Paramedical staff donates blood
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, June 1
To motivate masses to donate blood for the thalassemic children, 200 paramedical staff members of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital and Hero DMC Heart Institute donated 200 units of blood during a voluntary blood donation camp organised by the Department of Blood Transfusion Medicine for the welfare of thalassemic children here today.

Dr G.S. Wander, chief cardiologist, Hero DMC Heart Institute, inaugurated the camp. Dr Amarjeet, Reader in Department of Pathology delivered the welcome address.

“In a series of similar camps held last year and this year, around 200 doctors, medical students and paramedical staff of the DMCH and other city hospitals donated blood. The initiative in this direction generated a wide response and served as an impetus for many voluntary organisations to come forward for the aid of thalassemic children,” told Dr Amarjeet, in charge of Department of Blood Transfusion of the DMCH.

“The DMCH has been working incessantly by joining hands with the Punjab Thalassemics Welfare Society. One unit of blood normally costs Rs 800 but the DMCH is helping out these patients by providing blood at very nominal rate of Rs 300 with the help of the district Red Cross society,” said Dr Praveen Sobti.

Roadways employees’ ultimatum
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, June 1
The Punjab Roadways Conductors Union, Ludhiana, has saved a 15-day ultimatum on the management to accept its demands or be prepared for a decisive protest movement of the employees.

The General Manager of Ludhiana depot of Punjab Roadways was criticised for his partisan attitude, irregularities in day-to-day functioning and weakening the union for his own vested interests.

Releasing the proceedings of the meeting, Mr Rajinder Singh Lalton, state General Secretary of the union, said: “The meeting has unanimously decided to present a memorandum to the General Manager of Ludhiana depot. Copies of the memorandum have been sent to the Transport Secretary, Punjab, the Labour Commissioner, Punjab, and the Deputy Commissioner, Ludhiana.”

The union has demanded implementation of the seniority list of conductors and annual promotions without any discrimination, provision of basic infrastructure, advance loans and arrears to all the staff. It also demanded that the management should not reject the leave applications of the staff in case there was adequate leave in their account.

Mr Gurcharan Singh said, “The appreciation certificates should be given only to the deserving candidates. The complaints against the conductors should be acted upon in a specific time period. They should not be asked to do extra duty against the rules.”
