Bopanna eyeing double crown New Delhi, March 22 The big-serving Rohan Bopanna, seeded sixth, downed Meir Deri of Israel 6-3,7-6 (8-6) in one hour and 13 minutes to set up the men’s singles title clash against fifth-seeded Dmitri Mazur of Uzbekistan. Mazur edged out second-seeded Lee Childs of Great Britain 6-4,2-6,6-2 in one hour and 40 minutes. The singles final will be played tomorrow at 10 a m, which will be telecast live. Rohan Bopanna, after putting himself in the title round of the men’s singles, joined hands with Vijay Kannan to wrest the doubles title, beating the twins from Thailand, Sanchai Ratiwatana and Sonchat Ratiwatana 6-3, 6-4. This doubles title victory once again established the solidity of the Bopanna-Kannan partnership, as they had won the crown in the first of the F2 futures tournament series in Colombo (Sri Lanka) and then finished as runners-up in the Indian leg of the tour at Chennai. Today, there was never any doubt about the chances of the Bopanna-Kannan duo, as Bopanna, the more aggressive partner, was in top form to ensure that the title came back to the hosts’ grasp. A break each in the fourth game of the first set, and the first game of the second set, saw to it that Bopanna and Kannan did not have to labour unduly hard under a blazing sun to annex the crown. It was Bopanna’s scorching down the line winners, and searing back hands, with Kannan making some fine net volleys, that sealed the fate of the Thai twins, who too exhibited flashes of their tennis brilliance, but not enough to conquer when Bopanna was going great guns. The doubles title win fetched the Indian pair a prize money of $630 and 12 ITF points. In the singles semifinal, Bopanna was in a devastating form in the first set, though the fire in him was stoked only after he was broken in the third game, when he committed a few unforced
efforts. He broke back in the fourth game to level the score (2-2) and then broke Deri again in the sixth game to consolidate his position. In the second set, Bopanna slowed down his pace, and Deri Meir took advantage of the situation to hold his serve. The games went with serves to reach the tie-breaker deadlock, but Bopanna fired on all cylinders in the tie-break to smother the resistance of the Israeli in authoritative terms. Bopanna said had he maintained the same pace as in the first set, he would have won the match in a much quicker time. The victory was a sweet revenge for Bopanna, as he had lost to Meir Deri in Chennai. The second semifinal made a mockery of the seedings as Dmitri Mazur, after winning the first set comfortably, lapsed into errors in the second set with the second-seeded Le Childs displaying a remarkable transformation to lift the set. But Mazur roared back in the third set, with his aggressive all-round game, to wrap up the set and the tie, to sail into the final. |
England lose two early wickets Wellington, March 22 Only 30 overs could be bowled as the start of play was delayed until after tea after yesterday’s entire opening day was lost to driving rain and gale-force winds. When fading light ended play at 5.47 pm (1113 IST) England were 92 for two with Mark Butcher not out 24 and skipper Nasser Hussain unbeaten on 16. The Kiwis need to beat the tourists after going down by 98 runs inside four days in the opening Christchurch Test last weekend. The final Test is in Auckland next week. Kiwi skipper Stephen Fleming won the toss and despite a largely inexperienced pace attack sent England into bat. Michael Vaughan lasted 38 minutes before he edged Chris Drum to Fleming at first slip for seven leaving England at 26 for one. England reached the first hour mark at 40 for one with Marcus Trescothick making a good start on 21. Butcher, who cracked his right thumb in taking a catch in the Christchurch Test and had been in doubt right up to the delayed start to this Test, came in at number three. Fleming brought left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori into the attack straight after drinks to exploit some small cracks on the pitch. Vettori was cleared to play after doubt over his long- standing back complaint, and was the key bowler in an inexperienced Kiwi attack whose three pace bowlers have played a total of 13 Tests between them. Aussies register 19-run win
