GRANT: The Minister of Social Securities and Development of Women and Children, Mr Gobind Singh Kanjla, announced a grant of Rs 1 lakh to the Institute of Blind, here on Wednesday. Mr Kanjla said the Punjab Government was committed to help rehabilitate the handicapped. He also inaugurated a free eye operation camp.

BARNALA
STRIKE OBSERVED: Work in various courts of the town was hit on Wednesday as lawyers observed a strike to express solidarity with the agitating lawyers of Sangrur. Following the May 18 lathi charge by the police, the Sangrur Bar Association had given a call for a state-level strike on May 30 to protest against “excesses” by the administration.

FARIDKOT
CRITICISED: United Communist Party of India president Sukhinder Singh Dhaliwal on Wednesday accused the Vice-Chancellor of Punjabi University, Patiala, of gagging the democratic rights of two professors by serving them with show-cause notices for criticising the ‘‘sangat darshan’’ programme of the Chief Minister.

SEIZED: Mr Mohan Singh, ASI, in charge of the police post, Hathur, arrested Tarsem Singh of Lakha village and recovered 21.5 kg of poppy husk from his possession. The police has registered a case against the accused under Sections 15,61 and 85 of the NDPS Act.

JALANDHAR

WATER SCARCITY: Residents of the local Master Tara Singh Nagar and its adjoining areas were facing an acute shortage of drinking water for the past two months. The diversion of water supply to the residence of the municipal town planner had resulted in this shortage and the repeated requests to the municipal corporation authorities had not borne any result, alleged Mr Naresh Thatai, general secretary of the Master Tara Singh Nagar Welfare Society on Wednesday.

KHANNA
EXEMPTED: The Khanna Municipal Council has decided that the owners of the houses below 150 yards will be exempted from charges of sewerage and drinking water. The exemption is only for the non-income tax payers. The decision regarding this has been passed unanimously at a meeting of the MC, Khanna, held under the presidentship of Mr Onkar Rai Mehta, President MC, Khanna, on Thursday. A proposal regarding this will be sent to the Punjab Government for approval. It has also been passed at the meeting that about five acre land in Galwaddi village will be taken on lease for disposal of sewerage water.

HELD: The Khanna police has arrested a person under the Gambling Act. He is identified as Narinder Kumar and 510 have been recovered Rs 510 from him. A case has been registered under the Gambling Act.

LUDHIANA
DISTRIBUTED: The Smt Murti Devi Charitable Society distributed free copies, pencils, slates and chalks to children of Sant Baba Isher Singh Colony, Kaonke Kalan, at a function held here on Thursday. Mr Harsurinder Singh Gill, member, Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee, donated three ceiling fans to the school.

SUN TV: The Punjab Tamil Sangam has demanded the telecast of Sun TV in Punjab. In a representation to the Siti Cable, the sangam has expressed its displeasure with stopping of the telecast of the channel for last some time. According to Mr P.M. Sundar Raj, joint secretary of the sangam, there are about 3,000 Tamils living in Ludhiana alone. While Sun TV was telecast till recently, however, its telecast has been stopped for last one week, much to the disappointment of the Tamil population. The sangam has urged the Siti Cable management to resume the telecast of the channel as it helps the Tamil population to watch the programmes in their mother tongue and also keep the link with their culture alive.

NO GRANT: It sounds hard to believe but it is true that till date no development grant has been provided to panchayat of Harkishan Vihar, located on the periphery of the city. According to Mr Girdhari Lal, sarpanch, the panchayat came into being in 1998, when the panchayat of Meharban village, which was common to many villages, was divided into three separate entities. Mr Girdhari Lal lamented that in the absence of development grants from the government, the village population was denied civic amenities like water supply and repeated pleas made to the district officials had failed to evoke any response so far.

SUSPENDED: The Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Dr S.S. Sandhu, has placed under suspension Mr Jasbir Singh, a clerk in the Octroi Department, for complaints of causing financial loss to the department by charging less octroi. Dr Sandhu has warned the MC employees to perform their duty honestly, otherwise strict action will be taken against them.

