Bopanna, Srinath in last eight New Delhi, March 20 But three other Indians, Nitin Kirtane, Shivang Mishra and Manoj Mahadevan fell by the wayside when the competition hotted up. After his marathon victory, it was a comparatively easy outing for Rohan Mopanna today as he made short work of Yu-Jr Wang of China at 6-3,6-2. The victory was some sort of revenge for India as Wang had ousted Mustafa Ghouse yesterday. It was a clean job by Bopanna as he hit some big winners to wrap up the match quickly. Later, Bopanna also moved up in the doubles, when he partnered Vijay Kannan to beat Alexander Jakupovic and Dmitri Mazur 6-1,6-2. Another Indian pair to progress in the doubles was Kamala Kannan and Vinod Sridhar who beat Prahlad Srinath and Vishal Uppal 3-6,7-6 (7-3), 6-4. However, Vishal Uppal, who had stunned third-seeded Mark Hilton of Britain, had earlier taken in his stride Christophe Bosto of Monaco 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 in the singles. Vishal had to stretch himself to overpower Bosto, as the latter was in no mood to throw in the towel, till the end. Prahlad Srinath conquered a mid-match slump to recover his poise and beat Li Chen of China 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Nitin Kirtane lost to Ben-Qiang Zhu of China tamely at 3-6,2-6, Shivang Mishra was beaten by Meir Deri of Israel 6-0,6-1 and Manoj Mahadevan was shown the door by Dmitri Mazur of Uzbekistan 7-5,7-5. In other singles matches, second-seeded Lee Childs of Britain beat E Dooyev of Israel 7-5,6-4 and seventh-seeded Branislav Sekac beat Peng Sun of China 7-5,6-2. In the doubles, the progress of India’s Ashutosh Singh and Gurmehar Singh was arrested by Wang and Zhu of China with a tame 6-1,6-0 victory. In an upset, the third-seeded pair of Deri and Dooyev were ousted by Sanchai Ratiwanta and Sonchat Ratiwatana of Indonesia 6-1,7-6 (7-3). |
Sehwag ruled out of Test series New Delhi, March 20 Sehwag, who was injured while fielding in the second Test against Zimbabwe here on March 3, had to produce a fitness certificate by yesterday. Sources in the BCCI today told PTI that he had not complied by the March 19 deadline and would not be named in the squad which is to be announced tomorrow. The sources felt that Sehwag had not recovered completely from his injury and would not be able to take the gruelling two-month tour of West Indies starting on April 2. However, Sehwag’s doctor Yash Gulati said the batsman had shown “excellent progress” and would definitely be fit for the five-match one-day series which will start on May 25.

Mongia, Yuvraj may get berths
Mumbai, March 20 The selectors will meet here tomorrow to pick the Indian team for 64-day tour of the West Indies starting with a three-day match against Guyana from April 5. However, selection committee chairman Chandu Borde told PTI over the telephone from Pune today that it would be difficult for the selectors to fit in both Mongia and Yuvraj in the Test squad unless injury forces any of the main players out of reckoning. With dashing batsman Virender Sehwag almost ruled out for the Test series due to shoulder injury, the selectors may gamble with Mongia, who scored a fine 159 at Guwahati yesterday, as he can open the innings with Shiv Sunder Das, if the selectors decide to drop wicketkeeper-batsman Deep Dasgupta. Dasgupta was found wanting behind the stumps in the two Test matches against Zimbabwe at home. Yuvraj Singh, who looked a totally different player in the last two one-dayers scoring 80 not out and 75, would strengthen the middle order. Though both Mongia and Yuvraj are considered one-day players, their recent knocks indicate they can play a waiting game as well. To back their claim for Test berths is their magnificent fielding prowess in any position. With maestro Sachin Tendulkar, leg-spinner Anil Kumble and seamer Javagal Srinath, all of whom missed the one-day series against Zimbabwe, available for selection, the selectors will have a little headache in picking the final squad. Borde said players like Mongia and Yuvraj could not be guaranteed a place in the Test squad. “They played very fine knocks and they cannot be ignored. But I understand there is a lot of difference in batting in the Tests and the one-dayers,” he said. Asked about the inconsistent form of VVS Laxman, Borde said, “Laxman is the sort of player who has to be given enough chances to blossom.”

