Hooda camp plays down reports on ouster
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, April 29
The Bhupinder Singh Hooda camp of the Congress unit of Haryana today tried to play down reports about the alleged move to dislodge Mr Hooda from the HPCC chief’s post.

The latest statement in this regard has come from former HPCC chief Virender Singh, who was quoted to have said that a reshuffle in the state unit of the party was imminent. The Congress faction leader is reported to have said that the result of the Yamunanagar byelection, which was snatched by the INLD from the Congress, had once again shown Mr Hooda’s “incompetence” to lead the party in the state.

Reacting to Mr Virender Singh’s statement, sources close to Mr Hooda claimed that among the Jat leaders of Congress, Mr Hooda’s stature was taller than that of Mr Virender Singh and Mr Shamsher Singh Surjewale as they were not holding any legislative position at present.

They said that Mr Virender Singh had lost in the Lok Sabha elections from Hisar in 1999 as well as the Assembly poll held in February, 2000, from the Uchana Kalan constituency. Mr Surjewale did not even contest the election while his son, Mr Randeep Singh Surjewale, lost from Narwana in the Assembly poll.

They added that important Congress leaders from the state had been given party posts to keep them in good humour. While Mr Virender Singh has been made a member of the Congress party’s central election committee, Ms Selja, whose name too is doing the rounds as a probable candidate for the HPCC chief’s post, is a secretary in the AICC. Mr Randeep Singh Surjewale has been made the president of the All-India Youth Congress while Mr Bhajan Lal, bete noire of Mr Hooda is the leader of the Congress in the Assembly as well as a special invitee in the Congress Working Committee.

“ If Mrs Sonia Gandhi is contemplating Mr Hooda’s removal, she would not have given the green light to us recently for the constitution the district Congress committees”, sources close to Mr Hooda said, adding that the HPCC would organise a rally in Sonepat on June 23 which would be addressed by Mrs Gandhi.

Meanwhile, the Bhajan Lal camp too claimed that restructuring of the HPCC would be undertaken in view of the “poor performance by the party in the state”. “The restructuring of the AICC has taken place and now it is time for a similar exercise in four states, including Haryana”, sources close to Mr Bhajan Lal said.

They said that four Congress leaders from the state, including Mr Bhajan Lal, were in the reckoning for the HPCC chief’s post. The others were, Ms Selja, Mr O.P. Jindal and Mr Virender Singh. “Mrs Gandhi has demonstrated her faith in Mr Bhajan Lal by making him the leader of the CLP. Moreover, at least 10 out of the 30 newly made DCC chiefs are Bhajan Lal loyalists “, they said while challenging the allegation that Mr Bhajan Lal did not have a “good equation” with Mrs Gandhi.

IAS officer shielding call girls?
Ravi S.Singh
Tribune News Service

Gurgaon, April 29
Who is the bureaucrat serving under the Haryana Government who intervened twice with the police for the release of a girl alleged to be heading a group of high-class sex workers in Gurgaon? Although the incident is a few days old, the development has come to light now and is a topic of debate. It appears that official circles have been trying to keep the incident under wraps.

According to authoritative sources, the police rounded up three girls, including a daughter of a senior police officer of the rank of DIG of Jammu and Kashmir, from a residence in the posh DLF City following a complaint by Meena (the name has been deliberately changed).

Meena told her family members that Peeushi (the name changed), daughter of a DIG, had drugged her to push her into immoral acts. A brother of Meena lodged a complaint with the DLF police station.

The police acted swiftly and on a tip-off from Meena’s relatives, the residence in DLF was raided from where the three girls were rounded up. On interrogation, Peeushi identified herself as daughter of a DIG of Jammu and Kashmir. She than called up an IAS officer in Gurgaon on her cell phone, and complained to him that the police was harassing her.

The bureaucrat allegedly reprimanded the police personnel on the phone and ordered that the girls be released forthwith. The diktat was abided by.

The personnel from the police station apprised the Senior Superintendent of Police, Mr Kuldip Singh Sihag, about the development, including the interference by the bureaucrat. The district police chief, much annoyed, asked his men to hunt for the girls.

The following day two of them, including Peeushi, were rounded up. The bureaucrat intervened again. A senior IPS officer from Gurgaon was approached by him, who talked to the distirct police chief and the girls were again released.

The police here is tight-lipped about the interference by the bureaucrat. None the less, a senior police officer, on condition of anonymity, confirmed the development.