CAMP: Bhai Ghanaya Ji Sewa Sanstha, Haibowal, organised a free dental check-up and blood group testing camp in Sarinh village in Jalandhar district. According to Mr Shamsher Singh Sekhon, president of the sanstha, a team of doctors, headed by Dr Jasbir Singh Kharbanda examined more than 222 persons for dental diseases. Defective teeth of about 50 patients were extracted while another 30 received fillings. Another 210 persons got their blood group tested and were provided with blood group cards.

RED CARDS: Under directions from the state government, the district administration has decided to issue new red cards to riot victims, who had arrived in Punjab before the stipulated date (November 15, 1985), but could not get themselves registered in the office of the Deputy Commissioner by February 1986. According to Ms Anita Darshi, Assistant Commissioner (Complaints), the riot victims, who have already submitted their applications, should contact the RRA branch in the office of Deputy Commissioner, along with a copy of their ration card, affidavit and migration certificate, as proof, within one week. No further applications after this date will be entertained, she added.

MACHHIWARA
NOMINATED: Jagjeewan Ram Kisan Purskaar Awardee Mr Darshan Singh Tabiba, a progressive farmer of nearby Hiyatpura village, has been nominated as the member of the National Steering Committee on National Agricultural Technology Project (NATP) of the ICAR by Union Agricultural Minister.

OFFICE-BEARERS: A deputation comprising of all safai karamcharis of nagar panchayat, Machhiwara, met the executive officer Mr Balwinder Singh regarding their demands. The deputation was headed by Mr Raj Kumar Gill, vice-president of the Punjab Safai Karamchari Union. The EO assured them for considering their demands sympathetically. After that the local unit of the union was set up. The office-bearers of this unit include: Mr Prem Sagar — president; Bimla Devi — senior vice-president; Anubala — vice-president; Roshan Lal Hans — general secretary; Hem Raj —secretary; and Nand Lal — cashier.

MEETING: A meeting of the Lok Bhalai Party’s local unit was held under the chairmanship of Mr Paramjit Singh Sidhwan, national general secretary of the party, at Gurdwara Charan Kanwal Sahib, Machhiwara, on Wednesday. The meeting was called to reinstate the local unit which was dissolved some days ago. Mr Sidhwan directed Dr Daljit Singh Dhanda, former president of the local unit, to send the list of office-bearers to the party office. In his brief address, Mr Sidhwan said their party would not go for alliance with the Congress and the Shiromani Akali Dal. The party would field 90 candidates in forthcoming assembly elections, he added.

TRANSFERRED: According to Mr Sushil Kumar, DSP, Samrala, the in charge of police post, Behlolpur village, of the police station, Machhiwara, has been transferred to the police station, Samrala. Mr Haqam Singh, ASI, has taken over as in charge of the Behlolpur police post.

CONDOLED: A monthly meeting of the Sahitya Sabha, Machhiwara, was held at local Government Senior Secondary School under the presidentship of Mr Gurdial Dalal on Wednesday. According to press secretary Mr Niranjan Sookham, the members, expressed deep sorrow over the demise of Punjabi writer Piara Singh Padam and English writer R.K. Narayan.

MALERKOTLA
SANITATION PROBLEM: Freedom fighters and senior citizens here submitted a letter to the Deputy Commissioner on Wednesday and apprised him of the appalling state of sanitation near educational institutions, hospital, court, bus stand and parks, etc. Mr Jeet Singh, a senior citizen, said they had brought the matter to the notice of the municipal authorities but to no avail.

MANSA
ROOF COLLAPSE: The Death toll in the Budhlada tragedy mounted to three when six-year-old Beant Kaur, a student of Arjun Model School, died in the Civil Hospital here on Wednesday. Earlier, two students were killed and five injured when the roof of a classroom collapsed.

ONE KILLED: Harpal Singh, a junior accountant in Mansa Central Cooperative Bank Limited, was crushed to death by a truck. He was going on a scooter from Sardulgarh to Jattana Kalan village on Friday.

MURDERED: Akbar Khan, alias Tara (19), a resident of Khiwan Kalan village, was reportedly killed by unidentified persons on Wednesday. The deceased was on his way to fields when he was attacked.

MOGA
AIDS CAMPS: The Health Department has decided to organise 20 AIDS awareness camps in the district in June. This was stated here on Wednesday by the Civil Surgeon, Dr Prem Bansal. Officials of the department would acquaint people with the measures to prevent the disease, he added.

