Hold poll within 90 days of Houses dissolution: ARD

Islamabad, July 7
Heads of the ARD component parties have demanded general election in Pakistan within 90 days of the dissolution of the assemblies under the 1973 Constitution to be supervised by an independent and autonomous Election Commission.

The alliance also rejected the reconstitution of the National Security Council and demanded abandonment of the devolution programme and withdrawal of unauthorised amendments incorporated in the unanimously endorsed Constitution by the present government.

Resolutions to that effect were passed at a meeting of the ARD leaders held at Faisalabad on Friday. Briefing newsmen, ARD president Nawabzada Nasrullah said if the government did not accept their demand, the Commonwealth would be urged to expel Pakistan from it.

He said the European Union had also demanded that democracy in Pakistan should be restored within a two-year period prescribed by the Commonwealth, which would expire on October 12 this year. The US State Department had also demanded the restoration of democracy in Pakistan.

The ARD leaders criticised the inclusion of nominated governors and heads of armed forces in the National Security Council and the exclusion of civilians. Nasrullah said military dictators always blocked the progress of democracy in the country.

Musharraf had grabbed the offices of president, chief executive, Chief of Army Staff and the army joint staff committee, he said, adding that this trend would be harmful for the country. Criticising the local government elections, Nasrullah said the government was manoeuvring to get elected Nazims, Naib Nazims and general councillors of their choice. Regarding the ARD movement, Nasrullah said the movement had already been set in motion and demanded the government should allow political activities in the country. He vowed to continue the movement till the achievement of this objective.

About contradiction in the ARD stance vis-a-vis participation in the local bodies elections, Nasrullah pointed out that election of a large number of ARD-supported candidates was an expression of full confidence of the masses in political parties.

Meanwhile, Gen Pervez Musharraf said that unless the core issue of Kashmir was addressed, a reduction in tension in South Asia was unlikely, and the Kashmir issue could not be resolved without involving the people of Kashmir.

The President was addressing a group of nazims, social and political workers, women from the world of academics and literature, representatives of Kashmiri women as well as present and former federal and provincial ministers and senior government functionaries. ANI

37 Indians still in Pak jails

Lahore, July 7
At least 37 Indians are languishing in jails in the Punjab province of Pakistan even after the expiry of their sentences mostly on the charges of illegal entry or stay in Pakistan, according to official sources. Relatives of some of these Indian prisoners have pursued their cases with higher authorities of Pakistan through letters and mercy appeals but to no avail.

There is a ray of hope for these jail inmates after the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee’s announcement that India will release all Pakistani prisoners.

Kailash Devi, the widowed mother of Ranjit Kumar, is one of those Indians who have been struggling to retrieve their relatives since 1998. She wrote to Pakistani authorities and human rights organisations to help find her son.

In a letter to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, Kailash Devi wrote that her son was a student of class VIII when he suddenly disappeared from his home after a quarrel. She said, she made desperate efforts to trace him but to no avail. Finally, in May last year, she received a letter from Ranjit Kumar saying that after running away from home he had inadvertently crossed the Line of Control (LoC). He was arrested by Pakistani authorities, and was imprisoned in Gujranwala.

According to information provided by Ranjit Kumar to the HRCP, he was sent to Gujranwala jail on November 11, 1999, for three months. The detention was extended from May 6 to July 5 last year.

Later, the government further extended his detention up to December 5, 2000. Ranjit’s mother in her letter to the HRCP said her son was a victim of misunderstanding because he could not be involved in espionage as he was charged. Kailash Devi’s son is one of several such cases in which Indian prisoners have been detained indefinitely even after they completed their first sentence. Most of them were detained on charges of espionage. The majority of them were not provided any access to lawyer.

