Suzuki to set up arm in India New York, April 2 Suzuki Motor will resume production of motor cycles around 2005 after setting up the Indian arm, the paper reported. Japan's third-biggest motor cycle maker will soon begin looking for sites for the construction of a new plant, which will produce motor cycles mainly for India's domestic market, said Suzuki spokesman Aritaka Okajima. The company said it had not decided on the size of the workforce or set initial output targets, but the Nihon Keizai Shimbun said Suzuki would start with an annual output of around 50,000 units. The new plant is expected to produce motor cycles with 100cc and 150cc engines, similar to those made at TVS Suzuki. Okajima said the Indian market had been growing steadily in the last decade and the company was expecting to see further growth in the motor cycles market there. In 2001, motor cycle sales in India reached close to 4 million units, up from 2.65 million units in 1995. "India's still a big market," he said.
"There's plenty of room for us to expand there." Helped by falling prices and cheaper credit, motor cycle sales in India have climbed more than 35 per cent in the past 11 months. Motor cycles made up 68 per cent of total two-wheeler sales last year compared to 30 per cent six years ago. An Indian economic think-tank has forecast that sales would grow nearly 20 per cent annually for the next 10 years. Last September, Suzuki sold its 26 per cent stake in joint venture TVS Suzuki Ltd. to India's Sundaram-Clayton Ltd., its partner in the 17-year-old automobile company, and has been considering going into production on its own. TVS began making bikes in partnership with Suzuki Motor in the early 1980s. TVS said on Monday overall sales jumped 30.5 per cent in March from a year ago, as its motor cycle sales surged 69 per cent. As part of the joint venture agreement, TVS Suzuki, which has a total annual output of about 350,000 units, will use the Suzuki brand name until March 2004, though it will end production and sales of Suzuki products by the end of this month.

Office rents dip in Mumbai, Delhi New Delhi, April 2 The study that also ranks world cities according to rentals says: “The Indian office market continues to slip further against global market rents.” Mumbai’s rank in terms of occupancy cost slipped to 11 in January, 2002, compared to the eighth position last year while New Delhi slipped to 32 from its earlier 28th rank. Mumbai’s occupancy cost dipped 29 per cent to $ 56.90 per square feet per annum against $ 79.8 in a year-ago period. The fall in occupancy cost was attributed to relocation of corporate tenants to suburban Mumbai, where newer buildings with amenities are relatively much more cost effective. New Delhi, at 32nd place in the ranking, had an occupancy cost of $ 40.84 per square feet per annum in Januray, 2002, compared to 28th ranking a year ago with $ 44.38 occupancy cost. “Offering high quality construction and state-of-the-art infrastructure for the office market in New Delhi coupled with lower rentals in suburban commercial market has brought down rentals,” it said. The report is a semi-annual survey of occupancy costs for comparable Class A office space in 155 metro areas around the world. According to the ranking, London (West End) is still the most expensive location in the global office market. London (West End) with $ 146.33 occupancy cost followed by Tokyo with $ 122.34 and London (City) with $ 112.3 are the three most expensive cities in the world. As per the report the prime office rents in the Asia Pacific region recorded a substantial drop over last 12 months. It attributed the decline in the office rental market to the adverse corporate reaction to the September 11 events and the meltdown in the technology sector. The report predicted that the global and the regional economies would not show signs of recovery until the second quarter of 2002. Referring to the Indian real estate sector performance that has been affected due to the negative global business sentiments, it said India has become an attractive spot for outsourcing. Moreover, enhanced level of activity in the IT-enabled services segment will provide impetus to the Indian real estate sector in days ahead.

Playgirl wants ‘Men of Enron’ to take it off Houston, April 2 Playgirl magazine on Monday said it is seeking current or former male employees of ruined energy trader Enron Corp. to pose in the nude for an upcoming "Men of Enron" pictorial. The call for male models comes one week after Playboy magazine asked female workers to pose in the buff for a photo spread dubbed the "Women of Enron." "It's totally about wanting to give the men of Enron an equal chance, and we're the only magazine of our kind that can showcase the men of Enron," Playgirl Editor-in-Chief Michele Zipp said in an interview. Playgirl, published by privately held Blue Horizons Media, has always billed itself as the female answer to Playboy, the men's magazine that is the flagship of Playboy Enterprises Inc. The two magazines are not related. News accounts portraying some Enron men as hard partiers have given Playgirl's editorial staff high hopes that the reality matches the reports. "We heard a lot about the men of Enron, and we heard that they're wild, so we'll see," Zipp said. Zipp said the issue's publication date depends on the response from potential models, who are able to negotiate how much they bare in print and how much they will be paid. "I'm sure it's going to take the men a little while to choose just the right photograph, so I suppose that it's going to be a week's delay before we get any responses," Playgirl spokeswoman Anna Briggs said the call for models was not an April Fool's joke, despite being made on April 1, a day long famous for pranks and hoaxes. How about a "Men of Andersen" pictorial, showcasing employees of the accounting firm that is in critical condition because of its role as Enron's auditor?
