Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, July 20
“The ESI Corporation will soon take over the charge of the 300-bedded new hospital building of the ESI, the construction of which was completed in 1997. The constructional defects have been rectified now”, Dr D.P.S. Sandhu, Director Health Services, Punjab, disclosed this while talking to Ludhiana Tribune during a health awareness programme for workers of Vardhman Spinning and General Mills, here today.

Dr Sandhu said seven ESI hospitals at Amritsar, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Phagwara, Rajpura and Mohali would be upgraded with modern equipment.

The Director stressed that the workers should not hesitate in going to ESI Hospitals for the treatment. “The ESI Hospitals are for the welfare of the workers as the cost of their treatment is reimbursed”, said Dr Sandhu.

The health awareness programme was organised for the workers and their families on the occasion of golden jubilee of the ESI Corporation.

Mr V.K. Goyal, Chief Executive of the company, while addressing the workers stressed on the need of cleanliness in life for better health and prosperity. He assured that such programmes would be organised in the future also.

Mr K.S. Dhaliwal, Deputy Director of the ESI Corporation, educated the workers in various benefits available under the ESI Scheme.

Dr Rajinder Gulati, paediatrician, talked to the workers about the spread of infection through contaminated water and food. He said diarrhoea spread mainly due to poor hygiene, over crowding and trend towards bottle-feeding rather than breast-feeding.

Dr Gulati stressed that workers should consume home-made liquid mixtures for preventing dehydration and diarrhoea. Dr Parveen Sikka informed about the causes of spread and ill effects of tuberculosis. He asked the workers to use the services of the ESI.

Dr S.P. Jagat, Zonal Deputy Director and Medical Superintendent, ESI Hospital, Ludhiana, said all specialist services would be available round the clock in the hospital.

The Municipal Corporation has evolved a novel idea of private participation for getting painted all overhead water tanks in the city in preparation for the forthcoming National Games, slated to be held in the city in September.

According to the MC Additional Commissioner, 40 overhead water tanks all over the city would be offered to private companies who, in turn, would get the tanks painted and display slogans on the domes, in connection with the games and environment at their own cost. While two-thirds of the total space; available on the tanks, would have to be utilised for displaying slogans, which would be provided by the MC, the companies could use the remaining space for their advertisement messages.
