BJP firm on Yamunanagar seat Gurgaon, January 8 The BJP’s state parliamentary board meeting has been convened tomorrow to discuss the names of the aspirants for ticket. The three-member committee, comprising office-bearers from Haryana, to assess the ground reality in Yamunanagar and chances of winnability of the aspirants, has already submitted its report to the state president of the party, Mr Rattan Lal Kataria. According to sources, the committee has shortlisted 10
names, including that of a former minister and BJP stalwart, Ms Kamla Verma. The name of a former president of the Haryana unit of the BJP, Prof Ram Bilas Sharma, does not figure on the list A local leader from Yamunanagar, Mr Ghan Shyam Dass, is also in the reckoning. Although INLD and BJP leaders have reduced the frequency of spat against each other in public, a majority of the BJP leaders are said to be apprehensive of Mr Chautala’s moves in Yamunanagar, especially in light of the last Assembly elections in Haryana. It may be recalled that immediately after the elections, almost all top leaders of the BJP alleged that Mr Chautala had worked against them, resulting in setback to the party. At some places the INLD allegedly encouraged its leaders to enter the fray as Independents in direct contest to the BJP nominees. The chill in the relationship has not improved as witnessed by continuing sporadic outbursts of the BJP leaders against the policies of the INLD government. Significantly, during the call given by the Haryana Congress for “Bandh” in urban pockets of the state on November 2, the BJP did not oppose it. A senior BJP leader said his party attached significance to the elections in Yamunanagar as it was considered to be its stronghold. The BJP has won the seat three times and stood second on other occasions. Hence, the BJP could give up its claim on the constituency, he added. |
Yamunanagar: Sonia to select nominee Chandigarh, January 8 This decision was taken unanimously by the Election Committee of the party, which met here under the presidentship of Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda. Among those who attended the meeting were the Leader and the Deputy Leader of the Congress Legislature Party, Mr Bhajan Lal and Capt Ajay Singh Yadav, respectively, Mr Shamsher Singh Surjewala and Mr Harpal Singh, both former presidents of the Haryana Congress; Mr Mange Ram Gupta, MLA; Mr Chiranji Lal Sharma, Mr Khurshid Ahmed and Mr Hari Singh Nalwa, all former MPs; Mr Jagdish Nehra, Mrs Prasanni Devi and Mr Phool Chand Mullana, all former Ministers; and Mr Jai Singh Rana, former MLA. Waking up from a slumber, the party also decided to organise a dharna in Panipat on January 18 to protest against the murder of a teacher, Mrs Joginder Kaur, in which the involvement of certain relatives of the Haryana Assembly Speaker is alleged. Mrs Joginder Kaur was murdered inside the court complex on November 26 last. Though the Youth Congress had organised a demonstration in Panipat, it is for the first time that the parent body will hold any kind of protest. Mr Hooda said a party delegation would also give a memorandum to the President, the Prime Minister, the Union Home Minister and the Haryana Governor demanding a CBI inquiry into the case. |
BSP fields Punjabi to
shed ‘Dalit image’ Panipat, January 8 The name of Mr Ahuja, who will file his nomination papers on January 21, was cleared by the high command last night. The nomination of Mr Ahuja is part of the new strategy of the party to grow and expand its base among the other castes and communities to widen its electoral base, sources told The Tribune here today. Under the new strategy party was planning to give representation to the leaders of those communities which have a major presence in the area so that it stood to gain electorally. This becomes clear by the decision to give ticket to Mr Ahuja, as the Punjabi community, to which Ahuja belongs, has a strong presence of over 35,000 votes in the Assembly constituency. The Dalits, too, have over 35,000 votes followed to Brahmins (25,000 votes) and Muslims (15,000 votes). However, the nomination of Mr Ahuja is likely to be mired in controversy as he had hit the headlines when he was booked under Sections 452, 420, 419, 384, 170, 506, 120-B, 223 and 242 of the IPC on September 17 last year on charges of harassment and extortion from a boy and a girl staying in his hostel here. The case had generated much heat here and the FIR was lodged on the directions of the Haryana DGP, Mr M.S. Malik, after the local police tried to allegedly hush up the case. The SI Mr Narinder Dahiya, and Havaldar Ranbir were suspended in the case. Mr Ahuja was later released on bail. Talking about the main election issue, Mr Ahuja said failure of the Om Prakash Chautala government on all fronts would be his main plank. Mr Ahuja is a former general secretary of the Haryana Pradesh Youth Congress before he joined the BSP in November last year and was appointed state spokesman of the BSP. |
