Kiwis shock Aussies
Melbourne, January 11 New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming said he rated the win highly against a side who were unbeaten in the 2000-01 triangular series in Australia against West Indies and Zimbabwe. Australia were scoring at seven runs an over at 63 for two and cruised to 98 for two in the 19th over before losing Ricky Ponting (45) and Michael Vevan (27) to the bowling of Bond (3-53) within the space of six runs. Australia captain Steve Waugh was run out for 15 at 135 for five after a mix-up with Damien Martyn (24) before Chris Cairns (3-42) bowled Ian Harvey (5) and Brett Lee (0). Martyn’s departure, out lbw after trying to sweep spinner Daniel Vettori, left Australia 168 for nine in the 40th over with plenty of overs in hand but just one wicket, which fell two overs and eight runs later. Allrounder Chris Harris (63 not out) and Vettori (30) produced a record eighth-wicket partnership for New Zealand in limited overs internationals against any country, adding 72 from 103 balls. India Seniors triumph Bangalore, January 11 Sehwag hit a masterly 125 off only 93 balls and was involved in a 191-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Badani, who scored 77, as India Seniors overtook the 288 of India ‘B’ in just 39.5 overs. Coming together when their side was precariously placed at 37 for three, Sehwag and Badani, who had performed well in the first match against India ‘A’ also, plundered runs at will to put their team on the victory path. Their effort negated the commendable knock of Dinesh Mongia who earlier in the day had hit a magnificent 131 to enable a handsome total for India ‘B’. With this win, India Seniors, who had lost to India ‘A’ by two wickets in the first match of the tournament yesterday, kept their chances of qualifying for the final. The finalists would be decided only after tomorrow’s clash between India ‘A’ and India ‘B’ which is a do-or-die battle for the latter. Earlier, Punjab middle order batsman Dinesh Mongia today staked his claim for a return to the national squad as he hammered a brilliant century, enabling India ‘B’ to score an imposing 288 for seven in their allotted overs. Mongia, who came as an opener today, blasted 131 runs off just 118 balls with 10 fours and a six, and flourished the most in the company of Mohammad Kaif, another cricketer waiting to make a comeback into the national side. The two added 136 runs for the second wicket after losing opener Sridharan Sriram (5) when the score was just 12. Kaif made a solid 61 with the help of five fours and a six before giving a simple catch to Sanjay Bangar off Saurav Ganguly, who proved quite expensive today. ICC, BCCI set on a collision course
Kolkata, January 11 BCCI, however, reserved comment on the announcement of the panel by the London headquartered ICC last night saying it would wait for a formal intimation before reacting. “We are yet to receive any formal intimation from ICC about the formation of the panel. Only after receiving it we will give our reaction,” BCCI President Jagmohan Dalmiya told PTI here today. ICC announced last night the three-member panel comprising Justice A.L. Sachs of South Africa as its Chairman and two eminent former cricketers, Majid Khan of Pakistan and Andrew Hilditch of Australia. It said two of the nominees of BCCI chief Jagmohan Dalmiya were “unable to join the panel” owing to personal and business reasons. The Indian board had proposed the names of former Australian skipper Richie Benaud and former Pakistani captain Imran Khan for the panel. Dalmiya had said only a couple of days ago that there was some, “difference of opinion” between ICC and the BCCI over the proposed names for the panel.

