Non-Cong Oppn plans joint attack New Delhi, May 7 “There is no security of life in the state, no relief, no food and no medication. If the victims want to return to their homes from the relief camps, they are killed while their houses are taken over by Sangh Parivar hordes,” Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav said after an hour-long breakfast meeting held at the residence of CPM leader Somnath Chatterjee here. The meeting was attended by leaders in Parliament of the Left parties, Nationalist Congress Party, JD (S), RJD, IUML and Samajwadi Party. Mr Chatterjee said, “We will coordinate our efforts in both Houses of Parliament and ask the government to what extent it has implemented Article 355. We have our doubts. Inhuman conditions are prevailing in the state”. Mr Ram Vilas Paswan’s Lok Janashakti Party, which recently severed ties with the ruling NDA, was represented by its senior MP, Capt Jai Narayan Nishad. Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda was also present at the meeting. “It is absolutely clear that the Narendra Modi government has completely failed to provide security to the people,” Mr Abani Roy of the RSP said. The leaders said they would demand an explanation from the government on what steps it would take to restore complete normalcy in Gujarat, particularly after its commitment on Article 355 during the adoption of the Opposition censure motion in the Rajya Sabha. Asked whether they would also involve the Congress in this process, Mr Chatterjee said, “We always talk and coordinate”, Mr Amar Singh (SP) said, “They (Congress) cannot do without us”. Questions were also raised about the status of Mr K.P.S. Gill who has been appointed Security Adviser to the Gujarat Chief Minister. Mr Nilotpal Basu (CPM) asked, “What is his job status? He has no defined job. When the police machinery in the state is in a disarray, and Mr Gill has no executive powers, what do you expect him to do?” |
Ansari’s link with Pak established New Delhi, May 7 Highly placed sources said Aftab Ansari who was brought here on police remand from Kolkata earlier last week had confessed to this during interrogation and provided names of several officials and militant groups with whom he had maintained a liaison. He also reportedly had connections with two Pakistani nationals lodged in Tihar Jail, who were arrested by the special cell of the Delhi police and were sentenced to death recently by the Supreme Court. His interrogation disclosed that he was involved in a case of planting a hand grenade in front of Delhi police chief, Ajai Raj Sharma’s residence on Lodhi Road and had links with four activists of the Hizbul Mujahideen arrested recently. Besides, a case of cheating was registered against him in the police station of Sabzi Mandi 15 days back as he had confessed to have cheated a businessman of the area of a huge amount of money. The sources said that Aftab Ansari was first arrested in Delhi in 1995 after an encounter in which a notorious gangster of UP, Dinesh Thakur, was killed. He was lodged in Tihar Jail where he had met Omer Sheikh, a Pakistani national who was arrested by the Pakistani authorities in the case of kidnapping and murder of Daniel Pearl, a journalist of the Wall Street Journal. Omer Sheikh introduced him to somebody in Dubai who had connections with the ISI and Pak-based militant organisations involved in aiding and abetting terrorism in the Kashmir Valley. Ultras torch rail engine, blast track Ranchi, May 7 Road traffic remained paralysed but rail track at several places was blown up. An electric engine of a train was also set on fire by MCC and PWG ultras. Inspector General of Police (Railways) Niaz Ahmed said the MCC activists blew up about three metres of tracks between Hehegarha and Chipatohar in Latehar district and set fire to an electric engine at about 3 am on Tuesday. No one was injured in these incidents. The ultras also blasted a few metres of track between Bendi and Kaumundi railway stations in the same district. Rail traffic near Barwadih station in Latehar was partially affected following the strikes by the ultras, Mr Ahmed said. The two banned Left wing extremist organisations, the Maoist Coordination Committee (MCC) and the People’s War Group (PWG) had given the call for three-day ‘economic blockade’ of Jharkhand to end on May 8 against ban on them under POTA and the ‘corrupt government system’. Three cops of the Government Rail Police (GRP) were injured when MCC cadres opened fire on them at a train near Hahegarha in the Dhanbad rail division. The ultras had taken control of Hahegarha station and laid ambush for the GRP patrol party. The cops were later admitted to hospital and station was freed from the MCC clutches. In another incident, the MCC-PWG ultras attacked personnel of the Jharkhand police near Kamundi station in Latehar district resulting in injuries to two cops. The ultras also opened fire on a tanker carrying with 22,000 litres of milk. The driver escaped unhurt but the milk spilled on the road as bullet pierced tanker’s body. Panjab University had earlier formulated a pension scheme in 1991 , which was notified in 1993, but the same could not be implemented as no cut off date was provided in the scheme. As a result of which a large number of persons who retired long time had also opted to join the scheme, making it economically unviable. The minister said subsequently a revised pension scheme was prepared by Panjab University in 1999 superceding the earlier scheme, which was proposed to be applicable to those who would retire on or after March 31, 1998. There were 24 slum colonies in the Union Territory of Chandigarh as per the information made available by the Chandigarh Administration, the Minister of Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation, Mr Bandaru Dattatreya, to the Lok Sabha in reply to a question raised by Mr Pawan Kumar Bansal. However, the minister said no official survey had been conducted to verify the households in the slum colonies. The Town and Country Planning Organisation (TCPO) conducted a study on slums in 1995-96 and brought out a report titled The minister said an attempt had been made for the first time during the Census of India, 2001, by the Registrar General of India to collect detailed data about slum areas of the country and as per the provisional figures of the census the total slum population of Chandigarh was 1.07 lakh, the minister said. The minister said the Chandigarh Administration had intimated that the slum dwellers were being rehabilitated under the scheme called the Licensing of Tenements, Sites and Services in Chandigarh Scheme, 1979. |
