18 units backing Muthiah New Delhi, September 26 “Of the 31 votes, we are confident of securing two-thirds majority even in the event of a contest for the post of president,” they said. According to them, the 18-member core group discussed the long-term future of the board administration even deciding on subsequent presidents. “In fact, it has also been decided as to who will succeed Muthiah in 2002 and the person will be of high status in public life like Arun Jaitley, Sharad Pawar or Narhari Amin,” they said. “A decision has been taken to nominate a past president on the board in an advisory capacity so as to achieve the goal set by Muthiah for the development of game from the grassroot levels keeping in mind the 2003 World Cup”. Muthiah confirmed the meeting held here yesterday and expressed his gratitude to the units lending him support. “I am overwhelmed by the support extended to me. Handful of members in the board are still against some of the decisions taken by me during the last financial year but the performance of the board will speak for the transparency maintained,” Muthiah said. “As I had said earlier, some more plans require to be implemented and therefore, I have decided to seek a third term in office,” he said. On whether any compromise between the two rival groups (incumbent Muthiah’s and challenger Jagmohan Dalmiya’s) was discussed at the meeting, the current board chief said: “The core group seems to be confident of a two-thirds majority. At this juncture, I do not want to comment on any compromise formula but keeping the interest of the game the core group will decide on this too.” One of the two former presidents said there was nothing wrong in Muthiah making available the board accounts and related papers to the income tax department in order to secure exemption from the government. The meeting was attended by representatives from five of the six units in North Zone, five from West, two from East, four from Central and two from South. “Many more members from different zones have been expressing their support having come to know of the meeting here yesterday. But the meeting had in strong terms decided that none from the rival group should be given any position in the board and there is no question of any compromise in this regard,” the former president claimed. Explaining the reasons for their support, the two former presidents said ever since Muthiah took over from Raj Singh Dungarpur, the board’s working had been transparent and Muthiah had taken some hard decisions in respect of ‘match-fixing’ and formation of the National Cricket Academy besides others. According to them, the meeting was attended by the following: West Zone: Sharad Pawar (Mumbai), Raj Singh Dungarpur (CCI), D.C. Agasse (Maharashtra), Niranjan Shah (Saurashtra) and Chirayu Amin (Baroda). North Zone: Prabhu Chawla (Punjab), T. Choudhury (Haryana), Col Sharma (Services), K.B. Powar (Universities) Anurag Thakur (HP). Central Zone: Shashank Manohar (Vidharbha), Rajiv Shukla (UP), Bal Keseri (Railways), Ashok Kumat (MP). East Zone: Bes Baruva (Assam), A.N. Sharma (Bihar). South Zone: N. Srinivasan (TNCA), A.C. Muthiah (BCCI President).

South Africans fear
Harbhajan most Johannesburg, September 26 The man who destroyed Australia, with a record 32 wickets in a three-Test series at home earlier this year earning the title of ‘turbonator’, is the most feared man in the Indian team as South Africa prepare to take him on in a triangular one-day series, also involving Kenya, and a three-Test series. “We’ve heard of the terminator in films but the Indian side has the ‘turbonator’ and that’s Harbhajan Singh,” said one broadcast journalist as the Indian team went in for its first training session of the 66-day tour at the Wanderers here yesterday. The Indian team were put through their paces in two sessions with skipper Saurav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar concentrating on running between the wickets while Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble sharpened up their spin bowling.