Kaneria wrecks B’desh Dhaka, January 11 The leg-spinner tormented the batsmen with tight bowling as Bangladesh were shot out for 152 soon after tea on the third day, crashing to their ninth defeat in 10 Tests so far. Bangladesh were 330 runs behind in the first innings after Pakistan, 436 for 6 overnight, declared at 490 for 9 before lunch. Kaneria, a 21-year-old from Karachi, took 12 wickets in the Asian Test Championship match against Bangladesh at Multan last year, during which he registered his previous best of 6 for 42. Bowling a fine length around off-stump, Kaneria had Habibul Bashar and captain Khaled Masud caught at cover in trying to drive. Mehrab Hossain was caught by Inzamam-ul-Haq at slip, while Sanwar Hossain was snapped up at a silly point by Shadab Kabir. Kaneria completed his third five-wicket haul in four Tests when he bowled Enamul Haque with a fuller length delivery. The wickets of Mohammad Sharif and Fahim Muntasir completed his haul. Murali set to break 400 wkt mark
Colombo, January 11 Muralitharan, who has taken 21 wickets in the two Tests against Zimbabwe for 203 runs at an average of 9.66, will begin the Galle Test with 395 wickets from 71 matches. While he dislocated a finger attempting to take a diving catch in the second Test at Kandy, Sri Lanka coach Dav Whatmore said there was no doubt he would play. “Murali would even bowl on one leg to play in a Test. You can’t keep him out of the action for long,” he said. Only six bowlers in the 125-year history of Test cricket have achieved 400 wickets with New Zealand fast bowler Richard Hadlee the first, and quickest, to the mark in 1990. Hadlee was playing his 80th Test. Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne was the last and the youngest, capturing his 400th against England at The Oval in August 2001, at 31 and in his 92nd Test. Currently, he is the only spinner to achieve this feat. The rest of the 400-club are all quicks — Kapil Dev, Courtney Walsh, Wasim Akram and Curtly Ambrose.

Sampras, Agassi in title clash
Melbourne, January 11 Sampras set up his 33rd career meeting with Agassi with a 6-2 7-6 (7/5) win over Australian Scott Draper in a semi-final today after Agassi beat Sweden’s Thomas Enqvist in three sets yesterday. It will be the first meeting between the two titans since their epic quarter-final at last September’s US Open where Sampras triumphed in four tiebreak sets. Sampras leads Agassi 18-14. “It’s the toughest test I can find before the Australia Open,” said Sampras. “He’s in pretty good form, he loves playing in these conditions, and it’s good to see where I’m at. You have to be at the top of your game to beat Andre”. Elsewhere, Spain’s Alex Corretja had a confidence-boosting 6-7 (2/7) 6-4 6-4 win over German Tommy Haas. Haas continued his indifferent form here, losing his third straight match, following on from defeats to Enqvist and young Californian Tayl or Dent. Dent finished off the exhibition tournament with an encouraging 6-4 7-6 (7/4) win over Russian Yevgeny Kafelnikov.

Dhindsa
re-elected chief of POA
Chandigarh, January 11 Authorised by the general house, Mr Dhindsa infused some fresh blood by picking Raja K.S. Sidhu of the Punjab Rifle Shooting Association , as the new Secretary-General, besides inducting a couple of new faces in the 21-member team of the apex sports body of the State. Though the constitution of the association is still to be amended, Mr Dhindsa announced more offices of vice-presidents, joint secretaries, Executive Committee members besides creating a new key post of additional secretary-general. The amendments, he said, were necessary as the strength of the general house was increasing with induction of more state sports associations as well as district Olympic associations. A special general house meeting would be convened soon to formalise the constitutional amendments, he added. After dismissal of the suit filed by Mr Arvind Khanna by a Patiala court, the passage for today’s meeting was clear which was well attended. Almost all the SSAs and DOAs were represented at the meeting. Cutting across political lines, Mr Dhindsa not only announced that Mr Umrao Singh, President, Punjab Amateur Athletic Association, would be the life President of the POA but also inducted his wife, Mrs Surinder Umaro Singh, President, Punjab Women’s Hockey Association, as a member of the executive committee. The most notable omission from the list released was that of Mr Teja Singh Dhaliwal, Secretary, Punjab Basketball Association, and who played a pivotal role in the successful conduct of events at Ludhiana during the last National Games. Also missing from the list of office-bearers are nominees of men’s hockey and handball, two key sports, in which Punjab had been doing extremely well. The Finance Committee and other committees would be announced later. A welcome change was recognition to international stalwarts as Mr Dhindsa nominated former internationals — wrestler Kartar Singh and footballer Inder Singh —- on the executive committee. When the general house assembled, an agent of Mr Arvind Khanna circulated a copy of the letter purportedly written by Mr Arvind Khanna to all members cautioning them against attending an “illegal meeting”. “As per the constitutional provisions of the POA, the audited statement of accounts of the past years and budget for the next year should have been circulated along with the notice and agenda for the meeting, which had been done only later, which also contravenes the provisions of the constitution. “The proceedings of the meeting may be treated as null and void and will have no bearing on the present status of the incumbents holding various offices in the POA,” the later said. The house resolved to “ignore” the letter in view of the court orders passed yesterday. Mr K.S. Sahota of the Chandigarh Olympic Association was the special observer of the Indian Olympic Association. |
