BJP ‘not taken into confidence’ by Chautala
govt Jind, July 24 Mr Kohli was replying to a question at a press conference held here yesterday. Mr Kohli was here in connection with the meeting of party workers. He said the Chautala government had not taken the BJP into confidence while formulating policies. Therefore, coordination between the INLD and the BJP was declining in the state. He admitted that BJP leaders were not invited at the
pragati rally organised by the INLD at Bhiwani. On being asked whether the BJP would withdraw support from the Chautala government as demanded by certain BJP workers, Mr Kohli said only the central leadership of the party was competent to take a decision on this issue. He said the BJP would do nothing to destabilise the Chautala government because of alliance politics. He said the INLD leadership should not ignore BJP workers and its leaders in the state. Referring to the induction of Mr Ajit Singh in the Union Cabinet, Mr Kohli said it was the prerogative of the Prime Minister to include any member of Parliament in his Cabinet. He said no alliance partner had the right to raise objection in this regard. Earlier, Mr Kohli addressed a meeting of party workers in the local Seva Sadan. Ways and means to strengthen the party at the village level were discussed at the meeting. Mr Kohli said there was no dissidence in the party at any level in the state. He said if there was a misunderstanding among the party workers it would be removed. Office-bearers of the district units of Sonepat, Jind, Rohtak and Jhajjar and BJP leaders of these districts participated in the meeting. |

Govt ignoring SYL issue: Hooda Faridabad, July 24 Expressing unhappiness over the alleged misuse of official machinery in organising a public rally at Bhiwani today, leaders and activists of various opposition parties criticised the functioning of the state government. The Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) president, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, and the chief of the state unit of the Janata Dal (United), Mr Ved Prakash Vidrohi flayed the Chautala government for its “failures” on various fronts. In almost identical statements, Congress and JD(U) leaders accused the Chautala government of ignoring the SYL issue which has been pending for several years. They said that though the SYL was the lifeline of farmers of southern Haryana, the state government had failed to make any progress on the issue. Alleging that the Chief Minister had been making tall claims of progress in various fields, Mr Hooda said the SYL issue was being sidelined, even though Mr Chautala had promised to give top priority to it just before the elections. According to Mr Vidrohi, the “failure” of the government to solve the SYL problem was the main issue before Haryana at present. |
Private parties lukewarm to godown
scheme Chandigarh, July 24 While no tender at all was reportedly received for the construction of godowns in Kurukshetra ( 30,000 MT capacity at Kurukshetra, 35,000 MT at Shahbad and 10,000 MT at Pehowa) and Karnal (40,000 MT at Karnal and 20,000 MT at Taraori), private parties were generally found not interested in setting up godowns on locations on the G T Road as well as other areas where the land prices were high. The state government is planning to have godowns, with a capacity to store six lakh tonnes of grain, built by private parties which will be used by Hafed and the Haryana Warehousing Corporation (HWC) on a monthly rental basis. The godowns are required to be handed over by private parties to the two state agencies by December 31 so that paddy purchased during the kharif procurement season can be stored in these. While the tenders opened on July 11, the deadline fixed in the first advertisement issued by the state government regarding the construction of godowns by private parties, were found inadequate, the next bunch of tenders received in response to the second advertisement will be reportedly opened on July 27. Though it is expected that there will be a better response following the relaxation of the condition about proximity to a railway yard, nobody in official circles really believes that the target of having six lakh tonnes storage capacity built by private parties before December 31 can be achieved. Consequently, the four lakh tonne storage capacity being constructed by government agencies has assumed paramount importance even as the kharif procurement season is approaching. A panic-stricken Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, is reportedly reviewing the progress of the godowns being built by state agencies by having meetings with the officials concerned on the 1st and 15th of every month. It is learnt that the state government wanted to have additional covered space for storing 10 lakh tonnes of grain for keeping the kharif crop. Space for six lakh tonnes was to be built by private parties. The Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) was to build additional storage for two lakh tonnes of the grain, the Haryana Agro Industries Corporation an additional capacity for 50,000 tonnes, Hafed for 25,000 tonnes and the HWC an additional capacity for 1.25 lakh tonnes. These godowns are being constructed by the government agencies on their own land using their own resources. Official sources here said that part of the godowns would be ready by December 31, while the rest of the work would be completed by February 28. The existing covered storage capacity in Haryana is reportedly 32 lakh tonnes but there is not an inch of space in these godowns as they are packed with rice and wheat procured in previous seasons. The movement of grain from the state has not picked up yet despite repeated requests by the Haryana Government. With uncertainty over the proposed move to have godowns constructed by private parties, the state government has asked the Deputy Commissioners to identify places — such as abandoned godowns, offices or schools which are not in use — for the storage of paddy. |