SANGAT DARSHAN: A sangat darshan programme will be held at the office of the Deputy Commissioner on Friday to review the developmental work and redress the grievances of the villagers. This was started by the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Kanwal Bir Singh Sidhu, here on Wednesday.

NAWANSHAHR
DOCUMENTARY: The shooting of “Punjab di Poonam” — a documentary drama dedicated to the literacy mission, started at Phul Makauri village on Wednesday. Mr Manjit Singh, director of the film, said it would be a two-hour movie to spread the message of literacy.

DUPED: The local police has arrested Surjit Kaur of Islamabad, Hoshiarpur, for duping Gian Chand of Mahil Gahilan village in Nawanshahr of Rs 40,000 on the pretext of helping him to get his money refunded from a travel agent, Ravinder Bagga of Ludhiana, who had promised to send his nephew abroad.

MEETING: Dr Joginder Singh, Director, Health Services and Family Welfare, addressing a meeting of health officials at the Civil Surgeon’s office here on Wednesday said the state unit of the National Population Commission would hold a meeting on June 16 to draw a comprehensive plan to create awareness among the masses regarding family planning.

PATHANKOT
ARRESTED: The Sadar police on Wednesday arrested Rajesh Singh of the Kandwal barrier at Bhimpur rest house and allegedly seized a revolver and two cartridges from him. A case under Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act has been registered.

HANDWRITING: A handwriting competition was held by the Ramanujan Academy of Mathematics here on Tuesday. More than 50 students participated in the trilingual competition. In Punjabi the first three positions went to Shikha, Jatinder and Nishu, in Hindi Priyanka, Shagun and Kamini won the first three positions in English Shajun, Vishal and Tanupriya got the first three positions.

PATIALA
CAMP: A Personality Development camp was organised by the Bharat Vikas Parishad here on Monday. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister for Information, Mr Sat Pal Saini, emphasised the need for the students to inculcate Indian thoughts. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Kashmiri Lal, Assistant Punjab State Parcharak encouraged the children participating in the camp and said, “The character of a person is mirrored by his behaviour rather than his clothes. The project in-charge, Mr Subhas Dhamija said 100 children, including 48 girls, participated in the camp. He added that stress was laid on games, yoga and other social activities. Mr Saini donated Rs 31,000 to the parishad.

FAST: The indefinite fast by members of the PRTC Workers Action Committee entered its sixth day on Tuesday. Members said if their demands were not met by the management then a massive rally will be held on June 4 in front of the PRTC head office.

COMPETITION: The State Bank of Patiala organised essay writing and poetry recitation competition at Government Primary School, Jalal Khera, on Tuesday. The function was attended by the bank officials and village panchayat. The bank also organised various other community services for the weaker sections of society. The activities comprise medical check-up camps, adult literacy camps, veterinary camps and special programmes for school children.

BOOK RELEASED: The Minister for Social Welfare, Woman and Child Development, Mr Gobind Singh Kanjala, released a book ‘Comparative Linguistics’ by the State Language Department here on Thursday Mr Kanjala was attending a Literary Meet organised for Dr Krishna Kalsia, renowned Punjabi writer. Mr Kanjala assured that more financial assistance will be given to the department by the government for the publication of pending books. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Kirpal Singh Badungar, Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to Chief Minister, the government will provide financial assistance required by the State Language Department for the publication of various hand-written scripts. He also released the 550 hand-written books recently published by the Reference Library of the Language Department.

PENSIONERS’ WELFARE: Water-coolers, chairs and fans worth Rs 50,000 have been installed for the pensioners. This was stated by Mr Manjit Singh Narang, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), on behalf of the Punjab Pensioners Welfare Association while addressing the pensioners at the Treasury Office here on Thursday. Mr Narang inaugurated the shed installed by the District Parishad for the welfare of the pensioners. Other members who were present on the occasion were Mr H.S. Sodhi, president, Punjab Pensioners Welfare Association, Mr B.S. Gautam, senior vice-president and Mr O.P. Grewal, secretary.

