Jacob inaugurates trauma ward

A 30-bedded trauma ward at the Sector 16 General Hospital was inaugurated by the UT Administrator, Lieut-Gen J.F.R. Jacob, (retd) today. The trauma unit, constructed at the cost of Rs 13 lakh, comprises 12 beds for males and 16 for females, will cater to the needs of patients requiring orthopaedics and surgical emergency treatment.

In the near future, besides other facilities, the emergency services of the hospital will also have the facility of a CT scan. Speaking on the occasion, General Jacob stressed upon the need to have a CT scan in all emergency wards of the city.

The UT Director, Health Services, Dr Rameshwar Chander, said there was a proposal for tying up with a private CT scan operator to provide the required facility. According to him, the machine would be installed on the fourth floor of the main building.

While the first floor of the emergency, which has been converted into trauma unit, will deal with orthopaedics and surgery cases. And the cases pertaining to medical and paediatric emergency will be treated on the ground floor emergency ward.

Besides this, the other changes in the hospital also include the shifting of the CCU and ICU units from the basement of the main building near the medical emergency to reduce the critical time while shifting the patients from emergency to ICU.

Both the emergencies would be fully equipped with life-supporting equipment. The cardiac and central monitoring units are also being installed and tenders have already been placed for ventilators.

The Adviser to UT Administrator, Ms Neeru Nanda, informed General Jacob that Rs 13 lakh had been spent on the construction of trauma ward on the first floor and Rs 3.15 lakh for the CCU and ICU wards. While making a round of the hospital she also enquired about the possibility of adding a waiting room for the attendants of patients admitted to the maternity ward and a new canteen for the hospital.

Meanwhile, the second phase expansion of the trauma ward which includes an operation theatre and a room for the attending doctors would be constructed next to the trauma ward. General Jacob also asked the Chief Architect and the Chief Engineer to explore the possibility of adding one more floor to double-storeyed old building to expand the emergency facilities for the future.

Later, General Jacob took a round of the trauma ward and also interacted with the patients. On this occasion, a blood donation camp was also organised.

Cancer detection camp opened

A cancer detection camp for the benefit of wives of the armed forces personnel was inaugurated by the regional president of the Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA), Ms Deep Surjit Singh, at the Western Command Hospital, Chandimandir today.

Organised as a part of the raising day celebrations of the association the four-day camp will focus on educating women about cancer, besides conducting a thorough check-up of more than 400 women by a panel of doctors drawn from the Command Hospital.

A photo exhibition on cancer and health care was also put up on the occasion.

A statement issued here said that in India, cancers of cervix and breast were the most commonly seen amongst women above 30 years of age. These cancers were curable if detected in early stages, when warning signals could be identified by the person concerned herself.

Meanwhile, a declamation contest on “Should the joint family system in India continue?” was organised at the Manekshaw Auditorium. The AWWA anniversary celebrations will conclude on August 23 with the presentation of a cultural show by children of Asha School, an institute for physically and mentally challenged children being run by the AWWA, and the distribution of prizes for various competitions held to mark the occasion.

AIDS awareness workshop

To create awareness about HIV and AIDS amongst the roadside barbers, hair dressers and beauty saloon workers, the Surya Foundation and Citizens Awareness Group, a non-government organisation (NGO), in collaboration with the State AIDS Control Society, UT, is organising workshops in various parts of the city.

Under this targeted intervention on prevention and control of the disease, an awareness camp was today organised at the Industrial Training Institute(ITI), Sector 28.

St Stephen’s eves are football champs again

It was jubilation time for the St Stephen’s energetic soccer eves when they captured the St Stephen’s Challenger Trophy for the second consecutive year by blasting Guru Teg Bahadur School, Sector 15, by nine goals to nil, in the second Chandigarh Junior Girls Football Championship , which concluded today at St Stephen’s school, Sector 45. Jasdeep was the star attraction for the spectators when she scored five goals.

The match began with both teams trying to keep the ball to middle of the ground and this trend continued for 10 minutes. At this moment, host school started dominating the scene, with first goal scored by right striker Jasdeep in 11th minute. Again she scored second goal in 13th minute with a powerful kick. St Stephen’s eves again struck back with third goal scored in a span of two minutes by Sumita. Jasdeep was again in form when she scored goal via penalty kick. At half-time, the score was 4-0 in favour of host school. After lemon break, five more goals were scored by St Stephen’s, with goals scored by Jasmeet (one), Jasdeep (two) and Richa Walia (two).

Sub-jr football

Sanjay Public School, Sector 44, will take on Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 23, in the final of the Chandigarh Sub-Junior Football Championship for Sanjay Trophy played here today at Football Stadium, Sector 17. In the first semi-final tie, Sanjay School boys blanked St Xavier’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, at 6-0. The first goal was scored in third minute of the match. Right striker Jaavir opened the account for his team by scoring first goal with solo effort. Sanjay school boys managed to score second goal in ninth minute when their left striker Naresh dribbled passed two defenders and beat the rival goalkeeper with a angular shot. Sanjay lads scored their third goal in 20th minute when their right winger Sushil fielded a third goal with solo effort. The half-time score was 3-0 in favour of Sanjay School.

