Hooda camp plays down reports on ouster Chandigarh, April 29 The latest statement in this regard has come from former HPCC chief Virender Singh, who was quoted to have said that a reshuffle in the state unit of the party was imminent. The Congress faction leader is reported to have said that the result of the Yamunanagar byelection, which was snatched by the INLD from the Congress, had once again shown Mr Hooda’s “incompetence” to lead the party in the state. Reacting to Mr Virender Singh’s statement, sources close to Mr Hooda claimed that among the Jat leaders of Congress, Mr Hooda’s stature was taller than that of Mr Virender Singh and Mr Shamsher Singh Surjewale as they were not holding any legislative position at present. They said that Mr Virender Singh had lost in the Lok Sabha elections from Hisar in 1999 as well as the Assembly poll held in February, 2000, from the Uchana Kalan constituency. Mr Surjewale did not even contest the election while his son, Mr Randeep Singh Surjewale, lost from Narwana in the Assembly poll. They added that important Congress leaders from the state had been given party posts to keep them in good humour. While Mr Virender Singh has been made a member of the Congress party’s central election
committee, Ms Selja, whose name too is doing the rounds as a probable candidate for the HPCC chief’s post, is a secretary in the AICC. Mr Randeep Singh Surjewale has been made the president of the All-India Youth Congress while Mr Bhajan Lal, bete noire of Mr Hooda is the leader of the Congress in the Assembly as well as a special invitee in the Congress Working Committee. “ If Mrs Sonia Gandhi is contemplating Mr Hooda’s removal, she would not have given the green light to us recently for the constitution the district Congress committees”, sources close to Mr Hooda said, adding that the HPCC would organise a rally in Sonepat on June 23 which would be addressed by Mrs Gandhi. Meanwhile, the Bhajan Lal camp too claimed that restructuring of the HPCC would be undertaken in view of the “poor performance by the party in the state”. “The restructuring of the AICC has taken place and now it is time for a similar exercise in four states, including Haryana”, sources close to Mr Bhajan Lal said. They said that four Congress leaders from the state, including Mr Bhajan Lal, were in the reckoning for the HPCC chief’s post. The others were, Ms Selja, Mr O.P. Jindal and Mr Virender Singh. “Mrs Gandhi has demonstrated her faith in Mr Bhajan Lal by making him the leader of the CLP. Moreover, at least 10 out of the 30 newly made DCC chiefs are Bhajan Lal loyalists “, they said while challenging the allegation that Mr Bhajan Lal did not have a “good equation” with Mrs Gandhi. |
