Replacement of working meters illegal: manch
Our Correspondent

Panipat, September 8
State convener of the Jan Sangarsh Manch Sudesh Kumari yesterday charged the state government with irrational approach in implementing its new policy of replacing 35 lakh electricity meters with EMCO meters.

Talking to mediapersons here yesterday, she questioned the authenticity and legality of replacing old meters by pointing out that it was not only illegal under Section 26 (6) of the Indian Electricity Act, 1910, but also an unnecessary burden of Rs 600 crore which ultimately would be borne by people of the state.

She said the government was empowered to change only faulty meters, not those which were working properly. But the government had been forcibly replacing all meters and it was the violation of this Act.

Refuting the government claim that new meters were being installed to check line losses and power theft, she said it was impossible to check line losses through the meters as the line losses were from the supply lines.

She said the old meters could be made tempar-proof. “If power theft can be checked by spending only Rs 12, what is the necessity to install new meters and putting unnecessary burden of Rs 1,250 on every consumer,” she asked.
