Two die as well caves in
Rescuers bring out the body of a person who was buried in a cave-in at Dullo Kalan village, near Ludhiana, on Sunday. Dullo Kalan (Ludhiana), June 10
Two persons were buried alive when a wall of a well caved in while they were digging a tubewell in this village, 25 km from here today. While one body was retrieved in the afternoon after a massive rescue operation launched by the police, district administration and the villagers, the second body could be found only late in the evening.

Track electrification project a non-starter
Ludhiana, June 10
Almost three months after the much-needed Ludhiana-Amritsar rail electrification project was inaugurated, the plan remains a still born, thanks to the shortage of funds with the Central Government and effective political pressure by other states which ensured that similar projects in their states were taken up on priority basis by the Central Government.

Villagers getting contaminated water supply

There is a grave threat to the lives of villagers living in the neighbourhood of the city due to reported contamination of drinking water with pesticides and weedicides sprayed in the waterlogged paddy fields.

Setback to SAD (A)

The SAD(A) here today got a setback in its own home district, when a large number of party workers and leaders led by Mr Mohan Singh Makaronpur, vice-chairman Zila Parishad Fatehgarh Sahib and member working committee SAD(A), resigned from the primary membership of the party. 

6 SDMs in four years
Machhiwara, June 10
As Many as six SDMs have been transferred from Samrala subdivision during the past four years as a result of alleged interference by local politicians. Mr Rajinder Singh, who joined as SDM on January 3, 1997, was transferred on March 19, 1997. After that, Mr S.K. Sharma took the charge as SDM of Samrala. He was transferred on May 18, 1997.

SJP launches awareness drive against WTO

The Punjab unit of the Samajwadi Janata Party has launched an awareness drive against the economic policies of the BJP at the Centre and the Akali Dal led coalition government in the state. 

‘Restrictions on Amarnath pilgrims should go’
Ludhiana, June 10
Shri Amarnath Yatra Welfare Board, a national organisation of 74 NGOs that hold community kitchens from Jammu to the Amarnath cave, has opposed the restrictions that have recently been imposed by the Jammu and Kashmir Government on pilgrimage to the holy cave.

Shiv Sena seeks ban on lotteries, liquor

The state unit of the Shiv Sena (Bal Thackeray) today warned the Punjab government that if it did not impose a ban on lotteries and curb the use of intoxicants in the state, the sena would launch a campaign.

Third day without power
Ludhiana, June 10
The power supply to Durga Puri in Haibowal here is down for the past three days due to a snag in a transformer in the area. About 400 persons have been affected by it.

Man with opium capsules held
Ludhiana, June 10
A man smuggling opium into the city by storing it in empty capsules, hidden in the dickey of his scooter, was caught by the Sarabha Nagar police from a police check post here today afternoon.

240 kg of poppy husk seized
Jagraon, June 10
Mr Arvinder Singh, SHO, Sidhwan Bet police station, arrested Pritam Kaur, wife of Sadhu Singh, a resident of Lopo village, and seized 240 kg of poppy husk which was concealed in pipes in a drain at Rasulpur. A case under Sections 15, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered.

Despite past year’s paddy glut, some of the farmers have planted the paddy early this year, overlooking the dangers of another glut due to non-procurement, as this paddy, too, is expected to have a huge moisture content.

The government should not only get the paddy lifted from the ‘mandis’, but also get it milled soon. It should ensure that there is enough space for storing the rice and a smooth movement of the produce from Punjab to the other states.

Farmers to hold dharna today
Amloh, June 10
The Bharti Kisan Union will hold dharna on Monday in front of the Punjab State Electricity Board office at Patiala, to protest against the anti-farmer polices of the board, said Mr Baldev Singh Mianpur, president of the BKU, here today.

Atlases fail to keep up with global changes

Going by various atlases being provided to the students by many local schools, the Union Of Soviet Socialist Republic(USSR), still exists and countries like Kazakistan, Uzbekistan and many others from the former union exist nowhere in these atlases and Czechoslovakia continues to be a single entity instead of two different countries, the Czech and Slovakia republics.

53 Lok Adalats to be held in Punjab
Ludhiana , June 10
The Punjab Legal Services Authority has decided to hold 53 Lok Adalats during the next quarter starting from July, throughout in state, for providing speedy justice to the litigants and for minimising the load of over-burdened courts, at all the district headquarters and sub-divisions.

Painting exhibition on female foeticide
Ludhiana, June 10
To mark the 100th anniversary of artist Sobha Singh, a painting exhibition titled ‘creative moments’ was organised by the Chand School of Arts at the Sutlej Club here today. The exhibition was based on the theme ‘female foeticide’ and carried a message to stop the merciless killing of unborn female child.

Illegal structures removed

On the directions of the Deputy Commissioner, Fatehgarh Sahib, the Municipal Council, Sirhind, has launched a campaign to remove the encroachments in Sirhind town and in Fatehgarh Sahib adjoining the district administrative complex. A team of municipal employees, headed by Mr Amarbir Singh Sidhu, GA to Deputy Commissioner and Mr Charanjit Singh, Executive Officer, entered the main bazar of Sirhind town and took away the articles which were displayed in the bazar.
