Nehra’s fate to be decided today Mumbai, September 21 Nehra, who was declared unfit by sports medicine expert Dr Anant Joshi after watching the Delhi youngster bowl at the MRF Pace Foundation in Chennai earlier this week, will get a last chance to prove his claims of being ‘totally fit’. Nehra was the fourth to be declared unfit after middle-order batsman V.V.S.Laxman and his replacement Hemang Badani, and fast bowler Zaheer Khan were ruled out for the triangular one-day series in South Africa. All three are nursing injuries and were not expected to recover before the team leaves on the 66-day tour on Monday. While opener Jacob Martin has been included in the squad in place of Laxman and Badani, his Baroda team-mate Harvinder Singh has been named replacement for Zaheer Jhan who also belongs to Baroda. Though Nehra has still not been ruled out, the cricket board has summoned Debasish Mohanty, Ajit Agarkar and Rakesh Patel to also undergo the tests. The city has been experiencing unseasonal showers for the last three days, but BCCI executive secretary Sharad Diwadkar was confident the fitness tests would be conducted as scheduled. “The strip and the run-up (at Wankhede Stadium) have been well covered and I don’t think the rains will affect smooth conduct of the fitness tests,” Diwadkar said. Team physio Andrew Leipus, who along with Dr Joshi will conduct the tests, inspected the pitch and expressed his satisfaction with the ground conditions. He, however, refused to say what kind of tests would be conducted tomorrow. “I will tell you about it all tomorrow after the fitness tests,” Leipus added. The cricketers are expected to assemble here tomorrow morning as the tests would be held only in the evening. Selection Committee Chairman Chandu Borde and BCCI Secretary Jaywant Lele are expected to be present during the tests.

Sanchez, Dokic enter
semis
Tokyo, September 21 A punishing schedule of four matches in three days looked to have caught up with the 29-year-old Spaniard as Testud dominated the second set before opening a 3-1 lead in the decider at Tokyo’s Ariake Colosseum. But the fifth-seeded Sanchez-Vicario found extra reserves of energy to reel off five straight games before Testud rallied to force a tie-break in a high-quality match watched by a crowd of 6,719. “I have Spanish blood so I’m tough like the bulls,’’ joked Sanchez-Vicario after taking the tie-break 7-5 with some attacking play reminiscent of the form that won her the 1994 U.S. Open. Playing on a hard court modelled on the Flushing Meadows surface, Sanchez-Vicario again showed her experience as she repeatedly came up with big shots on crucial points to frustrate Testud. At one stage, the Frenchwoman shook her head in disbelief after Sanchez-Vicario intercepted a driven pass down the line with a lunging volley winner to avert break point at 3-3 and 30-30 in the final set. After the point, Sanchez-Vicario, a big crowd favourite in Japan, sat in the tram-lines for a full minute milking the applause of the spectators. “I always feel like I’m playing at home here in Japan. It’s a great feeling and it always gives me a lift,’’ she said. What Sanchez-Vicario, who has also won three French Open titles in 16 years on the circuit, may have lost in terms of leg speed she makes up for with her anticipation and clever variations of pace and spin. “Even when I was down 3-1 in the final set, I knew I was doing the right things and just needed to make a few shots,’’ she said. “I was confident I could break back.’’ Sanchez-Vicario, who has slipped to 19th in the world rankings, showed her full range of strokes against Testud, coming up with drop shots, precision lobs and even some serve-volley tactics to keep her opponent guessing. But despite 29 singles and 61 doubles titles and more than $16 million in career prize money, she is showing no sign of losing her hunger for success. Top seed Kim Clijsters and number three Jelena Dokic dropped just four games each as the two 18-year-old players set up an intriguing semifinal clash. Clijsters dominated on her serve, sending down six aces in a 6-3 6-1 victory over seventh seed Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand who had no answer to the power and all-court game of the Belgian.

Sydney, September 21 The newly-crowned US Open champion overcame tenacious Jonas Bjorkman to win in four sets after Thomas Johansson had clawed his way back from two sets down to extinguish Pat Rafter in a topsy-turvy five-setter. World No 3 Hewitt, who almost single-handedly lifted Australia to victory over Brazil in Florianopolis last April, saved his team from the bleak prospect of a 2-0 deficit after the opening exchanges. Hewitt, who beat Pete Sampras for his first Grand Slam major in New York earlier this month, slugged it out with journeyman Bjorkman, ranked 58, before coming through 4-6 6-4 7-6 (7/5) 7-6 (7/2). Sweden rocked favourites Australia from the outset when 18th-ranked Johansson duelled with world No 4 Rafter for three hours 42 minutes before prevailing 3-6 6-7 (8/10) 6-3 6-2 6-3. Johansson broke Rafter’s serve five times in the final three sets, with the two-time US Open champion’s game unravelling and conceding a total of 16 double-faults. The winner of the Sydney tie plays France or The Netherlands in the November 30 to December 2 final. Hewitt, under pressure to win after Rafter’s collapse, found 29-year-old Bjorkman a gritty opponent and it was only after three hours and 37 minutes and under lights that the feisty Australian ended the Swede’s challenge. Hewitt dropped the opening set and was drawn into a tenacious struggle before he got the better of Bjorkman.

Ronaldo boosts Inter Milan London, September 21 The Brazil international, whose last appearance was in the Italian Cup final on April 12, 2000 — when he ruptured knee ligaments which required surgery — came on as a 63rd minute substitute for compatriot Adriano with Inter already 3-0 up. French midfielder Stephane Dalmat opened the scoring for Inter in the 23rd minute, Mohammed Kallon made it two and Luigi Di Biagio got the third four minutes before halftime. After making his long-awaited return Ronaldo had two shots on target as he eased himself into the game. “I was looking to pick up the rhythm as the rhythm of a friendly and a competitive match are very different,’’ he told Italian television. “I am very happy to be back and the goals will come.’’ The match in Trieste was one of 43 originally due to be played last Thursday but postponed for a week following the attacks on the USA. The second legs will be played next Thursday. Inter’s city rivals AC Milan collected a solid 2-0 victory against BATE Borisov in Belarus through Andrei Shevchenko in the 64th minute and Javi Moreno two minutes from time. Parma scraped a 1-0 home win over HJK Helsinki, thanks to a Savo Milosevic penalty but Fiorentina could only manage a goal-less draw in the Ukraine against Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk Italian clubs have dominated the competition in the last 15 years but no Spanish club has won it since Real Madrid in 1986. However, the country’s representatives started well yesterday. Celta Vigo led the way with a 4-0 home win over Czech side Sigma Olomouc, helped by two goals from Valery Karpin, while Real Zeragoza hit three second half goals for a 3-0 home win over Denmark’s Silkeborg. Jaideep, Rohan in
final Sangrur, September 21 Top seed Jaideep Kohli had no difficulty in disposing off third seed Mohammad Salim in straight games 7-4, 7-3, 7-4. Much was expected from Salim, who played like a novice today. On the other hand Kohli played like a champion from the word go and never allowed Salim to settle down. Kohli dominated the march through out and often caught Salim on the wrong foot with his deceptive drops and smashes. Second seed and former Punjab champion Rohan Kapur faced no resistance from fourth-seeded Harish in the second semifinal, winning 7-3, 1-7, 7-3, 7-2. Harish, who played a gruelling quarterfinal in the morning failed to live upto his reputation. Harish, who is known for his excellent wrist work, could not match Rohan’s speed. Trying to put up a fight he won the second game, but that was as far as he can go.
