Solidarity Day against Terrorism observed
Jatinder Sharma

Rohtak, September 18
BJP activists here burnt an effigy of Osama bin Laden as part of the National Solidarity Day against Terrorism even as the CPM charged the Vajpayee government with indulging in hypocrisy and double standards in its reactions to terrorist killings in the USA which were condemned by all.

The BJP activists, led by district chief Munish Grover and state secretary Pradip Jain, observed a two-minute silence to pay homage to those killed in terrorist attacks in the USA on September 11.

The BJP leaders criticised the ISI and SIMI for sponsoring cross-border terrorism in India and stressed for unity against terrorists.

The CPM has criticised the stance adopted by the Vajpayee government with regard to the situation arising out of terrorist attacks on the USA. The party has accused the government of going out of the way in offering all logistic support to any unilateral US retaliation against Afghanistan by overlooking national interests and international norms to deal with the menace of terrorism.

This was stated by the CPM state secretary, Mr Inderjit Singh, while addressing a public meeting at Baliana, village 10 km from here. He recalled the active role of the USA in the creation of the Taliban and even Osama bin Laden as a result of which India had to pay a huge cost in terms of loss of precious lives in Jammu and Kashmir.

The CPM leader regretted that the Vajpayee government had virtually refused to declare several human tragedies as national calamities in the past like the Orissa cyclone and the Gujarat earthquake in which thousands of lives were lost. He cautioned the government that any US blind attack on any country under the pretext of curbing terrorism would amount to an act of state terrorism.

The public meeting was organised by the party as part of the nationwide agitation demanding the scrapping of “disastrous’’ policies of the centre and the “misrule” of the Chautala government.

Under the slogan of “scrap the disastrous policies or quit”, the CPM is mobilising people to gherao Central government offices throughout the state and court arrests in various districts between Setember 25 and 27.

The Socialist Unity Centre of India has also criticised the Centre stating that the Vajpayee government had offered the country’s military bases for use against terrorists even without a request from the US Government.

Our Correspondents add:

Cong condemns attacks on Sikhs
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 18
The Haryana Congress has condemned the attacks on Sikhs in the USA and the UK following terrorist attacks in New York and Washington on September 11 last.

In a statement issued here today the chairman of the Minority Department of the party, Mr Jagdeep Singh Cheema, said the attacks on the Sikh community called for introspection by the SGPC and other bodies claiming to be the “monopolists of the leadership of the Sikhs”.

He said it was unfortunate that the Sikhs, even after 500 years of existence of their religion, had to hang placards round their necks to tell the people who they were. He was surprised that even in a modern society like the USA, where over two lakh US citizens had embraced Sikhism, acts of barbarism were being perpetrated against a community.

Mr Cheema alleged that the SGPC had failed in its prime and moral duty to spread the message of Sikhism throughout the world and it should apologise to the Sikh community for not being able to protect it.Top

USA ‘silent’ on Pak-backed terrorism
Our Correspondent

Sirsa, September 18
India should extend full support to the USA only if it vows to wipe out terrorism from the world. On the contrary if it limits the war only to Bin Laden, India should consider all aspects before offering any assistance.

This was the view expressed at a seminar on “International terrorism and India’s role” organised by the local unit of Panchnad at Shiv Shakti Blood Bank hall last night.

Dr K.K. Goyal cautioned the government against the history of vested interest of America. He pointed out that America was silent on Pakistan-supported terrorism in India. The president of the local Jai Shree Educational Society, Mr Yatinder Singh, said India should ensure that the inevitable war was against terrorism and not against an individual.

Dr Ved Beniwal, president of the Panchnad, said this was high time when India removed all “madarsas” mushrooming in the country. We should build international opinion against terrorism.

Mr Ravinder Monga, Dr Talwar, Dr G.K. Aggarwal, Dr M.R. Bansal and Dr R.M. Arora also spoke on the occasion.

Pak credibility has lowered: minister
Our Correspondent

Sonepat, September 18
The Union Minister of State for Home, Mr I.D. Swamy, has said India would not be cowed down by threats given by the Taliban of Afghanistan and it would coordinate with the international community to eliminate terrorism.

Talking to mediapersons at the residence of the RSS leader, Prof Bajrang Lal Gupta, in Sector 14 here last night, he said that India was prepared to accept cooperation and assistance from any country of the world in its fight against the terrorism, and this was the reason that India had decided to assist the USA in its mission against terrorism.

He said the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, had already deputed his Security Adviser, Mr Brijesh Misra, to negotiate with the USA in this respect while keeping in mind the national interest of the country. The minister said the entire country would face the challenge against terrorism and the Opposition parties had shown their solidarity with the government.

He said the bargaining tactics adopted by Pakistan had lowered its credibility and said the USA should not trust Pakistan. The USA should not accept any condition of Pakistan for giving assistance to it in this regard. The history of Pakistan, he said, proved that the Pakistani rulers had never been true to their words and had always betrayed India on this issue.

Referring to a question, the minister said the Central Government wanted to solve the temple dispute at Ayodhya through negotiations and the Prime Minister, Mr Vajpayee, had already initiated the process. He said the BSF and CRPF officers would visit Sonepat and Karnal soon to recruit the Haryana youths for their units respectively.