Johannesburg, March 22 Jason Gillespie ripped out South Africa’s first three batsmen inside the first 10 overs and Ricky Ponting seemed on target for an easy win in his first match as captain when South Africa, chasing 224 to win, crashed to 93 for seven. But Klusener, who surprisingly only batted at number eight, slammed 83 off 77 balls, with eight fours and a six, before he was last man out, caught on the long-on boundary off Glenn McGrath. Klusener hit 39 of South Africa’s last 40 runs. Ponting, who has replaced Test captain Steve Waugh as one-day skipper, admitted: “It was a bit nerve-wracking towards the end.” But he said he had always been confident that his team could defend a total of 223 for eight on a pitch which became slower as the match went on. “Overall it was a pretty good game for us.” Medium-pacer Ian Harvey followed up Gillespie’s opening burst with a three-wicket spell and Australia were in complete command when off-spinner Nathan Hauritz took a wicket with his fifth delivery in international cricket to dismiss Boeta Dippenaar for 51. Klusener and Nicky Boje gave South Africa a glimmer of hope as they put on 71 for the eighth wicket before Boje was run out when he was sent back by Klusener, seeking a second run after driving into the covers. Injured Warne to miss two matches
Melbourne, March 22 “Shane’s problem is not a major one but, with seven games in 19 days in this series, it makes sense for him to miss the first two matches which take place in the space of three days,” Australia physiotherapist Errol Alcott said in an ACB statement released. The 32-year-old Warne carried the injury for the final two weeks of Australia’s 2-1 test series victory over South Africa, during which he took 20 wickets at an average of 22.10 in 162 overs. Warne will be replaced for the first two one-day internationals by uncapped Queensland off-spinner Nathan Hauritz. “To get the call-up is amazing and a surprise but a pleasant one,” the 20-year-old Hauritz said in an ACB statement. “When I was picked for the tour, I was hoping to play one game but, if I didn’t, then that wouldn’t have bothered me because just to come on the tour with the group of players in this squad is a great experience for me. “I’m keen to learn as much as I can from everyone around me and it’s now up to me to show them what I can do.” Ricky Ponting takes over as Australia’s one-day captain after the shock axing last month of World Cup-winning captain Steve Waugh.

East beat Central by 141 runs Kolkata, March 22 The 25-year old Ingty, who claimed 3/57 in the first innings, impressed with figures of 4/29 during the day as Central were skittled out for 121 in their second knock to suffer their second outright loss in as many matches. Veteran spinner Utpal Chatterjee bagged 3/32 to cause further miseries for the visitors who are yet to get any point after two outings. They went down to West in their tournament lung-opener. Skipper Gagan Khoda (39) was the top scorer for Central on a dramatic day at the Eden Gardens when 18 wickets fell. Earlier, resuming at the overnight score of 102 for two, the East batsmen played irresponsibly and were all out for 211 in their second innings to set Central a target of 263 for a win in a maximum of 49 overs. East, who scored 365 in the first knock, had taken a 51-run lead by limiting Central to 314 in their opening assay. The hosts’ innings today revolved around Orissa batsman Rashmi Ranjan Parida who battled single-handedly to notch up 127 as wickets tumbled at regular intervals at the other end. Offie Kulamani Parida (6/39) was the most successful Central bowler. Beginning the day with overnight unbeaten batsmen R R Parida and skipper Sanjay Roul (32), the hosts lost their third wicket in the ninth over of the morning. Raul failed to negotiate a Harvinder Singh delivery and only managed an outside edge to stumper Rohit Jalani. Raul’s departure virtually opened the floodgates as Prabhanjan Mallick (13), rookie Subhomoy Das (1) and L R Shukla (0) returned to the pavilion in quick succession. The first two wickets went to Parida while J P Yadav trapped Shukla leg before. Undaunted by the procession at the other end, Parida played a responsible knock mixing caution with aggression and reached his ton just before lunch in 224 minutes off 154 balls with the help of 15 boundaries. Utpal Chatterjee (6), Sourasish Lahiri (1), Mark Ingty (0) fell soon after lunch. R R Parida was the last man to get out when he was adjudged leg before wicket to K Parida.