After the lemon break, three more goals were added in 35th, 40th and 43rd minutes and the scorers were Naresh, Kuldeep and Jasvir.

In the second semi-final tie, GMSSS-23 downed Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 15, at 4-1 with half- time score of 1-1. Sandeep, Mehtab, Varinder scored for winners and Ramesh for the losers.

TT tournament

Dheeraj Arora of RBI bagged the men singles title when he outplayed Mandeep Walia also of RBI in the 15th Acharya memorial Inter Bank and Financial Table Tennis Tournament, which concluded last evening here. Dheeraj won at 7-11, 11-6, 10-12, 11-8, 11-6, 12-10. Surinder Kumar Regional Director RBI gave away the prizes. RBI ‘A’ team won the trophy in team championship. Rakesh Mehta of Punjab and Sind Bank received the veteran singles prize.

Carrom rankings

The Chandigarh Carrom Association has announced the current rankings of city carrom players in order of merit. Tennis tourney

Satluj Public School, Sector 4, will organise Open Lawn Tennis Tournament on August 24 and 25 on the school premises. The events to be organised include below-12, below-14, below-16 sections. According to Mr Krit Serai, Principal of the school, the matches will be conducted daily from 9 am to 7 pm.

Under-14 cricket

The UT Cricket Association Chandigarh will organise under-14 Inter-School Cricket Tournament for St Kabir Trophy in the Cricket Stadium, Sector 16, from September 3. Participating schools will have to submit age proof certificates of their players. The last date of entries is August 29.

Probables’ list

The following under-14 cricket probables have been selected in the Chandigarh district cricket team for the Punjab Inter-District Cricket Tournament to be held next month. The final 16 players will be selected in the first week of September. The probables have been asked to report tomorrow at 3.30 pm at DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8.

The probables are Udhey Kaul, Sidharth Sharma, Simranjeet Singh, Naresh, Karanbir, Manjinder, Vishal, Gurkirat, Shurab, Sumit, Anupam, Gunjot, Amit, Yudhistar, Lakhwinder, Surat, Mukal, Jaskaran, Sidharth Kaul, Samanjit Bawa, Avijit Singh, Gaurav Chopra, Amanjit, Gaurav Gambhir, Amit Prashar, Rajnish, Varinder and Tanjit. This was stated by Mr Mohinder Singh, secretary of the Chandigarh Cricket Association.

Selection trials

Trials to select the Chandigarh under-19 team for the Punjab Inter-District Cricket Tournament for Dhruv Pandove Trophy will be held on August 25 at DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8. Players born after September 30, 1982, will be eligible for the trials.

The Chandigarh Cricket Association will hold the selection trials on August 22 at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19. As per Mr Surinder Singh, secretary of the CCA, the players born after September 1, 1979, will be eligible to take part.

MC to allot institutional sites

The Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh has decided to allot six institutional sites to the institutions, organisations and associations of persons by inviting applications.

Disclosing this here today, a spokesman of Haryana government said that the sites measuring over 2982 sq yards each in pocket number one along Chandigarh-Kalka road at Manimajra at the rate of Rs.5800 per sq.yard would be allotted to the institution of non-profit making character.

He said that those institutions would be eligible for allotment which directly serves the interest of the population and conducive to the planned development of the Union Territory of Chandigarh. The institution should be in existence for at least five years.

He said that the corporation had also invited applications for the office building at the rate of Rs.7200 per sq.yard along with earnest money of Rs.21.50 lakh from central and state government and Public Sector undertakings, boards and corporations and other semi-government organisations.

He said that the Haryana government, through a circular, has asked all its administrative secretaries, heads of departments, offices, organisations, associations for applying as per need by September 14.

F&CC to discuss development project

The Finance and Contract Committee ( F and CC) meeting scheduled for August 24, the first under the chairmanship of the new Mayor, Ms Harjinder Kaur, will take up various agenda items pertaining to developmental projects.

The major items listed on the agenda include provision of additional storm-water drainage for underground parking in Sector 17-C; fixation of reserve price of 136 commercial items and built-up booths in various sectors of Mani Majra and Mauli Jagran; allotment of the first floor of Raen Basera in Mani Majra to some NGO on rent. Others items to be considered by the members pertain to estimates for the development of pocket No. 6 of Mani Majra, on the Chandigarh-Kalka road. Estimates for channelisation and stone pitching of nullah running along the pocket No. 6 will also be considered.

Among other items listed on the agenda are revised estimate for construction of cement store shed in the Industrial Area, Phase-I, strengthening of roads from Chandigarh-Kalka road to Mansa Devi road and estimates for recarpeting of the V-6 roads in Sectors 30-A and C. Another item pertains to the supply of uniforms to drivers, shoes and woollen jerseys to eligible staff of the Medical Officer of the Health Wing.
