Illegal structures removed
Surinder Bhardwaj

Fatehgarh Sahib, June 10
On the directions of the Deputy Commissioner, Fatehgarh Sahib, the Municipal Council, Sirhind, has launched a campaign to remove the encroachments in Sirhind town and in Fatehgarh Sahib adjoining the district administrative complex. A team of municipal employees, headed by Mr Amarbir Singh Sidhu, GA to Deputy Commissioner and Mr Charanjit Singh, Executive Officer, entered the main bazar of Sirhind town and took away the articles which were displayed in the bazar. The team also demolished the concrete structures around the gurdwara and district administrative complex at Fatehgarh Sahib.

In the afternoon when the municipal staff again entered the main bazar to remove the encroachments, they had to face the wrath of the shopkeepers and the car of Mr Sidhu and Mr Charanjit Singh was detained by the shopkeepers led by Surjit Singh Sahi, district president, Beopar Mandal. They protested the lifting of benches of a rehri owner. When Surjit Singh protested that this was not an encroachment the EO threatened him to prosecute. Surjit Singh and other shopkeepers gave the call to gherao the car, which continued for half an hour and slogans were raised against the council. It was only after that the EO tendered an apology, the gherao was lifted.

Mr Surjit Singh told Ludhiana Tribune that they were not against the removal of encroachments, but the selective demolitions angered the public. It is worth mentioning that the main bazar of Sirhind town had been narrowed due to encroachments by the shopkeepers themselves much to the comfort of customers and passers-by. The shopkeepers were not satisfied with the space they got inside their shops and they display goods outside the shop covering at least up to five feet of road on either side. It resulted in traffic jam and crowd in the market. The hapless pedestrians had to suffer. Several citizens and organisations have been demanding removal of the encroachments. Mr Amarbir Singh Sidhu told that this unfortunate incident occurred due to misunderstanding and the drive against the encroachments would continue.
