Rain brings down roof on family; 2 killed
Road washed away again
Zirakpur, August 14
A migrant labourer and his three-year-old daughter were buried alive and two other persons sustained serious injuries when the roof of a house where they were sleeping collapsed due to a heavy rain in Bartana village near here today.

Panjab University has decided not to give admission to students who have less than 20 per cent marks in Class XII examinations, but wish to join the BA, B.Sc and B.Com courses in its colleges.

Octroi evasion on cement in SAS Nagar

Evasion of octroi on cement is going on right under the nose of local municipal council officials. By a rough estimate over 10,000 bags of cement land every month at godowns in Kumbhra village, located outside the limits of the civic body.

7 city residents to be honoured today

MC opens ‘locked doors’

The Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh, opened six community centres here today that had been lying closed for the past many months due to a controversy on the inauguration. Orders to this effect were issued by the UT Administrator, Lieut-Gen (retd) J.F.R. Jacob, to the MC Commissioner yesterday.

Constable suspended
Chandigarh, August 14
A drunk police constable, posted in the Police Control Room, allegedly lost 10 rounds and a magazine of carbine late last night. The cop, Ajit Singh, has now been placed under suspension.

An employee of the Haryana Architect Department has been arrested on charges of fraud and for indulging in corruption.

2 arrested in dowry death case
Panchkula, August 14
The Panchkula police has arrested two of the seven accused, Govardhan and Iqbal Singh, father-in-law and husband of the victim, respectively, in Balwinder Kaur dowry case who were booked for demanding dowry yesterday. Five of the accused in this case are still at large.

Sultry weather, six hours of power cuts, erratic water supply, roads reduced to streets of cobbled stones, poor standard of living, political upheavals and Tehelka explosions — nothing seems to kill the feeling of patriotism among the school students. Despite the feeling of “disillusionment” among some of them after 53-years of Independence, the students still love their country.

GH-16 to have new operation theatre
Chandigarh, August 14
The Sector 16 General Hospital will soon have a new operation theatre in front of its new trauma unit. The 30-bedded trauma unit, which is already complete, is expected to become operational from August 21, following which construction work for the operation theatre besides a doctor’s room will also begin.