The names, addresses and the dates of expiry of the sentences are given as follows: (1) Fatima Bibi, w/o Ramzan Khan, Bombay, 28-7- 2000; (2) Mati, s/o Sita Ram, Banaris, (3) Tina Picka, w/o Rajeish, Delhi, 21-8-99; (4) Ishaq, s/o Siddique Masih, Dharam Kot, 1-6- 2000; (5) Wambo, s/o Shoha, Gujarat, 26-8-99; (6) Kundan Gheria, s/o Ishaq Gheria, Sundar Ghora, 1-4-2000; (7) Ghulam Rabbani, s/o Rukeem Din, Dhool Rai Gunaj, Kolkata, 14-7-98; (8) Peru Diyar, s/o Ghudu Lal, Piran Lal, 31-8-2000; (9) Pretam, s/o Bux Lal, Jhugi Karal, 13-7-2000; (10) Mohammad Saeed, s/o Abdul Rasheed Mahran Pur, 25-8-2000; (11) Mohammad Mislam Din, s/o Abdul Aziz, Asam Ghoai, 10-5-99; (12) Abdul Nasir, s/o Abdul Razaq, Tamal, 11-9-2000; (13) Masood Ahmed, s/o Mohammad Yaqoob, Kaldagham, Srinagar, 14-6-2000; (14) Krishan, s/o Narain, 19-11-98; (15) Hakim Singh, s/o Janib Singh, 19-11-98; (16) Gopal, s/o Dilawar Singh, Ratanpur, 10-4-2000; (17) Akka, s/o Rabbi Kak, Pony Chak, Jammu, 22-6-2000; (18) Kishan, s/o Mohan Lal, Kolkata, 26-8-99; (19) Phokan, s/o Bhudhan, Khokhar, 16-9-98; (20) Redhey Sham, s/o Bansi Lal, Kotia, Jammu and Kashmir, 15-8-99; (21) Ghangha Ram, s/o Ram Chandar, 21-1-2000; (22) Mohal, s/o Pur Singh, Gujrat, 24-10-2000; (23) Ramu Ram, s/o Shame Ram, Thakar Dhian, 1-12-2000; (24) Ghutki, s/o Feroze, Ghuwala, 2-2-2000; (25) Islam Din, s/o Shams Din, 2-3- 2000; (26) Rakesh Chand, s/o Ram Shankar, Farooqabad, 7-11-98; (27) South Bar, s/o Puri Chand, Gheraha Majra, 7-11-98; (28) Muhammad kamal, s/o Fazal, Allah Abaddilawar, 6-10-99; (29) Muhammad Saleem, s/o Ishaq, Bharut Uttar Pradesh, 7-10-2000; (30) Muhammad Hussain, s/o Riaz, Burd Man Hughli, 4-1-2000; (31) Save Ram, s/o Dev Ram, Nawab Gharah Ghngha Nagar, 29-1-99; (32) Muhammad Ali s/o Karim Bux, Gopal nagar Kolkata, 10-3-99; (33) Khushi Mohammad, s/o Bashir, Nishat Colony PB, 19-6-99; (34) Seeta Ram, s/o Jagdesh Ja, Madar Ganj, Bhagalpur, 19-4-99; (35) Krishan Ram, s/o Pankaj Ram, Balnaga Behrampur, 12-9-99; (36) Dil Muhammad, s/o Gul Mohammad, Chmey Himat, Jammu, 30-8-99; (37) Pawan Kumar, s/o Dhri Dev Raj, Gharah Sadia Nagar, 11-5-99. Clashes, blasts leave 200 hurt in B’desh

Dhaka, July 7
Nearly 200 people were injured in clashes between bomb-throwing government and opposition supporters and by rubber bullets and tear gas fired by the police in northwestern Bangladesh, police and witnesses said on today.

The police broke up the rival political activists throwing stones and exploding home-made bombs at Rangpur, 350 km northwest of Dhaka, on Friday evening, Superintendent Fazlul Hoq Bhuiyan said.

Twenty policemen were among the wounded in the violence, he said.

Clashes erupted when activists of Opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party attempted to prevent a rally by supporters of the ruling Awami League. The BNP called for a half-day general strike at Rangpur on Sunday, a working day in this Muslim country.

Tension was running high in Rangpur as the rival groups prepared for a further showdown after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina hands over power to a caretaker authority this month. Reuters

India, USA natural allies: Vajpayee

Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee has said the Indo-US relations have entered a “promising era” of cooperation, which can be strengthened through “more intense economic and commercial exchanges”.

Bush’s daughter fined in alcohol case

Austin (Texas), July 7
Jenna Bush, one of the 19-year-old twin daughters of US President George W. Bush, has been fined $ 500 and her driving licence suspended in an alcohol-related case and has been sentenced to probation in another.

Jenna Bush was yesterday put on probation for using someone else’s identification to falsely show that she was old enough to buy an alcoholic drink. The legal age for alcohol drinkers in Texas is 21.

Austin Municipal Court Judge Kerrie Key assessed her 100 in court costs, asked her to perform 36 hours of community service and ordered her to attend a victim impact panel to learn about alcohol’s potential dangers.

Jenna Bush, who was not in court and was represented by lawyer William Allison, pleaded no contest to the May 31 incident in which she tried to use someone else’s identification to buy a margarita at an Austin restaurant, Chuy’s.

It was her second brush with the law in as many weeks.

In another case, Judge Elisabeth Earle fined her $ 500 and suspended her driving licence for 30 days for a May 16 incident in which she was caught drinking beer. Reuters

Charles doesn’t rule out Camilla tie

London, July 7
Britain’s Prince Charles, in an interview published today, for the first time left open the possibility that he may wed longtime lover Camilla Parker Bowles.

When asked by the British newspaper The Daily Mail whether he planned to remarry, he did not give his usual denial.

“Will I be alive tomorrow? Who knows, what the Good Lord has planned. You can’t be certain about anything. I don’t know,” he was quoted as saying in his first major interview in seven years.

“I just think it’s important, particularly as I get older, to think about the journey that’s coming next,” the 52-year-old prince said. Journalist Mary Riddell, who conducted the 70-minute interview, said Charles talked “honestly and movingly” of his hopes and the things that irked him.

“It doesn’t matter how much money or how many possessions you have. People can still be lonely or unhappy,” he said, recalling his lonely days at boarding school.

The interview was given last week, one day before he publicly kissed Camilla for the first time.

The kiss was heralded by royal watchers as a milestone in the couple’s relationship and underlined Prince Charles’ determination that Camilla be publicly accepted as his partner.

The couple have recently increased the frequency and profile of engagements they attend together.

Prince Charles also lamented the way the media is still obsessed with his late former wife, especially, after the recent passing of what would have been her 40th birthday.

“The truth is that the children mind about the way in which she is dealt with. It must be quite difficult for them. I wish people could let her soul rest in peace without all these constant reminders.” Reuters
