Extend deadline: bus operators
Chandigarh, August 21
With just 10 days to go for the deadline to phase out 15-year-old buses from school routes, the Chandigarh School Bus Operators Welfare Association has said the deadline earlier fixed for August 31 should be extended and be implemented from the next new academic session year.

Efforts fail to retrieve truck from Ghaggar
Zirakpur, August 21
Efforts to retrieve a truck washed away by the strong current of the swelling Ghaggar over a week ago proved futile on the third consecutive day today. Despite pressing three cranes into the operation, the truck could not be retrieved as the water level in the river rose following a heavy rain this morning.
A partially visible truck which was spotted on the Ghaggar riverbed near Bhankharpur village, along the Chandigarh-Ambala highway, after being washed away by the strong water current up to a distance of 1 km downstream during the recent floods.

New Mayor felicitated
Chandigarh, August 21
While visitors kept coming in to greet the new Mayor of the city, Ms Harjinder Kaur, in her office, she was felicitated at some other functions during the day. She was felicitated at a special congregation held at Gurdwara Sahib, Sector 46 for becoming the first Mayor of the city from the Sikh community.

Musician’s body cremated in USA

The body of 32-year-old Indian musician, who was shot and then burnt in the USA in June this year, was finally laid to rest by his father. Body of an unidentified 12-year-old boy was found floating in a pond adjoining Matour village here today. The police believe that the deceased belonged to a family of migrant labourers.

IT centre to open on Aug 29

An information technology centre of the Chandigarh Administration will start functioning at Punjab Engineering College (PEC) from August 29. The centre has been set up in an area of 3,000 sq feet.

Life term for 2 in murder case
Chandigarh, August 21
Charanjit, a resident of SAS Nagar, and Jitender Bhalla, a resident of Chandigarh, were today convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment by a local court in a case of murder.

Couple gets life term for killing son-in-law
Panchkula, August 21
The Additional Sessions Judge today sentenced Krishan Lal and his wife Banto, residents of Kesri village in Mullana in Ambala district, to life imprisonment for murdering their son-in-law, Sushil Kumar, in 1998. The third accused in the case, Neelam, wife of Sushil Kumar, has been acquitted.
