Minimum attendance norm sparks off protest

City college students have decided to go on strike from tomorrow against the decision of the Panjab University to implement the increase in the minimum lectures to be attended in colleges from the present 66 per cent to 75 per cent.

CTU buses for pvt schools now

All private schools of the city will now be able to use buses of the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) from September 1, according to a decision in this regard by the Chandigarh Administration.

Shock treatment for power thieves

After a raid to detect power pilferage here today, the UHVVN slapped a Rs 1,57,500 penalty on two residents of Panchkula.

26-hr-long power cut in village
Zirakpur, August 27
Over 26-hr-long power cut in Singhpura and six nearby villages brought misery to villagers on the second consecutive day today. Normal life was put out of gear and villagers were forced to trudge miles to fetch water for their daily consumption. Residents of these villages complained that there was no electricity since Sunday morning.

Member of the Footpath Cycle Workers Union held a protest rally outside the UT Estate Office today in support of their demands. Later, they also submitted a charter of demands to the UT Deputy Commissioner, Mr M. Ramsekhar. The protesters also raised slogans against the authorities concerned outside the MC office.

MC employees stage dharna
SAS Nagar, August 27
Protesting against the move of the Punjab Government to abolish octroi, the employees of the local municipal council staged on a one-day dharna and raised slogans against the state government. The employees sought that if political considerations were weighing heavy on the government, alternative arrangement to make up for the loss should be made.

546 commuters challaned
Chandigarh, August 27
The traffic police, in association with the police personnel drawn from various police stations in the city launched a special drive in the city. As many as 546 commuters were challaned in different parts of the city during the three-hour drive.

An eight-year-old girl, Manu, was killed when a wooden door in a newly constructed house in Sector 21 fell on her.

Three cars recovered
Panchkula, August 27
The Panchkula police claimed to have recovered three stolen cars, a Ford Icon and two Marutis, and a scooter from different places and arrested two persons in this regard.

JPC visits NIPER for evaluation

A parliamentary committee on fertilisers and chemicals visited the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) here yesterday as part of its study tour. The Chairman of the committee, Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav, however, was not part of this 11-member committee.

MC plea dismissed with costs

Coming down heavily on Faridabad Market Committee for trying to “frustrate the efforts of a poor workman to seek justice”, Mr Justice S.S. Nijjar of the High Court today imposed a cost of Rs 5,000 before dismissing its petition against the Labour Court’s order directing the reinstatement of a worker with back wages.

The Chandigarh Badminton Association (CBA) will organise its annual state-level badminton championships from September 19 to 22 on the new scoring system as envisaged by the Badminton Association of India. This was stated by Mr Gian Chand Gupta, President of the association.

New appointment for A.K. Sen

The Chief Engineer of Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Mr A.K. Sen, has been appointed Engineer-in-Chief in the Special Services Bureau, a statement issued here today said. This marks the upgradation in the appointments in the engineering cadre of the ITBP from Deputy Inspector-General to Inspector-General.
