Kin seek compensation; ‘strike’ at hospital

Dr Ramesh Rani Thkural, a senior doctor at the local Civil Hospital, has been booked under Section 304-A, IPC for causing the death of Laxmi allegedly due to negligence while performing a tubectomy operation.

The Executive Engineer (Township) of the BBMB in an affidavit to the district administration has admitted that about 2 lakh sq feet of area of the board has been encroached upon in Ropar. This includes the 97,000 sq feet area encroached upon in the Nangal township area and rest near canal of other parts in the district.

Jathedar should resign: SHSAD

The Sarb Hind Shiromani Akali Dal (SHSAD) has demanded that Giani Kewal Singh, Jathedar, Takht Damdama Sahib, should resign on moral grounds in wake of the non-bailable warrant issued against him in connection with the death of his daughter-in-law.

A “Panthic Morcha” of five radical Akali Dals will be formed in a week. Mr Dhyan Singh Mand, senior vice-president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), disclosed this while talking to newsmen here yesterday. He said the SAD(A), the SHSAD, the SAD (Panthic) the SAD (Democratic) and the Sant Samaj had decided to come together to defeat Congress and ruling SAD-BJP combine.

BSM: ban recruitment of outsiders
Chandigarh, June 13
Mr Paramjit Singh Kainth, a senior leader of the Bahujan Samaj Morcha, said here today that the party had launched a drive to mobilise party workers for the Assembly elections in Punjab. He said political conferences had been held at Nabha, Shatrana, Dakala, Banur, Rajpura and in the Samana area of Patiala district in the first phase.

Residents block traffic for two hours

Surgeons asked to comply with SC orders

Man alleges cremated body not his son’s

The cremation of the body of an Army man, Rohota Singh, after about eight months of his under “abnormal” circumstances in the local cremation ground created a major controversy when Mr Rampal Singh, father of deceased, alleged the body cremated today by the Army personnel was not of his son.

No ‘dharmi fauji’ in jail: Kahlon

Brig Kuldeep Singh Kahlon, Director Sainik Welfare Department, Punjab, said in a statement that there was no “dharmi fauji” in jail at present as per the information available. However, if any one had information about any such “fauji” in the jail, he should send an application to the department for necessary action.

BKU (Ekta) men gherao bank
Bathinda, June 13
Activists of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta) gheraoed the local branch of the Bathinda Primary Co-op Agriculture Development Bank today and raised slogans against the government and the bank management. They were protesting against the issuance of notices to farmers who had not repayed the loans taken from the bank.

Stamp duty on farm loans to go
Chandigarh, June 13
The Punjab Government has decided to abolish stamp duty and registration fee on the value of land mortgaged to secure loans for agriculture and allied activities. A notification in this regard will be issued next week, said Mr Sewa Singh Sekhwan, Revenue Minister.

4 IAS officers shifted

The Punjab Government today issued the transfer orders of four IAS officers. Mr V.K. Singh, awaiting posting, goes as Project Director of the Punjab State AIDS Control Society and ex-officio Secretary, Health, against a vacant post while Mr Bidhi Chand Thakur, Special Secretary, Department of Power, will become Special Secretary, Freedom Fighters, vice Mr Karam Singh.

Cops urged to be responsive: DIG
Jalandhar, June 13
To reduce the crime rate in urban areas the Punjab police will lay more emphasis on urban policing. Stating this at a press conference here today, Mr C.S.R Reddy, who has taken over as DIG (Jalandhar range), said it had been decided that more attention would be paid to these areas. 

BSNL to provide mobile phones in Fazilka
Fazilka, June 13
G.S. Julka, General Manager, Telecom Division, Ferozepore said today that Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd would provide mobile telephone service in the Fazilka area by December. Besides this, the inter-state digital network video phones service would also be provided to the consumers during the next two months.

Samarjit Singh, a lecturer at Government Senior Secondary School, Tur, was allegedly murdered by his relatives on Monday at Lalpur village over a land dispute.

Unemployed teachers hold meetings
Bathinda, June 13
A meeting of the members of Unemployed ETT Teachers Union was held at Deon village in the district today in which it was decided to urge the government to fulfil their demands or they would start a fast unto death at Chandigarh from June 20.

Exam time changed
Amritsar, June 13
The time of the entrance test for admission to M.Sc. (Mathematics) Part-I for the session 2001-2002, scheduled to be held on June 27 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., has been changed from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. by Guru Nanak Dev University, said Dr Satvir Singh, Dean, Academic Affairs.

Punjab to recruit 7,200 teachers

Decks have been cleared for recruiting teachers in the government schools of the state after litigation in this connection in the court came to an end.