ICC to make change in laws
London, March 20 The small but significant change in the standard playing conditions will allow the umpires to intervene in case a bowler employs negative tactics like the one used by left-arm spinner Ashley Giles on England’s tour of India earlier this year. In a bid to utilise the rough outside the leg-stump, Giles repeatedly bowled way outside the line to master batsman Sachin Tendulkar leaving him with no option but to pad the deliveries away. The Englishman even succeeded in having Tendulkar stumped for the first time in his Test career with this tactics. His success and the fact that the tactics was not bad in law enabled his team to justify Giles’ strategy but it led to calls for bringing a change in the laws to prevent such negative ploys. ICC’s cricket committee (playing), chaired by Sunil Gavaskar, has now made a change allowing the umpires to declare such deliveries as wide. The conditions relating to the law on wides has been proposed to be re-worded, removing the reference to the ball “going wider”. “This change will give the umpires the power they felt they needed,” Gavaskar was quoted by the Guardian as saying.

Bahutule puts West in command Pune, March 20 Bahutule, who earlier dazzled with the bat scoring 105, took four wickets restricting the North Zone to 231 for 8. North batsmen wilted under the fiery bowling of Bahutule and Irfan Pathan. The latter sent back three batsmen to the pavilion. Sarandeep Singh (69 no) was the only North batsman who resisted West Zone bowling hitting 11 fours in a tenure of 89 balls. It was Pathan, who scalped both openers Akash Chopra (24) and Vikram Rathore (17) and soon wickets started tumbling at regular intervals. Vijay Dahiya was sent to the pavilion by Bahutule before he could open his account. Earlier, resuming at their overnight score of 334 for eight, West were all out at 396 with Bahutule scoring a century studded with one six and 17 hits to the fence. This was Bahutule’s sixth century in first class matches. He also completed his 3000 runs. Sarandep Singh with his career best score of 69 and Ashih Nehra (1) were at the crease when stumps were drawn. Central 136 for 5 KOLKATA: East Zone tightened their noose around Central Zone, piling up 365 all out and then restricting the latter to 136 for five at the end of the second day of the four-day Duleep Trophy match at Eden Gardens here today. While East looked all set to earn the five vital points on the basis of the first innings lead, Central were left with the mammoth task of rattling up 229 more runs to overhaul East score with almost all their top order batsmen back in the pavilion. Irresponsible batting was the bane of the Central innings like in their first match against West Zone. East Zone made an early dent when captain Gagan Khoda was castled on the personal score of 14 to a beauty from Meghalaya lad Mark Ingty, who impressed all with his bowling prowess. Only Jyoti Yadav looked solid on 48 laced with seven sweetly timed boundaries before being caught by Parida off Lahiri. He was, however, dropped on 31. Central kept losing wickets at regular intervals with Rohit Jalani (one) and Rahul Kanwat (nine) throwing their wickets to A Barik and S. Lahiri, respectively, playing poor shots. J.P. Yadav, however, ran out of luck when his square drive was deflected off Subhomoy Das’s heel at silly point for Deep to collect off the bowling of Utpal Chatterjee. Yadav returned to the pavilion on nine. Earlier, in the day overnight centurian Deep Dasgupta was a mere pedestrian this morning adding only three more runs to his score of 109 when he was caught at second slip by Gaud off S. Pandey. Though Laxmi Ratan Shukla (40) and U. Chatterjee (22) lent good support to East Zone’s score lower down the order, a needless run out of Sourashis prevented East Zone from reaching the 400 mark.

India ‘A’ leave for SA sans Mongia
Mumbai, March 20 The three players, who played in the fifth and final one-dayer against Zimbabwe at Guwahati yesterday, would join the team later, coach of the India “A” team and former Indian Test star Yashpal Sharma told PTI before the team’s departure. “I am confident our boys will do well in South Africa as the team is a mixture of experience and youth. In fact, we have some players who have played for the senior team with distinction”, he said. “The most difficult part of the tour would be getting used to the bouncy wickets over there and once they get used to it, it will be half the battle won”, Sharma said. Yashpal Sharma, who had praised wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel of Gujarat and Gautam Gambir of Delhi during the team’s five-day camp here recently, said the team was well balanced and the boys were looking forward to an interesting series in South Africa.

