Haryana BJP fails to persuade high command Chandigarh, September 2 ‘’We conveyed to the party leadership, including Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, Home Minister L.K Advani and party President Jana Krishnamurthy, that it was the right time to review relations with Chautala,’’ a top party source told The Tribune today. He, however, said that the Central party leadership did not seem prepared to review ties with Mr Chautala and asked a delegation of party leaders that they should cooperate with the NDA partner. The state leadership recently had four meetings with the Prime Minister on the issues of announcement of the minimum support price, the SYL and pending projects and on a national issue relating to an official memorandum of the Scheduled Castes affecting the filling of posts and their promotions. The issue of the review of relations cropped up during these interactions with the Central party leadership. The state unit was advised to build up the party to become number one in the state on its own steam, the source said. The party, however, got an assurance from Mr Advani he would come for rallies being organised from November onwards in five constituencies of the BJP MPs beginning from Mahendragarh. The party would hold other rallies at Faridabad, Ambala, Karnal and Sonepat in the following months with the presence of top party leaders. The state unit got an assurance from Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu that he would attend a workers’ meeting in Ambala this month. The state unit also urged the Prime Minister to come for a state-level rally whose date had not yet been fixed but did not get any assurance. The source declined roping in Union Agriculture Minister Ajit Singh to boost their campaign due to his known antipathy to Mr Chautala. The party had not, in fact, thought in that direction, the source said The complaint of the BJP leadership came in the backdrop of the party feeling deceived at the hands of Mr Chautala in the last Assembly poll. The party leaders had also been attacking the Chief Minister for not taking them into his confidence in decision making despite being alliance partners. Certain party leaders, including the leader of the legislative wing of the party, Mr Krishan Pal Gujjar, are facing vigilance inquiries showing the kind of relations the alliance partners have. |
Faridabad rally acid test of Cong Faridabad, September 2 Although the elections in the Haryana Assembly are still far-off, the turnout at the Faridabad rally will indicate the level of people’s satisfaction with the work of the INLD led by Mr Om Prakash Chautala. Faridabad is considered to be a stronghold of Mr Bhajan Lal who had won the Lok Sabha seat here in 1989 with a record margin. Though the Haryana Congress is faction-ridden, group leaders are learnt to have been directed by the party high command to attend the rally along with their supporters. According to Mr Kuldip Bishnoi, former MLA and son of Mr Bhajan Lal, senior Congress leaders Mr Kamal Nath, Mr Natwar Singh, Ms Mohansana Kidwai, Haryana Congress president, Mr Bhupinder Hooda and Mr Birender Singh will attend the rally. Mr Bhajan Lal’s son Mr Bishnoi and Mr Chander Mohan, Kalka MLA who have been assigned the task of making the arrangements for the rally have been camping here. They are organising several meetings daily in various villages alongwith senior district leaders, asking people to attend the rally in large numbers. Mr Bishnoi today held a meeting of activists of the National Students Union of India in Sector 16. He said the Chautala government had failed on all fronts. A large number of industries had been closed down rendering lakhs of workers jobless. Electric supply was erratic and roads were in pitiable condition. The law and order situation had also worsened, he added. |
Sammelan held to strengthen
BJP Ambala, September 2 The sammelan, presided over by a former Delhi Health Minister, Dr Harsh Vardhan, was organised to strengthen the party. Dr Vardhan admitted that there was discontentment towards the INLD government. A number of suggestions were made by the office-bearers, including holding of frequent meetings, providing regular information to the activists and holding programmes like those concerning positive social issues. Dr Vardhan said that he had been given the responsibility of holding such sammelan at Ambala, Panchkula and Karnal. We are introspecting and further strengthening the party. It is clear we started from only two seats in 1984 and now our government has become the longest serving non-Congress government. We are going from strength to strength,” he said. Criticising the Congress governments, he said the maximum number of scams had taken place during the Congress regime. |

De-addiction camp evokes good response Jakhal (Fatehabad), September 2 He used to take 30 to 35 injections till last Sunday when he joined a drug de-addiction camp organised by the police-public coordination forum, Paryaas, at the local Aggarwal Dharamsala. The only brother of six sisters. Dimple is one of the 60 drug-addicts convalescing in the camp. The camp was inaugurated on August 26. Dimple has not taken any drugs for the past six day. Though he complains of pain in his body and some other minor problems, he is satisfied that he has been able to say goodbye to drugs that he had been ruining his body. Jagtar Singh, 24, who used to be a truck driver, is another example of youths taking to drugs. He first took drugs at the age of 14 when he was a cleaner in a truck. Slowly, opium and poppy husk became his regular needs. Life suddenly seems to have taken a turn for the good for him when the sarpanch of his village took him to the de-addiction camp on Sunday. He feels he will not need drugs again. Gurnam Singh (40),Janta Singh (41), Bhima (31), Tarsem (35) and Major Singh (37) are some other addicts who started taking drugs at quite an early age. In most of these cases, land owners of these land-less labourers were responsible for their addiction. The land owners gave them drugs so that they could extract maximum work for minimum wages. Gradually, they became dependent on these drugs and their condition deteriorated. The district police
chief, Mr Hanif Qureshi, who is the brains behind the camp, said he felt that the drug addicts were victims who had fallen prey to vested interests. He said the district police had launched a two-pronged strategy to combat drug menace in the district. It has launched an offensive against drug traffickers and taken upon itself the cause of treating those who had fallen prey to drugs. |