Overturn life ban, pleads Cronje Pretoria, September 26 Cronje, whose admission that he accepted money from a bookmaker sparked South Africa’s worst sporting scandal, was banned from cricket for life last year by the country’s United Cricket Board. Two other players, Herschelle Gibbs and Henry Williams, were banned from cricket for six months after admitting they agreed to underperform — but later reneged on the agreement — in return for money at Cronje’s request. Both were granted a hearing before the bans were imposed, Malcom Wallace, a lawyer from Cronje, told the Pretoria High Court. Wallace questioned why the decision to ban Cronje was made before any hearings had been held. Cronje did not dispute that his conduct was wrong, Wallace said, but he wanted a fair hearing on the matter. Cronje sparked a massive match-fixing scandal last year after Indian officials said they had tape recordings of him talking with an Indian bookmaker during the team’s tour to the subcontinent. Several teammates later told a government commission that Cronje conveyed to them an offer in 1996 of up to $ 350,000 to lose a one-day game against India. Cronje denied that, but admitted receiving $ 100,000 from gamblers in exchange for match information. The United Cricket Board decided in October to ban Cronje from international cricket for life for his part in the scandal. Wallace said Cronje did not intend to resume his former career as an international player, but hoped to find a way to make some sort of living from cricket. Cronje’s lawyers had previously said he wanted to act as a television commentator and coach. The ban prevents him from coaching at a provincial level. The South African Broadcast Corp. Last night reported that Cronje’s lawyers were trying to reach a last-minute compromise with the cricket board before the hearing. However, a deal did not appear to have been reached and the hearing began today as scheduled. AP |
‘Lara is past his best’ Kingston (Jamaica), September 26 Weekes believes the career of the 32-year-old Trinidadian left-hander, who holds the record for the highest individual scores in Test and first-class cricket, has been severely affected by injuries. “We have now seen the best of Lara, and it’s unfortunate to say that,” Weekes said on local radio via telephone from his home in Barbados on Monday. “He depends heavily on footwork, but his movement has been hindered by injuries,’’ the 76-year-old added. “At age 31 or 32 you are a better player, but you will not get the number of runs you got when you were 24. “Lara is a great batsman, but so many things have gone amiss during his career.” In 1994, Lara broke the two most prestigious individual batting records in the sport, scoring 375 in a Test match against England and 501 for Warwickshire in a county championship game against
Durham. Weekes, who retired in 1958 having scored 4,455 runs in 48 Tests at an average of 58.61, holds the world record for scoring five successive Test hundreds against India in 1948. He was one of the three ‘’W’s’’, along with Frank Worrell and Clyde Walcott, who dominated the West Indies cricket in the 1950s.

CRPF edge out N Rly, move into quarterfinal Chandigarh, September 26 CRPF, playing their first match in the current
edition, were clearly the superior side as Northern Railway were virtually at the receiving end throughout the stipulated period. The railway outfit were a pale shadow of the past and missed stalwarts like Olympian Balwinder
Singh, who powered them to many a memorable win in the nineties. Despite enjoying territorial supremacy, CRPF had to wait till the 30th minute for the all-important
goal. A combined move by Berla Ekka, V.Hemram, Boron Oron and Mukesh Kumar culminated in a fine attempt by Tanveer
Jamal, whose rasping hit from the top of the ‘D’ was bang on target (1-0). The second half saw CRPF coming back strongly as they forced three penalty corners in quick succession which,
however, proved abortive. The security men maintained the pressure on the rivals and on one occasion Tanveer Jamal came close to scoring when he managed to cut through a host of defenders but Rakesh of Northern Railway dispossessed him in the nick of time. Two minutes from close, CRPF earned another penalty corner which, however, went waste and the security men had to remain content with the one-goal victory. Another railway
outfit, Western Railway, Mumbai, were luckier as Indian Air Force proved easy prey for
them. Shanta Kumar put his side ahead through a brilliant field goal in the 17th minute. Six minutes from the lemon
break, Gursev Singh buttressed the lead by converting a penalty corner, the
only one earned by Western Railway. In the second half, Mukhtiar Singh came up with a gem of an effort and sounded the boards with a deft placement in the 49th minute leaving the Air Force custodian stunned (3-0). The IAF team earned as many as three penalty corners which were wasted. The last match between Shivalik Academy and Punjab and Sind Bank Academy was a battle involving young blood. With hardly any worthwhile move originating from either end, frustration was a natural outcome which led to frayed tempers occasionally. In the 28th
minute, a wordy duel almost led to an exchange of blows but timely intervention by umpire Varinder
Bahadur, who flashed the yellow card and gave marching orders to rival captains Rajinder Singh and Sarabjit Singh besides Jaswinder and
Kishan, kept the situation under control. The two teams did get some scoring
chances. A stinging hit by Shivalik Academy’s Pushpinder Singh narrowly missed the target in the first half which was followed by a deflection by
Balwinder, but Gaganpreet of PSB Academy made a goal-line save. PSB Academy earned at least four penalty corners in the second half but failed to score. In the tie breaker that followed, PSB Academy emerged triumphant thanks to successful conversions by Gaganpreet Singh, Sarabjit Singh, Rajinder Kumar, and Ranjit
Singh. For Shivalik Academy, only Pushpinder Singh and skipper Rajinder Singh successfully converted their strokes. Thursday’s fixtures: RCF v Western Railway — 1 p.m.; Central Railway v PSB Academy — 2.30 p.m.; Signals v UP XI — 4 p.m. |