CULTURAL WORKSHOP: The Devinder Cultural Centre for Children, Sular, will be organising workshops for the children from slums. The workshop will be organised at Daru Kuta Basti. The painting workshop will be organised from June 1 to 15 while a Theatre-cum-Cultural workshop will be organised from June 16 to 30. According to Dr Ravi Bhushan, Executive Secretary of the Cultural Centre for Children, the Purpose of the workshop is to provide opportunity and exposure to the poor children who normally are deprived of such facilities. Ms Praneet of Government College of Girls, Ms Neetu and Ms Sukhraj of Punjabi University, Patiala ,will guide the participating children during the painting competition. Mr Sudhir Kumar and Mr Satvinderjit will assist the children in theatre workshop.

PHILLAUR
2 KILLED: A boy was run over by a train and killed on the Phillaur-Noormahal rail section on Wednesday. In another incident a labourer was drowned in a canal near Barrapind village on Wednesday.

SUICIDE: Sanjeev Kumar committed suicide by allegedly consuming some poison in his home at Shahkot on Wednesday following a quarrel.

MEETING HELD: A police-public meeting was held at Apra village on Thursday where Mr Ashok Baath, DSP, appealed to the villagers to remain vigilant and organise “theekri pehras” in villages. He also heard their complaints.

ROPAR
BANNED: The Deputy Commissioner, Ropar, Mr G S Grewal, here on Wednesday banned bathing in canals and rivers in the district under Section 144, Cr PC. The orders were passed in view of the drowning of three kids in the Sirhind canal.

SAHNEWAL
GRANT: A cheque for Rs 80,000 was granted to sarpanch Paramjit Singh Gill for the Dalits at Jandiali village by Mr Santa Singh Umaidpuri, Chairman, Market Committee, Sahnewal. Babu Jagroop Singh, circle president, and Mr Malkit Singh Gill, vice-president, were also present on the occasion. Mr Umaidpuri said the cheque has been granted for the upliftment of the poor and the downtrodden of the village.

TRAINING CAMP: The Red Cross Society, Ludhiana, organised a first-aid and home nursing training camp at Government Girls High School, Ramgarh. According to the headmistress, Ms Malkit Kaur, 79 students were accorded training for a week in which students of Classes VII, VIII and IX participated.

SAMMELAN: A sant sammelan was organised at Gurdwara Dhakki Sahib, Khasi Kalan. Sant Baba Joginder Singh, Baba Sona Singh, Baba Jag Mithiya Singh, Baba Bhagat Singh’s Sant Sewak Jatha collaborted to organise the sammelan. After the bhog of Shri Akhand Path, Baba Gurdial Singh Tande Wale, Baba Amrik Singh Panch Bhainian, Baba Gurmail Singh Rampur, Baba Randhir Singh Bhanglan, Baba Sarbjit Singh Ahmedgarh and Baba Nihal Singh Halware Wale, expressed their views to the sangat.

ARRESTED: The Sunam police has arrested two members of a gang of car thieves, who also used to prepare fake registration papers of vehicles. The SSP, Sangrur, said Chamkaur Singh of Rajpura and Balwinder Singh of Patiala were arrested during a special drive. A case has been registered.

DONATED: Canara Bank employees, Chandigarh branch, donated school uniforms and sweets among students of Government High School, Sector 24, here on Wednesday. The Deputy General Manager, Mr M.V. Balasubramanian, presided over the function. The Assistant General Manager, Mr R.K. Arora, and other staff members were also present on the occasion. STRIKE: On a call of the Punjab and Haryana Court Bar Associations and the Bar Council, the District Bar Association observed strike here on Wednesday. The president of the bar Association, Mr H.S. Hundal, condemned the lathi-charge on lawyers of the Sangrur Bar Association.

DHARNA: More than hundred members of the Ram Darbar Sudhar Sabha staged a dharna at Matka Chowk, here on Tuesday. They were protesting against the indifferent attitude of the Chandigarh Administration towards their demands. They submitted a memorandum to the Administration.

KHARAR
AWARENESS RALLY: The district traffic police organised a traffic rules awareness rally here on Wednesday. A large number of schoolchildren participated in the rally which was flagged off by Mr Ranbir Singh, president, Municipal Committee, Kharar. It was organised under the supervision of Mr V.K. Vaid, Inspector, Traffic.

