Rain triggers landslides in HP
200 kanals washed away in Hamirpur district

Heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh since last night have claimed one more life and triggered landslides in the region, besides disrupting flights to Shimla. A 22-year old woman identified as Gulshan was buried alive when a landslide buried a house at Kangu Galoo, 8 km from Sarkaghat in Mandi district today, the police said. She was rushed to a hospital where she died.

Janmashtami celebrated with fervour

Fervour and gaiety marked the Janmashtami, here yesterday. Thousands of devotees thronged tastefully-decorated temples in the town since early morning. Tableaus depicting the life of Lord Krishna, were the highlights at various temples.

Three killed in accidents

Three persons have been killed in separate incidents in the district today. Naresh Kumar, 20, of Kanwahal village was drowned in the village reservoir.

One person was killed and two others were injured when a Punjab-bound mini-truck coming from Lahaul and loaded with peas met with an accident at Baradhibir near here on the Mandi-Sundernagar road today.

Sales tax barrier moved

Keeping in view the heavy traffic of trucks from Shimla during the apple season, the State Excise and Sales Tax Department has shifted the sales tax barrier from the Parwanoo inter-state barrier to Dhalli on the National Highway.

The second group of Manimahesh pilgrims, numbering about 500, coming from Bhaderwah in Jammu and Kashmir, this afternoon has crossed the Padri Gali, the borderline of Chamba district in Himachal Pradesh to take their holy bath at the Manimahesh Lake on Sri Radha Ashtmi.

Rain triggers landslides in HP

Heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh since last night have claimed one more life and triggered landslides in the region, besides disrupting flights to Shimla.

A 22-year old woman identified as Gulshan was buried alive when a landslide buried a house at Kangu Galoo, 8 km from Sarkaghat in Mandi district today, the police said. She was rushed to a hospital where she died. With this, the death toll in rain-related incidents in Himachal Pradesh has risen to 22 so far.

Rivers and rivulets were in spate following heavy rains in their catchment areas. However, they were flowing below the danger mark.

An Indian Airlines flight to Shimla and Kulu from Delhi was cancelled due to bad weather in the region, whereas several areas, including Shimla, remained enveloped in a thick fog reducing visibility considerably.

The rain caused landslides at some places in the state. The Mandi-Pathankot road was blocked due to a landslide near Parore, 10 km from Palampur, in Kangra district. The traffic was diverted via Nagri-Palampur road. The landslides have also occurred on the 320-km Hindustan-Tibet Road, blocking it near Malling in Kinnaur district.

However, train services to Shimla and movement of vehicular traffic on various national and state highways were normal.

As many as 21 persons have died in rain-related incidents in the state so far. A report from Hamirpur said life was affected in all parts of the district due to incessant heavy rains since yesterday. The rain disrupted the power, water supply and telecommunication services in the district. Reports of house collapse due to heavy rains have been received from many areas of the district. However, the authorities were yet to tell the exact number of house collapses as it was still collecting figures from the field agencies, the report added.

HAMIRPUR: About 200 kanals of fertile land was washed away due to heavy rains in the Galore belt of Hamirpur district on Monday. However, no loss to the human or animal life was reported as the rains started around 7 a.m. and ended around 2 p.m. During the period water entered houses between Budhwin chowk and Galore road and all houses in the Galore Khas were submerged under 2 to 3 feet of deep water.

Mr Anil Verma, former pradhan of the local gram panchayat, told the reporter that the loss to the crops and the fertile land was worth several lakhs of rupees. He said people were still panicky as the nullah was still overflowing.

The main road leading from Galore to Salauni was badly damaged. Water was flowing on the main road, even when the reporters left for Hamirpur.

Villagers lamented that they had received no help and relief from the district administration. They said that although the authorities were informed in time yet none visited them.

When contacted, Mr Rajeev Shanker Sharma, officiating Deputy commissioner of Hamirpur, said the SDM of Nadaun had been deputed to make on the spot study of the situation and all out help would be provided to the flood victims.

He said that he was visiting the area personally to see the situation.

Traffic on the Hamirpur-Una highway was also disrupted for some hours today due to damage to a culvert near Bhota town.

PALAMPUR: Life was completely disrupted following heavy rain on Sunday resulting in huge loss to property. The rain which began at 8 p.m. lasted for about 10 hours. Traffic on various roads remained suspended for hours because of heavy landslides. The Pathankot-Manali national highway was the worst-hit, where thousands of passengers were stranded. There was a heavy landslide at Parour, about 10 km from here. Mr P.C. Mishra, Executive Engineer, National Highway Division, told mediapersons that all efforts were being made to clear the road. He said heavy machinery had been put into service at all strategic points so that the Army supplies being carried to Leh were not delayed. However, till evening traffic could not be restored.

