HC stays SAS Nagar expansion
Next hearing fixed for July 2
Chandigarh, May 31
Acting on a petition filed by 61 Sohana village residents alleging disregard of the stay orders by the Punjab Urban Development Authority in SAS Nagar extension case, a Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court today directed that “all further proceedings regarding the acquisition of land shall remain stayed”.

Jagannath Kaushal cremated
Chandigarh, May 31
Former Law Minister and veteran Congress leader Jagannath Kaushal died here early this morning following a prolonged illness. He was 86. Kaushal, who is survived by his wife, two sons, and six daughters, was admitted to a local private hospital about three weeks back as he had reportedly developed a clot in the brain.

Lioness dies in Chhat Bir zoo
Chhat Bir, May 31
Death of a lioness after the death of seven monkeys in just two weeks at the Mahinder Chaudhary Zoological Park has given another setback to preservation of wildlife in the state. The lioness died in the early hours today.

Bradlaugh Hall site to be resumed
Chandigarh, May 31
Controversy has again surrounded the Bradlaugh Hall Trust, which owns two acres of prime property in Chandigarh’s Sector 15-A along the Madhya Marg. The trust site is to be resumed for non-construction while Punjab and Haryana governments and the Chandigarh Administration have washed their hands off the proposed international centre project on the site.

City nefarious for vehicle thefts

Maximum number of vehicle thefts north of Delhi take place in City Beautiful and its satellite townships of Panchkula and Mohali. These areas have also become the biggest centre for the resale of stolen cars in this region.

Schoolgirl died of jaundice, say doctors
Chandigarh , May 31
PGI doctors, who attended to Shobha Devi, a schoolgirl from Kasauli, who her family claimed died in the PGI yesterday due to beating up by her teachers in school, said today that she had actually succumbed to serious lung and chronic jaundice.

Encroachments removed
Chandigarh, May 31
The enforcement staff and staff of roads wing of the Municipal Corporation today removed illegal encroachments from the residential area in Sector 22. During the drive, encroachments on the road berms such as boundary walls, concrete structures, iron angles and barbed fencings were removed in accordance with the directions to clear 6 feet on both sides of the road.

Girl abducted, raped
Chandigarh, May 31
A 17-year-old girl was allegedly abducted by two men and later raped by one of them. It is learnt that the victim was abducted by the two accused from a house in Daddu Majra colony on May 28 on the pretext of that her mother had met with an accident. The girl was allegedly taken to Kalka, where she was raped by one of the accused.

Man stabbed by labourer
Chandigarh, May 31
A man was stabbed by a migrant labourer near new mandi in Sector 39 yesterday. Amir Chand was rushed to the GMCH, where he is recovering. According to an FIR registered under Section 307 of the IPC, Maheshwar Singh stabbed Amir Chand. The accused has been arrested.

Plea to keep Pabhat octroi free zone

The Ropar District Chemists Association has appealed to the Punjab Government to keep Pabhat village as an octroi free zone. The state government plans to merge the village with Zirakpur municipal limits.

SBI’s net profit up

A Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, comprising Mr Justice S.S. Sudhalkar and Mr Justice K.S. Garewal, will sit during the third week of summer vacations starting from June 4. Mr Justice R.L. Anand will look after civil and criminal work during the same period — from June 18 to June 22.

Syal for transfer of cases to Lok Adalat

The Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Golden Forest Limited, R.K. Syal has sent a letter to Justice N.K. Sodhi of the Punjab and Haryana High Court requesting him that the cases pending before the UT Legal Services Authority relating to his company be transferred to the Lok Adalat or the high court or a direction be issued to the Member Secretary of the UT Legal Services to expedite the disposal of the cases which are already settled.

Remand for ‘peddler’

Ms Aradhna Sahni, Judicial Magistrate (First Class), today remanded Tazudin Adesola, an accused in smack smuggling case, in judicial custody till June 13 . The accused has been sent to Central Jail Ambala.

Sidhu is psychologist of Indian team
Chandigarh, May 31
Dr Jatinder Pal Sidhu, Sports Psychologist, Indian Hockey Federation, will accompany the Indian men hockey team as psychologist for the three nations test series beginning from June 2. Dr Sidhu, who is working as Joint Director, Sports, UT, said the first test series would be held from June 2 to 8 in Malaysia followed by test series in Australia from June 9 to 13, then at New Zealand from June 14 to 25.