LEAGUE’S PLEA: The Indian Ex-Services League, Punjab and Chandigarh, Ropar district, has demanded that all ranks should be permitted to purchase scooter car from CSD canteen. In a press note issued here on Thursday, Hony Capt Dharm Pal, President, Ropar Unit, said the league had written to the higher authorities in this regard. He said at present junior commissioned officers and other ranks were not allowed to purchase.

DEPUTATION: A deputation of the Berozgar Adhiyapak Front, Punjab, met the Punjab Education Minister, Mr Tota Singh, at Punjab School Education Board, here on Wednesday. According to a press note of the front, the minister assured them that JBT teachers recruitment would be made according to the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

AMBALA
OPIUM SEIZED: A team of the Special Task Force, led by SI Devendra Singh, seized 2 kg of opium from a man on Tuesday. Acting on a tip-off, the team stopped Shish Pal in Ambala Cantt and opium was seized from him. A case has been registered.

CBI RAID: The CBI raided the office and residences of an estate officer of the Punjab Wakf Board on Wednesday. A CBI team went to the headquarters of the board located in Ambala Cantt and sought certain files concerning the estate officer. The team is believed to be looking into alleged assets disproportionate to known sources of income. The Chief Executive Officer of the board, Sahibzada Akhlaq Ahmed Khan, categorically stated that the raid had got nothing to do with the functioning of the board. “The CBI raided the residences of an estate officer in Ambala as well as Malerkotla. They asked for certain documents in the office, which were handed over to them,” he said.

RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP: Dr V.K. Malhotra of GMN College, Ambala Cantt, has gone to Denmark to conduct a peace research project titled “Military restructuring in South Asia: Problems and prospects.” In a letter from Copenhagen, Denmark, Dr Malhotra writes “Copenhagen Peace Research Institute has again given me the guest research fellowship to complete the project”.

WORKSHOP: A writing workshop will be organised at Solan from June 3 to 6 by the Kahani Lekhan Mahavidyalaya. A press note said the workshop would be inaugurated by the Himachal Pradesh Governor, Mr Suraj Bhan. A number of experts will be addressing the workshop.

WELFARE SCHEMES: Nearly 585 backward class persons have benefited from Rs 132.32 lakh spent by the Haryana Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Finance and Development Nigam. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr D.D. Gautam, said a number of welfare schemes were being run by the nigam for the social and economic upliftment of the backward classes. He said the loan facilities were extended for those persons from backward classes living below the poverty line.

COMPUTER-BASED ROBOT: Four final year students of electronics and communication engineering from MM Engineering College, Mullana, have made a user-friendly computer-based robot. The robot, made by Lalit Bansal, Manish Jain, Pardeep Bharti and Vikas, can be operated in two modes — manually through the keyboard and automatically by giving commands to the computer. Built at a cost of Rs 10,000 and weighing about 6 kg, the robot took two months to be completed. The robot can move around in a room of 10 feet by 10 feet. It can rotate its arm up to 360 degrees in both direction. The robot will be beneficial to industries where the products are difficult to handle manually.

HONEST GIRL: An honest girl of Ambala, who had found a wad of notes lying at the Chandigarh railway station, deposited the money with a railway official. Kanupriya Sharma, a student of Convent of Jesus and Mary, was at the platform No 1 on Tuesday when she found it lying underneath a bench. The amount was about Rs 1,500. Later, her father, Mr Ashok Sharma, who is a railway official, was informed that the money belonged to a Kalka resident, Mr K.P. Singh.

STUDENTS HONOURED: The Ambala Junior Chamber, under the leadership of its president, Mr Sanjay Mittal, presented awards to 36 students of different schools at a function held at Aggarwal Dharamshala, Ambala Cantt. These students had stood first in annual examination of session 2000-2001. Anchors of the programme “Awards to brilliant students” were Hemant Batra and Ravi Sharma. The Indian Junior chamber has decided to construct 1000 cottages of 100 sq feet area each in Gujarat in aid of earthquake victims. The Ambala Junior Chamber has decided to construct one cottage at Gujarat.

