Zimbabwe declare at 419 for 9 wkts Bulawayo, September 16 In reply South Africa were 26 without loss at close. Left-arm spinner Claude Henderson took four wickets for 143 in 67 overs, including the dismissals of Guy Whittall and Heath Streak, who had shared a seventh-wicket stand of 47 after three Zimbabwe wickets had fallen between lunch and tea. Whittall and Streak were both dismissed with the score at 377 and then Travis Friend was bowled by fast bowler Shaun Pollock for four to make the score 406 for nine. Paul Strang, however, defied South Africa and was 38 not out at the declaration. Yesterday’s play had been abandoned without a ball bowled due to rain and a wet outfield and Zimbabwe resumed on 154 for two. South Africa took the new ball in the second over of the day and in the seventh over Hamilton Masakadza edged a delivery from fast bowler Andre Nel and was caught by wicketkeeper Mark Boucher for 13. That was the visitors’ sole success of the morning session, which ended with Zimbabwe on 255 for three. In the fourth over after lunch Andy Flower, who had scored 142 and 199 not out in the first Test in Harare, was dismissed for 67 — his 12th score of 50 or more in his last 15 Test innings. A delivery from Henderson bounced steeply and turned sharply to hit the left-hander’s glove before looping to Neil McKenzie at silly point. Flower, who had attacked the bowling and often found the gaps square on both sides of the wicket, was at the crease for just over two hours. He faced 99 balls and hit 10 fours. His dismissal ended a fourth-wicket stand of 86 of which Stuart Carlisle scored just 19.

Sharjah meet as planned Dubai, September 16 “There is absolutely no change in the schedule all the three teams — Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe — have committed to play here and they will stick to the plan,” CBFS Chief Executive Zahid Nooraniwas quoted as saying in Khaleej Times. He said: “We keep talking to the officials of the participating teams on a regular basis but our discussions are mainly confined to administrative matters.” Mr Noorani was reacting to a query whether any of the participating teams had shown reluctance to participate in the tournament, to be staged in October-end, following the incidents in the USA. New Delhi has already postponed the Afro-Asian Games, which were to begin on November 3, in the aftermath of the incidents in New York and Washington on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Mr Noorani said the CBFS would be more than willing to implement the recommendations of the Anti-Corruption Unit of the International Cricket Council (ICC) to combat corruption in the game.

Zidane shines for Real Madrid Madrid, September 16 Real Madrid’s world record transfer signing, after several weeks of publicly-aired questions over how he would fit into the Spanish champions’ playing scheme, and indeed whether the world ‘Player of the Year’ was match fit after his summer move from Juventus, scored his first official goal for his new club. He was also, in many pundit’s view, the best player on the pitch for Real Madrid last night. However, Madrid crashed 1-3 at newly-promoted Real Betis and the eight-time kings of Europe returned to the Spanish capital with their tails between their legs. The pictures in the Spanish newspapers today showed Zidane celebrating his goal, a precise right foot shot from the edge of the area, but only in among a collection of snaps of Real Madrid players with their heads in their hands and looking downcast. “He had a great first half but the result was very negative,” Spanish sports daily Marca commented on its front page, below a picture of Zidane. “He had his characteristic elegant touch but had no support,” another sports paper said. Zidane was voted best of Real Madrid’s disparate and disappointing dozen by media as varied as the television channel TeleMadrid, the national radio stations Onda Cero and Cadena Ser, as well as Marca and As. However, As, despite praising Zidane’s individual efforts, also held him and Real Madrid coach Vicente Del Bosque responsible for the crushing defeat. Del Bosque made five changes to the side which drew a week ago with Malaga.

China beat Uzbekistan 2-0 in Cup qualifier Shenyang, September 16 The win yesterday in front of 60,000 frenetic fans and a nationwide television audience put the unbeaten Chinese side in first place with 10 points, followed by Uzbekistan with six and Qatar with five after the fourth round of Group B matches. “I’m very happy with this 2-0 win, everyone played well and we made a great effort as a team,” said China’s Yugoslav coach Bora Milutinovic following the match. “Since coming to China this has to be my most satisfying win, with 10 points we are now in a good position,” he said. Following a scoreless first half largely dominated by China, Chinese defender Li Weifeng stepped up to knock in a ferocious header off Wu Chengying’s corner kick to break the draw in the 63rd minute. Uzbekistan managed only three attempts on the goal during the whole match as a tight Chinese defence kept Uzbekistan’s star midfielder Vladimir Maminov in check. Following China’s first strike, Uzbekistan’s luck turned further for the worst when defender Sergey Lushan was sent off in the 65th minute with his second caution. But Uzbek picked up their attack and nearly leveled the score when a direct shot on goal, fired by a streaking Nikolai Shirshov, was bobbled by Chinese goalie Jiang Jin, who recovered just as a charging Maminov arrived. China kept up their attack and were rewarded in the 80th minute when striker Fan Zhiyi’s free kick from just outside the penalty area skirted to the right of the Uzbek wall and into the right corner of the goal. “China was the strongest team tonight, for us we just weren't lucky so we lost,” disappointed Uzbek coach Vladimir Salkov said. “I was satisfied with the play of Maminov and (Mirdjalal) Kasimov, they both worked hard but just weren’t lucky,” Salkov said. During the first half China’s strikers outplayed the Uzbek defence, constantly bringing the ball forward and setting up several good chances. Their first came in the 32nd minute when defender Wu Chenying caught a deflection off of a corner kick and slammed a left-footed howitzer off the extended hand of diving Uzbek goalie Aleksey Polyakov. In the 42nd minute, Polyakov came charging out of the box only to deflect a shot by Chinese midfielder Qi Hong whose ensuing rebound trickled out of bounds just right of the goal mouth. BANGKOK: Saudi Arabia came from behind a 0-1 deficit to beat hosts Thailand 3-1 in an Asia World Cup group qualifying match at the Rajamangala National Stadium. The victory propelled the visitors from No 3 position in the group to No 2 with seven points behind group leader Iran, which has eight points. In the three previous matches, Saudi Arabia had drawn 1-1 with Iraq, lost to Iran 0-2 and beaten Iraq 1-0. Thailand came into the match with a 0-4 loss to Iraq, a 0-0 tie with Iran and a 1-1 tie with Bahrain to finish bottom in the group. The two teams observed a minute’s silence before the match to pay their respects to the victims of the terrorist attacks in the USA on Tuesday. The hosts got off to a great start when Anurak Srikerd fired a fierce shot from the 30 yard line but Saudi goalie Mohamed S. Babker did not let it go. Two minutes later, Anurak made another attempt only to be denied by Babker again. In the 28th minute, Thailand broke the Jinx when Kiartisa Senamuang beat the Saudi defence before passing the ball to Sakesan Pituratana, who did not hesitate to go for the first goal of the day.