Tuffey replaces Cairns for 2nd Test
Wellington, March 20 New Zealand are worst off, once again having to shuffle their bowling attack after the loss of the experienced Chris Cairns for the rest of the series with a continuation of knee problems They may also have to do without left-arm orthodox spinner Daniel Vettori because of his troublesome back. England have batsman Mark Butcher probably sitting out this match to give his damaged finger further rest, while skipper Nasser Hussain reported himself fit after hurting his hand during New Zealand’s second innings in Christchurch. The same can not be said for Hussain’s counterpart Stephen Fleming. He dislocated a finger during fielding practice on Monday and while he later batted with no discomfort, he said he was unlikely to field at his favoured first slip in the Test. New Zealand have drafted in medium fast Daryl Tuffey to replace Cairns and one-day specialist Chris Harris as back-up for Vettori. Fleming said on Wednesday that he had become used to having less than a full strength bowling line-up after injuries to all top line bowlers at some stage over the last 18 months. “While it is not ideal, we have had to bring in inexperienced bowlers to replace the experienced ones who are injured,” he said. “But whereas 12 months ago they might have been raw, now they have some experience behind them. “Chris Cairns is a world class player and we will miss him, there’s no doubt about that, but his absence puts the responsibility on others and often someone steps up. They might not be as dynamic, but there is some good quality there.” Butcher is unlikely to play his 37th Test in Wellington, so all-rounder Craig White may be called up to give the batting a boost and also do some donkey work with his medium fast bowling into what promises to be a stiff, gusting northerly wind for at least the first three days of the Test. Matthew Hoggard will get that job with the new ball, but his workload in Christchurch suggests he will enjoy the demand, especially with the chance of some decent swing movement. Hoggard’s new ball partner, Andy Caddick, has talked up England’s chances in the media by describing New Zealand as a “bits and pieces” team. Fleming refused to comment on Caddick’s phrase, perhaps playing it safe after he went public about the perceived lack of respect New Zealand cricket got in England, particularly after the Kiwis won the 1999 series with the final win at the Oval. The timing of Fleming’s comments was appropriate, giving a bit of bite going into the opening Test, but unfortunately for much of the game New Zealand could not deliver and demand the desired respect from the opposition.

JCT go down to Bagan Ludhiana, March 20 Mohun Bagan took control from the start and did make repeated forays into the rival citadel but could not breach the defence. In the 12th minute, Mohun Bagan’s striker, R P Singh’s accurate angular shot taken off a corner was saved by JCT custodian Baljit and three minutes later, Ameori D’Silva’s sizzler missed the target by inches. JCT made their first serious attempt in the 23rd minute when their star striker Stephen managed to dodge past the defenders and gave a cross to Daljit Singh who failed to capitalise on the defensive lapse. The first half ended scoreless. In the 52nd minute, R C Prakash produced a brilliant goal to put Mohun Bagan in the lead. Rendey Singh and R J Barretto weaved a good move, stormed into the box and rolled the ball towards Prakash who neatly placed the ball in the net 1-0. Mohun Bagan’s joys were shortlived as JCT fetched the equaliser in the 61st minute. Daljit Singh’s corner kick was deliberately left by Stephen and Hardip Saini scored an
opportunistic goal to restore parity. Mohun Bagan players went all out and after wasting some scoring chances managed to puncture the JCT defence line. Udhay Konar who was brought in place of Basudev Mondal struck in the 76th minute to put his side ahead again 2-1. In the dying minutes, Mohun Bagan could have increased the lead but Mondal’s shots on two occasions from close to the goalmouth were fended off by the JCT’ custodian. JCT now take on ITI here on March 23 while Mohun Bagan travel to Jalandhar where they will play against Punjab Police on March 26. |