Parminder feels shattered Chandigarh, January 11 Hidden behind his everlasting smile is grief which only he can understand. "She always encouraged me," he said today as members of his family got busy in preparations for the bhog
ceremony. Be it the 1982 Asian Games, Merdeka Cup, Durand Cup, DCM
Trophy, or the national championship for the Santosh Trophy, Parminder's exploits are very much part of India's football history with his mother being the beacon of inspiration. What indeed makes Parminder stand out from the rest is his
humility, a quality which he imbibed from his mother, Mrs Ajmer
Kaur. Besides being an outstanding footballer, Parminder is one of the few players who never earned the red card throughout his playing career. "She would always rejoice when I brought home trophies and was particularly happy the day the former Prime Minister, Mr PV Narasimha
Rao, awarded me the 'footballer of the decade' trophy at Jamshedpur in 1993. During childhood, she took special care of our diet and always wanted to see me and my brother,
Surinder, strong. When my brother informed me about her death, I felt as if some vital link had snapped," said the veteran
footballer, a native of Boor Majra village near
Kurali, and at present the assistant coach of Punjab's premier outfit JCT Phagwara who are currently busy in the National Football
League. The bhog ceremony will be held at the sector 22 gurdwara here at 1 p.m. on January 12. |
Vasco pip East Bengal; Mahindras lose
Kolkata, January 11 Reigning champions East Bengal never looked to threaten the Vasco defence barring a few sporadic forays by the Nigerian pair of Isiaka and Musah. With today’s results, East Bengal remained on 10 points from seven matches, while Vasco moved up to 12 points from the same number of games. With this loss, East Bengal also missed the opportunity of moving to the top of the NFL ladder for the first time. The goal came in the 10th minute of the match when latching on to a through pass from the midfield Vasco’s striker Peter Rodrigues stepped up the accelerator and tapped the ball home past an advancing Hemanta Dora, virtually unchallenged. The red-yellow deep defence looked lead-footed and hardly challenged the advancing striker. With 80 minutes of play left, East Bengal despite keeping up the pressure, could not convert a single goal scoring opportunity largely due to unimaginative gameplan and poor shooting. To add to East Bengal’s woes, Vijayan and Bijen continued to display indifferent form while the midfield looked totally out of sorts. Ancheri’s absence and lack of a gamemaker hurt East Bengal coach Manoranjan most. The strikers also showed lack of form, which will surely fuel the urgency to rope in the Brazilian striker whom they are trying to contact as fast as possible. However, it was East Bengal who created three gilt-edged opportunities in the second half. Isiaka and Musah each tried their luck once, but Vasco’s Brazilian goalie Ramos foiled the attempts on both the occasions. Tushar Rakshit also missed a sitter from very close. For Vasco, Colaco, Sanjay Paino and Rui had a brilliant outing, thus creating a golden triangle among themselves and making most of the attacks giving the East Bengal defence a trying time. Mahindras beaten MARGAO: Two stunning drives in each half by medios Noel Wilson and Roque Barretto ended Mahindras’ unbeaten dream run and enabled Goa league champions Zee Churchill to carve out a 2-1 victory in a National Football League match here today. Zee Churchill, who held territorial advantage and better scoring chances in the first half, drew first blood in the 4th minute when a 40-yard long ranger left keeper Virender Singh surprised as the ball struck the left upright before finding the net. They increased the lead in the 61st minute when Roque Barretto after getting the ball in the middle from Yakub, dribbled past two defenders and essayed a rasping left footer that beat Virender to his right to find the far post. Zee Churchill could have won by a bigger margin had their strikers utilised the close chances that came their way in both the sessions. Mahindras, who failed to find their bearings in the first half, came back strongly in the second half and reduced the margin through a penalty taken by Khalid Jamil after substitute Raman Vijayan was bought down by defender Osumanu Husseini inside the box. Mahindras went all out in the closing stages in search of the equaliser but the rival defence led by Osumanu and Mahesh Gowali gave nothing away. Zee Churchill now join Salgaocar, Mahindras and Vasco who have 12 points from seven matches. They are placed second after Salgaocar on account of better goal difference and are followed by Mahindras and Vasco.