Indane gas shortage likely
in Haryana Chandigarh, July 24 According to informed sources, the Karnal bottling plant of Indian Oil Corporation, which caters to the needs of LPG consumers in most parts of Haryana, have run short of empty cylinders following some supply problem at the end of the manufacturer. Though the plant receives as many empty cylinders as it sends out refilled to its dealers, it is facing a shortage of cylinders because of the new LPG connections being on demand these days. The sources say to overcome the shortage of cylinders, the corporation has asked the Karnal plant to get the supply of empty cylinders from Delhi. The Karnal plant has, in turn, asked its dealers to send their vehicles to Delhi to bring empty cylinders. But there is a catch. The LPG dealers of Indane in the region are reluctant to send their trucks to Delhi because they do not have route permits to ply their vehicles in Delhi. Though the plant authorities are putting pressure on the dealers to obtain route permits for Delhi, the dealers say since they do not regularly ply their vehicles in Delhi, it will be economically unviable for them to obtain the route permits for a limited number of visits to the capital. The reluctance of the dealers to bring empty cylinders from Delhi is borne out of a number of other reasons also. It is learnt that the transport charges fixed by the corporation for empty cylinders are not lucrative. Moreover, the transporters are paid by the plant from which they bring the empty cylinders, the dealers are afraid that they may face payment problem in Delhi. The sources say if there is no early solution to the stand-off between the Karnal plant and the distributors, many a dealer would run out of LPG supply leading to a shortage of Indane LPG in the state.

Cops “break open” MC building
locks Sonepat, July 24 According to a report, the building was vacated by the Haryana Tourism Corporation last month after closing down its tourist complex which had been running into losses for the past few years. The corporation had handed over the building to the Executive Officer of the Municipal Council. The police officials, it was alleged, went to the residence of the Executive Officer to get the keys of the building but he was not there. Thereupon, they allegedly broke open the locks and occupied the building. They also put up the signboard of Civil Lines police station outside the building and kept furniture and other material in side. The police station has been functioning from tents in the Model Town area ever since it was set up a few months ago. The Chairman of the Municipal Council, Mr Satpal Goel, when contacted on telephone, said that he was not aware of the incident. Mr Goel said that he would inform the Local Bodies Minister, Mr Subhash Goel about the incident and urge him to take action against the police officials responsible for allegedly grabbing the council building. A special meeting of the councillors would also be convened to discuss the matter, he added. |

AMBALA DIARY Rahul Das Tribune News Service Ambala Titu, who is a businessman in Ludhiana, did not realise that he had a striking resemblance to Govinda till his relatives and friends started calling him Govinda. Soon, he copied Govinda’s style and mannerism. “I regularly see Govinda movies and hope to work in them soon,” said Titu, who is keen to visit Mumbai. Maybe, he will get fame ‘Chappad Phad Ke’. * * * Ambala’s 30-year-old rainfall record was broken on Monday last when Ambala City and Ambala Cantonment were inundated. This, however, did not deter politicians from making it an issue and allegaions and counter-allegations flew thick and fast. One group screamed that filling up the Diggi’s, particularly John Sahab Ki Diggi which has been converted into Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose park, had left no outlet for rainwater. The other group blamed the failure to clean the major drains. Officials, no their part, said that excessive rainfall was responsible for the situation. * * * Ambala cannot exactly be described as a fashion conscious city. But things are gradually changing. A sign of change is the inauguration of a garment manufacturing unit here. Young director of the company, Mr Hemant Mehta, said that the company would offer quality as well as innovation. The art of fashion designs entailed involving the entire team in shaping concepts, creating designs and providing the necessary ambience for every product to be launched, he said. * * * A long pending demand of the local scientific apparatus manufacturing industry for giving Ambala the status of a science city was again pressed by the MP from Ambala, Mr Ratan Lal Kataria, at the general meeting of the Science Apparatus Manufacturers Association (SAMA). The demand for science city status has been raised time and again yet nothing substantial has emerged. While Mr Kataria assured SAMA members that he would take up in the Lok Sabha this and other matters concerning the scientific apparatus manufacturing units, the members themselves are only hoping that something concrete is done so that the industry starts looking up once again. * * * The Indo-Pakistan peace march in Ambala City was well attended by school children as well as politicians belonging to different parties. A schoolboy, when asked why the march was being held, said “Bharat ke Pradhan Mantri Vajpayee aur Pakistan ke Pradhan Mantri Musharraf ke liye.” One of his classmates corrected the mistake by saying: “Musharraf Pakistan ke Pradhan Mantri nahin Mukhya Mantri hain.”

Concern over spread of
bollworm Sirsa, July 24 He said level of bollworm had crossed the BTL, level which was a dangerous level in certain pockets of Haryana and Punjab namely on Panihari in Sirsa district, Kahanwala and Bhunder villages of Mansa district. In some of the area the pest was found to be moderate but early appearance of the bollworm was alarming. The reason of this early appearance was due to the cloudy weather conditions if these prevailed for some more days, the pest was likely to spread further. Dr Monga called for educating the farmers about the integrated pest management so that they get better yield and high quality cotton without damaging the environment. For this purpose in north, IPM technology was being evaluated at four places in Hisar, Sirsa, Mansa and Sriganganagar. A village has been selected in all these district for IMP trial.