NARNAUL
LPG LEAKAGE: A fire broke out in a house, owing to leakage in a LPG gas cylinder, in Bans mohalla at Mahendragarh, 25 km from here, on Tuesday. However, residents managed to douse the flames. A youth, who was injured while saving a girl, was rushed to hospital.

REWARI
WITNESSES INTIMIDATED: Mr Virender Singh of Jaunawas village has complained to the Inspector-General of Police, Gurgaon, that the accused who had molested his wife were intimidating the witnesses in the case. He sought action against them.

STONE LAID: Mr Om Prakash Chautala laid the foundation stone of Rs 1-crore water supply augmentation scheme at Mandhia Khurd village, 12 km from here, on Tuesday. The project, which would be completed next year, would benefit over 7,000 residents of Haluhara, Beharipur, Dhokia, Bodia Kamalpur, Mandhia Khurd and Rasooli villages.

SONEPAT
BODIES FOUND: The Government Railway Police found the bodies of a man (25) and a girl (23) on the railway track near the Ganaur railway station, about 17 km from here, on Wednesday.

PROCESSION: The district unit of the Brick-Kiln Mazdoor Vikas Sangh has decided to hold a march on June 3 in connection with their demands of enhanced labour charges and enforcement of labour laws. Mr Ram Diya Ratewal, President of the sangh, stated this here on Thursday.

HYDRO-POWER PROJECTS: The government has decided to allow cooperative sector to enter into construction of mini and small hydro-power projects in the state. A state-level committee of experts has been formed in this regard. This was stated by the Himachal Cooperatives and Information and Public Relations Minister of State, Mr Rikhiram Kondal, while inaugurating a sub-depot of essential commodities at Kapahada, 45 km from here, on Tuesday.

APPOINTED: Ms Rattni Devi has been appointed district mahila organiser, while Mr Daya Ram and Mr Raj Kumar Sharma have been appointed district organisers of the Congress Seva Dal of Para district. Mr Rashid Ahmed and Mr Santosh Kumar have also been appointed organising secretary and chief organiser, respectively, of the Bilaspur block of the Dal.

GRAMIN BANK: The Himachal Gramin Bank Officers’ Association took a serious note of the statements made by the vice-president of the All-India Punjab National Bank Staff Union, regarding involvement of leaders of the leftists union in the transfers of employees and officers of the bank. This was stated in a press note issued here on Wednesday by Mr Narender Sharma, general secretary of the association.

NAHAN
FIRE: Raw material worth lakh of rupees was damaged when a fire broke out in the store of a factory situated on the Kala Amb-Trilokpur road, 21 km from here, on Tuesday. Fire tenders from Nahan and Narayangarh took two hours to put the fire out. The cause of the fire was not known. Kala Amb police has registered a case.

NURPUR
BEATEN UP: Darshan Singh and Sham Lal, driver and conductor, respectively, of an HRTC bus were beaten up by their counterparts of a private bus at Jassur on Wednesday following an altercation over the alleged violation of timetable by the private bus. A case has been registered under Sections 353, 332 and 341 of the IPC.

INFLATED BILLS: Consumers of urban areas here are irked over the inflated bills. Rupees 30 has been included in the got power bills as additional meter inspection fee, while water bills include the revised water tariff. Moreover, telephone subscribers also received bills with five months’ advance rent charges worth Rs 600.

SHIMLA
URGED: The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) unit of Totu has urged the municipal corporation to fulfil their long-standing demands. They urged the authority to open the public toilet which was constructed a long time back. Mr Pawan Kumar, president, said people were facing various problems and urged the authority to provide street lights and sewerage line to the area.

BRIBERY CASE: The Vigilance Department caught a patwari, Mr Ram Asra of Chamba Patwar Circle, under Nalagarh tehsil, while accepting a bribe of Rs 500. He was arrested on Tuesday by a police party headed by Mr Hari Chand, Deputy Superintendent of Police of the anti-corruption zone, Solan.

ADEQUATE WATER: The president of the Himachal Pradesh Hotel & Restaurants Association, Mr Mohinder Kumar Seth, claimed that there was no water-shortage in Shimla hotels and that most of the hoteliers of the area were augmenting the water-supply by ferrying it to facilitate the running water supply in their hotels. The municipal corporation was also supplying water regularly because of the rise in water-levels in its reservoirs.
