190 cr earmarked for beautification Yamunanagar, March 26 He said money had been allocated as a loan from the Housing and Urban Development Corporation of India (HUDCO) and the National Capital Region (NCR) agencies. He said the government was determined to provide all basic civic amenities in the urban areas. Mr Goyal said the government had decided that the market and dairies which were situated within the city limits would be shifted to the outskirts for which funds had been allocated. Mr Goyal made it clear that the government had no intention to introduce octroi abolished by the previous government. He said the government was keen to make the municipal council and committees self-dependent. Mr Goyal said there was a move to allocate Rs 1 crore and 33 lakh for Yamunanagar. He urged the people to cooperate with the municipal authorities for getting better civic amenities. He said municipal works would be done on contract basis as in Faridabad. One or two wards would be given on contract for cleaning operation also. Mr Goyal said the government would not allow encroachment and action would be taken against those violating the law. |
Surjewala
for Rs 700 as MSP for wheat Jind, March 26 Mr Surjewala alleged that some influential leaders at the Centre were not in favour of raising the minimum support price of wheat. He urged Mr Om Prakash Chautala, Chief Minister of Haryana, and Mr Parkash Singh Badal, former Chief Minister of Punjab, to press the Union Government to increase the minimum support price. Mr Surjewala alleged that the government was pursuing anti-farmer policies and was ignoring the interests of farmers.
He said the Union Government had failed to implement the crop insurance scheme and had not announced the new agricultural policy. He demanded that the minimum support price of wheat be fixed at Rs 700 per quintal and that of mustard at Rs 2,500 per quintal. Mr Surjewala said to highlight the problems of farmers, the Haryana Krishak Samaj would organise a state-level rally at Kurukshetra on April 2. Amritsar: Mr Buta Singh Bajwa, Chairman of the Farmers Forum Punjab, has demanded that a minimum support price to be fixed by the government should be at least Rs 700 per quintal. Mr Bajwa stated that even after this MSP the farmers would find it difficult to meet increasing costs of machinery, fertilisers and pesticides. |

Punjab bound by SC verdict: Hooda Chandigarh, March 26 Mr Hooda said Mr Chautala was trying to take the credit for the Supreme Court judgement on the SYL canal whereas the verdict was based on the Rajiv-Longowal accord, against which Devi Lal not only launched a statewide agitation in the late eighties but also made his MLAs resign from the Vidhan Sabha. He said in reality the accord was in the interest of both Punjab and Haryana. Reacting sharply to the present Punjab Government's stand on the SYL canal, Mr Hooda said Punjab was bound by the apex court judgement. He expressed the hope that the canal would be completed within the time frame given by the apex court and the river water would flow to Haryana soon. Expressing satisfaction over the unanimous resolution adopted by the Haryana Assembly in its Budget session demanding a separate high court for the state, Mr Hooda said the river water dispute should be solved before the issues of capital and high court were decided. Mr Hooda accused the Chautala government of running the administration and the Vidhan Sabha in a dictatorial manner. He also alleged that the Speaker, Mr Satbir Singh Kadian, was not impartial. Referring to the INLD manifesto of 1998, Mr Hooda said Mr Chautala had promised free water and power to farmers. |
Rs 30 crore for kandi project Chandigarh, March 26 While stating this here today the Agriculture Minister, Mr Jaswinder Singh Sandhu, said the state government had released over Rs 24 crore to treat 8,000 hectares during the current financial year. Around 7,000 hectares falling in the districts of Ambala, Panchkula and Yamunanagar had already been treated under this ambitious two-phase project. |
HUDA, HVPN gear up
for summer Panchkula, March 26 While HUDA has decided to install 10 new tubewells in the township in order to tide away the water shortage, the state electricity department hopes to install two new sub-stations of 66/ 11 kv each at Mansa Devi Complex and Kalka. While the sub-station at Mansa Devi Complex will be energised by July, the one in Kalka will be made functional after the summer season. The sub-station at Mansa Devi Complex is likely to enhance the power supply transmission by 12
MVA. Sources in the Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam informed that with the energising of the sub-station at Mansa Devi Complex, there will be no shortage of power supply. Presently, there is one 220/ 66 kv sub-station at Madanpur village and two 66/ 11 kv sub-stations in Sector 1 and Industrial Area, Phase II, for almost 25,000 consumers (domestic, industrial and commercial). As many as 3,000 new connections have been released during this year. Meanwhile, sources in HUDA informed that 10 new tubewells will be installed in the township at an estimated cost of over Rs 1.5 crore. Last year, 15 new tubewells had been installed in the township in order to provide 17 mgd of water for a population of 1. 75 lakhs. This year, HUDA authorities hope to provide 21 mgd of water to the population of about 1.90 lakh. The town has three main water works in Sector 1, Sector 8 and Industrial Area. Two others in Sector 20 and the partly developed water works in Panchkula Extension are also catering to the needs of Panchkula residents. Besides 85 tubewells pump water in these waterworks for onward distribution in various sectors. Well-placed sources informed Chandigarh Tribune that the present daily drinking water requirement of Panchkula city, including Panchkula Extension and Mansa Devi Complex, is of the order of 78. 27 mgd and the present availability of water is 27. 48 mgd (including the water supply by HUDA ). Thus there is an additional daily requirement of 50. 74
mgd. The authorities agree that alternate sources of water need to be tapped. At the present rate of ground water consumption, water is estimated to last only for the next 20 years. It is not possible to augment this shortfall by installing more tubewells — which could further deplete the underground water, lead to overdraws and lack of charging. The township has been facing the problem of low water pressure for quite some time. Problem was more severe in two and three storey houses, where storage tanks are constructed on the top floor. Because of low pressure of water, the storage tanks cannot be filled on a regular basis and thus the inconvenience to people. Thus, HUDA has embarked upon a plan of zoning of water works in order to tackle with the problem of low water pressure in the old sectors of the town. |
