Decks cleared for casino in Haryana? Chandigarh, January 11 Official sources said that representatives from A 2 Z Gaming and Hospitality Inc of the USA met Mr Chautala in Delhi and made a presentation to him regarding various benefits that a casino would bring to the state. The representatives, who included an NRI, Mr Aman Uppal, reportedly told the Chief Minister that they were prepared to make an investment of Rs 700 crore for setting up a casino complex. The complex would generate employment for close to 17,000 persons, the representatives of A2Z, which runs such complexes in many places in the world, including one near the Niagra Falls in Canada, reportedly told Mr Chautala. Mr M.K. Miglani, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister and Mr Bhaskar Chatterjee, Financial Commissioner and Secretary, Tourism, were also present during the meeting, which took place in Delhi on January 4. The sources said that the representatives of A2Z were originally scheduled to meet the Chief Minister in London during his proposed investment promotion trip which was subsequently cancelled due the September 13 attacks. While stating that the January 4 meeting between the Chief Minister and the casino operators was significant, the sources said that according to a tentative proposal the casino was proposed to be set up on 50 acres near Surajkund, in Faridabad. The land would be sold to the casino operators by the Faridabad corporation, the sources said. Mr
Chatterjee, when contacted, confirmed the meeting on January 4. He, however, claimed that it was not a very significant one. “They did not submit any proposal to us in black and white for consideration”, the Tourism Secretary said. The Haryana Government has for a long time been toying with the idea of setting up a casino in the state as a source of non-tax revenue generation. It was first mooted by Finance Minister, Mr Sampat Singh. Subsequently, Mr Harbaksh Singh, when he was the Tourism Commissioner of Haryana, tried to implement the idea with the blessings of the Chief Minister. |

IGNOU starts degree course Panipat, January 11 The prospective candidates will have to pass a six-month course, BPP, comprising two papers — social science and maths — to be eligible for enrolment in the degree course. The only condition for enrolment in the BPP course is that the candidate should be above 18 years and as an added benefit to residents of the Hindi-speaking states, English is not compulsory for the BA degree course, Dr B.B. Sharma, Coordinator of the local IGNOU centre, told The Tribune. Dr Sharma said the examination for the BPP course was held in June and December and the session started in January and July. The admission for the July session was currently open, he said. Since there was no upper age limit for doing the course, it would go a long way in improving the educational qualifications of those persons who could not attain the requisite qualifications in the past due to adverse circumstances. Besides, it had been tailored to suit the needs of elderly people as BA could be done within eight years instead of the normal three years. Meanwhile, keeping in view the importance of computers and information technology, IGNOU had come up with another unique course — CIC. It was a six-month course and when it was completed, it was equivalent to BBA. This would mean a degree holder with CIC could take the entrance examination for the MCA course. Apart from this, the university had come up with over 30 job-oriented certificate and diploma courses which could be completed by students while pursuing graduate and postgraduate-level studies. About the validity and importance of the course, Dr Sharma claimed that all courses were recognised by the UGC and other statutory bodies of the Central Government. The admission to almost all courses was currently open, he said. |
Shoddy road repair by contractors Gurgaon, January 11 This is being attributed to shoddy work done by private contractors in collusion with some officials. Residents feel such “irresponsible behaviour has burdened the public exchequer and brought a bad name to the INLD government. It appears the Chief Minister’s office is either being kept in the dark or vested interests have started squandering public money. They are allegedly making the most of the chief minister’s enthusiasm to improve the infrastructure of the city, specially roads. While carpeting on some of the roads was completed only a week ago, repair was completed on a large number of them about a month ago. A survey by this correspondent in Ram Nagar, Shivpuri, Subas Nagar, Arjun Nagar and New Colony revealed this truth. The Sadar Bazaar area is just a stone throw distance from offices and residences of the district, range and divisional officials, including that of the Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, Inspector General of Police, SP and the District and Sessions Judge. Bitumen carpeting done on a road near the Ram Lila ground in Bhim Nagar has started coming off. “Roris” are visible on the road. The same is the situation of the main road in Shivpuri. Scattered concrete articles have become a nightmare for scooterists. A resident of Ram Nagar said the latest repair was done close on the heel of another repair work. Investigation has revealed that inadequate and substandard materials were used. In Bitumen carpeting, bitumen and stone dust is used to interlock the concrete. It is learnt that while in some cases not enough bitumen and stone dust were used, in some other instead of using 40 mm concrete, only 20mm concrete was used. |

Engineer-in-Chief suspended Chandigarh, January 11 Officially, no reason has been given for the action against the senior-most officer of the Irrigation Department of the state. However, informed sources say the suspension seems to be the result of inter-departmental rivalry among engineers. Mr Ailawadi was the head of the Irrigation Department till last month. Before he went abroad on a private visit, the government sent him to the CADA on deputation. Mr J.S. Ahlawat was promoted Engineer-in-Chief of the Irrigation Department. The sources say the government has taken action against Mr Ailawadi for certain alleged acts of commission and omission when he was the Superintending Engineer of the Hathni Kund barrage. It is learnt that when Mr Bansi Lal was the Chief Minister, a complaint was made to him alleging that Mr Ailawadi was responsible for the alleged faulty design of the barrage.