Young athletes take banned drugs New Delhi, September 26 The talk about some Indian sportspersons taking banned drugs to enhance their performances has been confirmed by the Sports Ministry. “To the surprise of the Sports Ministry, many young athletes take prohibitive substances to do well in various competitions on the advice of misguided medical practitioners,” a top ministry official said today. In the wake of reports regarding banned drugs being found in the rooms in National Institute of Sports, Patiala, the Ministry had ordered an inquiry under Maj O.P. Bhatia, ED (teams) in Sports Authority of India (SAI). Media reports had said that in the rooms of several athletes empty bottles of vitamins, nutrients and few bottles of anabolic steroids along with injections were found. After completing the inquiry, Bhatia in his report suggested that the disciplines “mainly athletics, weightlifting and body-building are getting affected” by the use of banned substances. “There is an urgent need to prohibit drug abuse in sports,” the report said. In the three disciplines mentioned, the performance of athletes in domestic circuits has been quite good. But in competitions outside the country, they rarely touch the levels achieved at home, the report said indicating the use of drugs to enhance performance. Treating the report as “very important”, Sports Minister Uma Bharti, who expressed surprise over the findings, has called a meeting of Indian Olympic Association and all sports federations to discuss the report and suggest remedies.

Deportivo’s late onslaught stuns United Paris, September 26 Paul Scholes’ right-foot blast five minutes before the break briefly brought a hushed atmosphere to the Riazor Stadium after a neat move involving Ryan Giggs and Ruud van Nistelrooy. Manchester United were less than five minutes away from breaking a 44-year hoodoo regarding winning a tie in Spain but then their discipline deserted them in the teeth of never-say-die Deportivo’s late onslaught. Substitute Walter Pandiani smacked home the equaliser in the 86th minute and Nourredine Naybet blasted the 90th-minute winner. It was a classic case of deja-vu for Manchester United, as David Beckham had brought the three points with his last-gasp effort at Old Trafford against battling Lille last week. Deportivo, held 2-2 at home by Olympiakos last week, now head group G on four points with Lille’s 3-1 win over the Greeks in France putting them ahead of Manchester United on goal difference. Manchester United coach Alex Ferguson, who had said beforehand he
expected the Spanish inquisition would prove Manchester United’s toughest match in the group, was left dumbfounded by the late
turnaround. It was a disappointing finish - it’s hard to believe,” said Sir Alex. “You have to do it in all games, when 1-0 up -it only takes a second to score a goal.” Debutants Lille dominated their encounter as they beat Olympiakos 3-1 at Lens to score their first win in the competition with goals from Dagui Orphie Bakari, Bruno Cheyrou and Gregory Tafforeau. Stylianos Giannakopoulos pulled a goal back for Olympiakos in the dying seconds but Lille showed passion and no mean amount of big match temperament as Vahid Halilhodzic’s team showed they can pose a threat. As Manchester United licked their wounds there was much better news for Scottish champions Celtic, who won their first match in group E, courtesy Swedish striker Henrik Larsson’s ninth goal of the season in the 36th minute to see off Portuguese side and 1987 European champions FC Porto at Parkhead. Larsson missed a corner swung over by Bobby Petta. But the ball bounced off his English strike partner Chris Sutton and the Swede pounced on his second bite at the cherry. The result erased much of the disappointment the Glaswgians felt following their unfortunate 2-3 loss through a disputed penalty at Juventus last week. Now Celtic can look forward to next month’s return match in Portugal with renewed confidence - although they thanked goalkeeper Rob Douglas for several fine stops in the second period. Juventus dropped two points in a 1-1 draw at Norway’s Rosenborg as they themselves, for once, were the victims of a penalty furore. The Italians dominated the match, hitting the woodwork three times before Alessandro Del Piero finally scored what looked like a winner after 84 minutes. But within four minutes the side from Trondheim squared the match when Bent Skammelsrud converted a penalty after goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon had committed a foul. Juventus
still lead the table with four points, Celtic and Porto both have three and Rosenborg just one. Reigning continental kings Bayern Munich, slammed for last week’s goal-less home draw with Sparta Prague, redeemed themselves with a fine 3-1 win at Spartak Moscow in group H. Bayern silenced the 52,000 crowd at the Luzhniki stadium with a composed performance despite the wet
conditions as Brazilian forward Giovance Elber and Bosnian international Hasan Salihamidzic wreaked havoc with the Russian defence.

