MLA favours separate SGPC for Haryana Chandigarh, April 24 “If there can be a separate wakf board, why should there not be a separate SGPC-type body for Haryana?”, officials here said. They, however, said that so far no one had given any representation to the state government for taking up the issue of a separate SGPC and added that they had only seen press reports regarding the issue. Significantly, Mr Nishan Singh, a Sikh MLA of the ruling INLD, said that he was in favour of a separate SGPC for managing the affairs of gurdwaras in Haryana. Talking to TNS today, the MLA from the Tohana constituency alleged that the SGPC was thoroughly politicised during Mr Gurcharan Singh Tohra’s tenure as the President of the cash-rich committee. “The development and upkeep of gurdwaras inside Haryana is being neglected by the Amritsar-based SGPC”, Mr Nishan Singh said while claiming that the Sikh community of Haryana would overwhelmingly extend its support if any attempt was made to create a separate body for looking after the Haryana gurdwaras. Mr Nishan Singh, however, said that carving out a separate SGPC for Haryana would require an amendment to the relevant Act by Parliament, which the coalition government in Delhi headed by the BJP might not be interested in doing. “Only a strong Centre will be able to effect such an amendment”, he said. Meanwhile, work on the trifurcation of the Punjab Wakf Board for the creation of separate boards for Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh has gained momentum, thanks to the fact that the splitting of the wakf board will not require an amendment to any Act by Parliament. Sources in the Haryana Government said that the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment had called a meeting in Delhi to discuss the issue of the creation of separate wakf boards. The meeting, scheduled to take place on April 30, will also take up determination of the assets and liabilities of the existing board, sharing of assets and liabilities among the constituent units, interim arrangements and other legal and administrative aspects related to the splitting of the board. The sources said that as the strength of the Muslim population in Haryana was about thrice that in Punjab, it would demand a lion’s share of Rs 40 crore with the Punjab Wakf Board in the form of fixed deposits in banks. |

Narnaul jeweller murdered Narnaul, April 24 The business community today overwhelmingly responded to a call for a bandh in protest against the incident. All markets of the town were closed. An FIR has been registered under Sections 302(murder) and 379 (dacoity) read with Section 34 (criminal conspiracy) in connection with the murder case even as no one has been arrested yet. Mr Hem Chand Jain (38), was walking back home at about 8 pm yesterday from his jewellery shop when he was waylaid by two armed youths. The distance between his shop and residence is about 300 yards. According to residents, the two youths first threw chilli powder in his eyes and then attacked with a kirpan on his hand which was holding a purse. When he resisted, he was attacked four times on his chest and stabbed about eight times on the back. The
assailants had parked their two-wheeler nearby, on which they decamped with the money bag after Mr Jain fell down unconscious. Alarmed by shouts for help from Mr Jain at the time of the scuffle, a passerby gave the two a chase. This effort was thwarted as they threw chilli powder on his face. The family members are said to have specified in the FIR that Mr Jain was carrying Rs 20,000, in the purse. Mr Jain was attacked by some persons about a year ago also while he was returning home. That time he had managed to escape. His brother Ashok Jain has also been attacked, but he too escaped unhurt. According to reports, his father had also been attacked about three years ago. Mr Jain is reported to have succumbed to his injuries on way to the local Civil Hospital. The ire of the public against the district administration and the police was palpable immediately after the incident. It was also evident during the procession of the body taken out through town today before going to the cremation
centre. The procession passed amid tight security arrangements. Slogans against Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala, the Deputy Commissioner and Senior Superintendent of Police, Mahendergarh district, and the SDM, Narnaul, were raised by the
precisionists. They alleged that the government had failed to control the law and order situation. |

He said that stringent measures should be taken to check the menace of neelgai which ruined crops. The Financial Commissioner and Principal Secretary, Forests, Mr Naseem Ahmad, said that with the adequate supply of water in the Sultanpur lake, migratory birds of various species, numbering about 60,000, had converged on that place. The Rohtak zoo was being expanded for which 28 acres had been allotted by the Tourism Department. He said the Wildlife Department registered 732 cases last year as against 581 in the previous year against those violating the wildlife laws.
