune Youth Club at Tribune Model School here today.

Eye problems like reflective error, cataract glaucoma etc were detected during the check-up. Others who were already undergoing treatment for eye problems were guided by a team of doctors comprising Dr Jatinder Singh, Dr Pawan Sharma, Dr Niti Aggarwal, Dr Rakesh Gupta and Dr T.S. Sandhu. Medical services were sponsored by the Ophthalcare Society, Mohali.

Tennis trials from June 17

The AITA Mini-Junior and Sub-Junior Inter-State Tennis Championship, 2002, for boys and girls (under-14 and under-16) will be held in Chennai from July 21 to 26. Chandigarh will participate in this championship. The CLTA will hold the trials for the selection of the team — three boys and three girls in each age group — on June 17 and 18. The tennis players eligible to participate in the trials should report at the Tennis Stadium, Sector 10, Chandigarh, at 7 a.m. Players born between January 1, 1986, and December 31, 1989 will be eligible to participate in under-16 age group and those born between January 1, 1988, and December 31, 1991, for the under-14.

Throwball trials

The Chandigarh Amateur Throwball Association is scheduled to organise trials for the junior section (boys and girls) at Shishu Niketan School on June 10 at 4.30 p.m. for the 12th Junior National Throwball Championship held at Shimla from June 23 to 26. Only players born after July 1, 1983, are eligible to take part in the trials.

Fine knock by Mongia

Chandigarh, June 9
Fine performance by Harit Sharma (six for 21) and Dinesh Mongia (71) enabled Leaders Cricket Club to beat AG Punjabi XI by three wickets and win the final of the Chandigarh League Cricket Tournament at the Cricket Stadium, Sector 16, here today.

Electing to bat first, the AG Punjab team were in dire straits as they lost three wickets for just 18 runs. Bhupinder Singh (85) and Ravinder Nain combined well as they were involved in a 60-run partnership. skipper Arun Tuli (36) provided the much needed support as they scored 100 runs for the fifth wicket. AG Punjab were in a comfortable position as they scored 180 runs in 36 overs for the loss of five wickets. Bhupinder Singh (Senior) scored 85 runs of 102 balls with 10 boundaries and a six. With his departure the team bundled out for 194 runs.

Leaders Club opened through the seasoned Dinesh Mongia and Sukhwinder Tinku. Mongia struck the ball to all parts of the ground with a crisp 71 runs of 70 balls with 13 boundries and a six. Rajesh Vaid (41 n.o) ensured that his team raced to victory in the 40th over. Lieut-Gen J.F.R. Jacob (retd) gave away prizes.

Brief scores: AG Punjab XI: 194 allout in 40.4 over — Bhupinder Singh (Senior) (85), Arun Tuli 36, Ravinder Nain 22, Harit Sharma 6 for 21 and Sanjay Dhull 2 for 45.

Leaders Club: 195 for 7 in 43.4 over — Dinesh Mongia 71, Harminder Kaku 24, Rajesh Vaid 41 n.o and Jaswant Rai 3 for 27.