Tollygunge rout Sporting 4-0 Kolkata, September 26 Tollygunge, after a 1-4 drubbing in their first match at the hands of giant East Bengal, put up a vastly improved display and struck twice in each half through Nigerian strikers Adiola and Moses (2) and medio Sasthi Duley. East Bengal and Tollygunge are now jointly leading the three team league table with as many points from one and two matches, respectively. Mohammedan Sporting area at the bottom, failing to collect any point after their first match today. They are now almost out of the tournament as to qualify for the last eight stage they have to beat East Bengal by a margin of at least four goals. Moving like a well oiled machine, Tollygunge dominated the proceedings all through. They could even have won with a bigger margin, but for their frontliners, who muffed away quite a few easy chances-forward Akeem being the worst offender. Needing a victory to remain in the contention, Tollygunge went all out right from the kick off and forged ahead in the 10th minute when Adiola, who went overlapping, collected a right flank pass from his compatriot and shot home (1-0). Inspired with an early goal, Tollygunge kept up their pressure and buttressed their lead in the 31st minute through striker Moses whose powerful drive off a nice through from Akeem beat rival keeper Imran Khan (2-0). Md Sporting, which were now shadow of their past, could just make a couple goal bound moves in the second half, both of which proved abortive. While a powerful shot by their defender Lawrence went out narrowly, Tollygunge custodian Gopal Das smartly held a block buster off Mohammedan forward Amzand Khan. Tollygunge sprang into action again towards the end resulting in two more goals. While Tolly’s medio Sasthi Duley made it 3-0 grabbing on a back pass by a rival defender to Irfan Khan (3-0). Moses completed the tally with a 25 yarder right footer which dipped in outwitting Khan (4-0).

Honda-Siel to be Indian Tour event New Delhi, September 26 Earlier, the inaugural Afro-Asian Games, scheduled to be held in India in November, were postponed to 2002, while Pakistan has cancelled the South Asian Federation Games, and the International Hockey Federation has shifted the Champions Trophy hockey tournament from Pakistan. Chairman and managing director of Siel Ltd Siddharth Shriram announced here today that “it really doesn’t make sense to have an Asian PGA Davidoff Tour event without many of the foreign players”. But Mr Shriram assured that the tournament on the domestic circuit would be held as per schedule. “We are committed to the growth of Indian golf and hence we are going ahead with the tournament on the scheduled dates (from November 1 to 4) at the Delhi Golf Club. It will be a part of the PGA Indian Tour, and will remain the biggest tournament on the Tour. But the upgradation to Davidoff Tour will have to wait for another time,” Mr Shriram explained. The Honda-Siel PGA Championship, which used to be the biggest prize money event on the Hero Honda Indian Golf Tour, was upgraded as a specially approved event on the Asian PGA Tour, with a prize money of $ 200,000. Mr Brandon de Souza, president of the Tiger Sports Marketing, event managers of the Honda-Siel PGA event, said: “We were eagerly looking forward to the tournament and were preparing the course and other facilities towards it. But we understand the viewpoint of Mr Shriram as a good field is a pre-requisite for any successful tournament.” Captain of the Delhi Golf Club Rajesh Dhingra said whatever may be the status of the Honda-Siel event “the Delhi Golf Club course will be of world standard for the tournament”.
The tournament last season had a prize money of Rs 30 lakh. Jyoti Randhawa had won the title. Meanwhile, the Sher-e-Kashmir Open Tournament will be held at the Royal Springs Golf Club, Srinagar, next month. This event of the PGA Indian Tour will mark the official launch of the Royal Springs Golf Club course. |
Rivaldo is fit: CBF Rio De Janeiro, September 26 Rivaldo is expected to fly back to Barcelona after a spell having treatment in his homeland and the Catalan giants will expect him back in action for them before he dons international colours again. The striker has been working closely with Brazilian team doctor Jose Luiz Runco, who said Rivaldo was no longer feeling the ligament strain in his knee which he injured in the September 5 defeat by Argentina. Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari is keeping his finger crossed that Rivaldo makes the Chile date as the four-times world champions’ chances of making next summer’s finals in South Korea and Japan still hang in the balance. Chile won the home match between the two sides 3-0. Brazil have also called up fit again Inter Milan star Ronaldo for the match in Curitiba after his own recovery from serious knee problems which have blighted his career over the past two years. Barcelona coach Carles Rexach had originally not been counting on Rivaldo for the October 3 Spanish league match against Real Mallorca but insists that the club have an agreement with the Brazilians that he should appear for his club before his country when he returns to action.
