Ludhiana, June 5
Dr Dinesh Trehan was unanimously nominated chairman of the Legal Cell of district unit of Indian Medical Association (IMA). The decision was taken at a meeting of executive members of IMA at Lodhi club here today.

Dr Gursharan Singh, president of the local unit of IMA, in a press statement said that various burning issues concerning the medical fraternity were discussed in the meeting. He said the formation of the legal cell had become important in the wake of filing of a case by a marriage palace-owner on IMA land against IMA Ludhiana. The president said that Dr Trehan had been authorised to form a committee and resolved that he and his team would manage the affairs of IMA, relieving Dr Romesh Gupta, who had been managing the legal affairs of the IMA till now.

IMA requested all its members to contribute liberally towards the IMA legal cell to strengthen the cell in foiling the attempts of the people who were planning to grab the land.

The executive also discussed the proposed bill for Nursing Home Registration, which was opposed by every member. All the members said that the Government, with a budget of crores of rupees, did not intend to cover its own institutes under the proposed bill but was targetting nursing homes. They alleged that many sections of the bill were undemocratic and impractical as they interfered with the rights of the patients.

The members said that doctors were governed by Medical Council of India (MCI) that registered them for practicing medicine in any part of the country. The members said that there no authority had any right to interfere in the service of medicos. The executive also authorised the local president to be in touch with other associations like Indian Dental Association, AIIMS and homeopaths to fight the “new menace unleashed by the Badal Government”.

In wake of the growing number of incidents of violence against doctors, as had recently been witnessed in Jalandhar, the IMA also plans to form a committee to prevent assault on doctors.

Dr Gursharan Singh, appealed to the medical fraternity to become members of IMA to fight against the ‘unlawful’ proposed bill.