According to reports available, here, two bridges on Palampur-Panchrukhi road were completely washed away because of heavy rains. Another bridge on Nagrota-Pathiar road was also damaged. Power supply and telecommunication services were adversely affected. Rural areas remained without power for 20 hours as electricity poles were uprooted at various places.

Janmashtami celebrated with fervour

Fervour and gaiety marked the Janmashtami, here yesterday.

Thousands of devotees thronged tastefully-decorated temples in the town since early morning. Tableaus depicting the life of Lord Krishna, were the highlights at various temples.

The Janmashtami Mela Committee organised a Janmnashtami function at the Nagar Parishad ground where Dr Suraj Bhan, Governor of Himachal Pradesha and Dr Run Lal Markandey, P.W.D. Minister, Himachal Pradesh, also visited.

A function was also organised at Shiv Mandir near Shivalik Hotel in Sector 1-A. Hundreds of residents of this sector and the people from the surrounding areas visited the temple and offered prayers.

The Sarv Dharam Sabha organised the Janmashtmi function at Shiv Shakti Shirdi Sai Baba temple at Sector 5 here. Thousands of industrial workers, residents from the various sector; of this town offered prayers throughout the day. Main attraction of the function was the “Ras Lila” depicting various aspects of Lord Krishna’s life. Despite heavy drizzling, the number of devotees continued to swell. Mr Satish Berry, president of the sabha, announced that a community kitchen and lunch would organised on August 19 on the occasion of the sixth day of the birth of Lord Krishna and different programmes would also be organised on that day.

Three killed in accidents

Three persons have been killed in separate incidents in the district today. Naresh Kumar, 20, of Kanwahal village was drowned in the village reservoir.

In another incident, Mohan (47), died near Sauli khad here when the tractor he was driving turned turtle. According to a report from Kangu Galu (Sarkaghat), a newly married woman, Gulshan (21), was buried under the landslide.

One person was killed and two others were injured when a Punjab-bound mini-truck coming from Lahaul and loaded with peas met with an accident at Baradhibir near here on the Mandi-Sundernagar road today. The injured persons have been admitted to the local Regional Hospital. Their condition is to stated to be out of danger.

The deceased has been identified as Sonu, 20, a resident of Ropar. The body has been sent for a post-mortem to the Regional Hospital. The injured persons have been identified as Kuldip Singh of Ropar, Ganesh of Chiuni village of the district. The SDM went to the spot and disbursed an immediate relief of Rs 2,000 each among those injured in the accident.

Sales tax barrier moved

Keeping in view the heavy traffic of trucks from Shimla during the apple season, the State Excise and Sales Tax Department has shifted the sales tax barrier from the Parwanoo inter-state barrier to Dhalli on the National Highway. This barrier has been established for the traffic coming from Shimla and the upward traffic from Kalka will halt at the Parwanoo barrier for sales tax. This arrangement has been made to regulate the traffic and minimise traffic jams.

An example of “honesty still exists”, came to light here when traffic policemen returned to the owner a bag containing some money and documents.

A man who works as a small savings agent in the local post office found his bag which contained some money and important papers missing from his scooter when he reached home. To his surprise, he received a telephone call from the traffic police that his bag was lying with them, deposited by a person who was coming from Kalka. The bag was handed over to the owner with the cash and papers intact.

Eight of the nine persons arrested by the Parwanoo Police for dacoity and murder, have been remanded in judicial custody. The leader of the gang, Jaswant Singh alias Bunty, has been handed over to the CIA wing of Solan Police. According to the police, Jaswant Singh has confessed his involvement in the murder of an employee of the local Nagar Parishad on Parwanoo-Tipra road in 1997.

According to Mr Sanjeev Lakhanpal, Deputy Superintendent of Police, the gang has also confessed its involvement in other dacoities Parwanoo and its surrounding areas. This gang had been on police remand till August 2, and now they have been given judicial remand.

Green Parwanoo Society plans to celebrate vanmahotsav next week. According to Mr T.N. Gupta, convener of the society, about 1000 saplings will be distributed among various organisations, schools, and industrial units. Thakur Roop Singh, Forest Minister of Himachal Pradesh, is expected to be the chief guest on the occasion.

Manimahesh pilgrims enter Chamba district

The second group of Manimahesh pilgrims, numbering about 500, coming from Bhaderwah in Jammu and Kashmir, this afternoon has crossed the Padri Gali, the borderline of Chamba district in Himachal Pradesh to take their holy bath at the Manimahesh Lake on Sri Radha Ashtmi. According to official reports, the Rashtriya Rifles, CRPF and Jammu and Kashmir police escorted the group.

Meanwhile, the Superintendent of Chamba, Mr Sanjay Kundu, said the pilgrims were yet to be handed over to the ITBP, and Himachal police who would escort them on these onward journey to the Manimahesh lake via Langera, Salooni Chamba and Bharmour.
