Kidnapped girl rescued, two women arrested

The Panchkula police has recovered a 3-year-old girl, Arshdeep, who was kidnapped from her grandmother’s house on February 25 noon, from Patiala, in less than 48 hours of the incident.

Plague scare drives people to hospitals

Rife with rumours of plague, city hospitals have a major problem at their hands. Persons suffering from respiratory tract infections are thronging hospitals trying to get diagnosed if they have any plague-like symptoms.

Disasters like the one that hit Kansal village a stone’s throw away from Chandigarh, could be thanks to there being no primary health care centre here. There is only a homoeopathic dispensary in the village which, “does not serve the purpose” say residents.

Dialysis machine for GH-16
Chandigarh, February 27
There is good news for those suffering from serious kidney-related problems. The city’s General Hospital, Sector 16, will be the third Government Hospital in the city to provide patients of kidney failure with the facility of dialysis at minimum possible rates. The PGI and GMCH-32 already have this facility.

PU to declare all results by June 30

Panjab University has decided to declare the results of all undergraduate classes by June 30. The tentative dates of declaration of results have been printed on the date-sheets for various classes.

‘Increase affordability of telecom services’

New trains announced for Chandigarh in the Railway Budget yesterday are not likely to start on April 1, when the new Budget comes into force.
Sources said the Jana Shatabdi would start running between Chandigarh and Delhi only by May or June.

Cong councillors hold meeting

Congress councillors here today held an hour-long meeting, apparently to chalk out a strategy to counter the BJP attack on it for allowing 2 per cent property tax on commercial property and 1.5 per cent on government buildings in the budget meeting of the Municipal Corporation tomorrow.

Bees attack lensman
Chandigarh, February 27
S.P. Biswas, lensman of a Hindi daily, was stung by a swarm of bees at the entrance to District Courts. Mr Biswas was here to cover the case of the Deputy Commissioner Customs and Central Excise of Ludhiana, Amresh Jain. The attack came when he was waiting for the CBI officials at the gate.

Apropos to a news item “waiting for the police to wake up” that appeared in the columns of this newspaper on February 26, Mr Sanjiv Nehra has clarified that Mr Anurag Aggarwal had sold off 100 original shares of the UTI to his client, Mr T.C. Goyal. He said, he was operating on behalf of Mr Goyal and that Mr Aggarwal was not ready to give duplicate shares issued to him.

Attempt to snatch briefcase
Chandigarh, February 27
Two clean-shaven youths, wearing monkey caps, allegedly tried to snatch a briefcase from Mr N.R Chauhan, a resident of Mani Majra, last night. The complainant was also assaulted by the youths which resulted in a head injury to him, said the police sources.

25-yr-old commits suicide
Panchkula, February 27
Failure in love ended with suicide. A 25-year-old man hailing from Bihar committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance in Sector 5 on Tuesday night.
Police sources said that the body of Rajeshwar Giri, who was working with a construction company as head mason, was noticed by his colleagues in a shed adjacent to the HAFED building.

Accepting a plea moved by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the UT Judicial Magistrate, Ms Gurvinder Kaur, sent Amresh Jain, Deputy Commissioner Customs and Central Excise of Ludhiana, to three more days of the police custody today.

3-day remand for Pakistani national

Mohammad Riyaz, a Pakistani national who was arrested by the special branch of the Delhi police for over staying in Chandigarh on the basis of fake documents, was further remanded to three-day police remand by the UT Duty Magistrate today.

Khushboo Kochhar, an 18-year-old student of MCM DAV College is the city’s proud representative among the 15 girls shortlisted by Channel V under its nationwide popstar hunt which attracted 2,500 entries. The hunt, which promises to create a five-member girl band on the ‘Spice Girls’ pattern, was kicked off in Chandigarh on January 12.

The PGI Governing body has in principle, passed that 25 per cent of the PGI professors can be placed in the bracket with senior professors. Interview for these 17 posts thus created were held at the PGI yesterday and the decisions will be ratified at the next meeting of the Governing Body.

Punjab enter last four in tennis meet

The Punjab team made it to the last four of the team events in the third All-India Police Tennis Championship, being played here at the CLTA Stadium in Sector 10. SM Sharma, a senior IPS officer of Punjab, was the star of the day when he won his singles and doubles matches.
