Traffic cops target 12 roads
Anti-encroachment drive in city
Ludhiana, Dec 18 — The local traffic police has identified 12 roads in the city for removing encroachments from these. A list of these roads has been submitted to Dr S.S. Sandhu, Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation.

Postal strike called off
LUDHIANA, Dec 18 — Postal services were restored here today with members of all the three unions of the department resuming work. The decision to call off the strike came in the wake of the Delhi High Court order directing all the employees to resume work, failing which, contempt proceedings would be initiated against them.

Jassi and Sunita make Ludhianvis dance
LUDHIANA, Dec 18 — Jassi and Sunita Rao performed in Hotel Magnet Resorts here. Jassi, who was looking energetic as ever, began with a devotional song, followed by his other popular numbers. The number Dil Lai Gai Kudi Gujarat Di made the crowd dance. One could see persons dancing on chairs, in the aisles and anywhere else they could find a space. The others tolerated their kicks.

Sarabha’s cousin to renounce title
SARABHA, Dec 18 — Ms Jagdish Kaur, the cousin sister of Kartar Singh Sarabha, has decided to renounce the title, Mother of Punjab, that was conferred on her by the government. She says that she is angry because the Chief Minister of Punjab, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, has failed to keep his promise of preserving the ancestral house of the martyr.

JAGRAON, Dec 18 — A new Bajaj scooter was snatched from Mr Joginder Singh of Patti Sudhar while he was returning to his home near Sudhar last night.

Will Aman Sood’s murderers be booked?
LUDHIANA, Dec 18 — Dharnas have been staged. Suspects have been arrested and freed. Police officials have been transferred. The Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, has directed the police for speedy investigation into the case. But those responsible for kidnap and murder of six-year-old Aman Sood of Khanna have not been arrested.

LUDHIANA, Dec 18 — They are commonly known as ‘Lallaris’, and have been in the business of dyeing dupattas, turbans, woollens, sarees and what not from time immeorial. Rajinder and Ravi, have been dyeing dupattas and any other dress material for the last 30 years. Rajinder’s brother, the late Deesha, was known for his dyeing skills. He had taught these skills to Rajinder.

Cows loiter in grain market 
DORAHA, Dec 18 — Finding no other home, stray cows of the surrounding villages have accepted the grain market of Doraha as their permanent abode. The matter is acquiring serious proportions day by day but the administration seems entirely unconcerned about the havoc being created each day by these stray cows

Ludhiana, Dec 18 — The code of conduct issued by the Returning Officer, Mr Bhajan Lal Saini, for the elections of the District Bar Association, to be held on December 20, notwithstanding, it is party time all the way for lawyers, with contestants throwing parties where booze flows like water.

YC protest against ‘sale’ of donated blood
Ludhiana, Dec 18 — Hundreds of Youth Congress activists, led by Mr Komal Khanna, general secretary of the Punjab Youth Congress, organised a march in front of the Civil Surgeon’s office to focus on the alleged sale of blood in the Health Department.

Society set up for welfare of vets
Ludhiana, Dec 18 — The city mayor, Mr Apinder Singh Grewal, has stressed the need for providing better healthcare for cattle. Effective and affordable treatment must be provided to the animals and poultry birds so that the dairy and the poultry farmers could have better returns.

SPCA to construct veterinary hospital
Ludhiana, Dec 18 — The Ludhiana chapter of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will go ahead with the construction of a veterinary hospital at Fazal Garhi near Mattewal village on the land given for the purpose by the Deputy Commissioner.

KHANNA, Dec 18 — Mr Vijay Diamond, vice-president, BJP, Ludhiana district, condemned the Congress for pursuing vote bank politics on the Ram Mandir issue, here today.

842 teacher’s posts vacant in schools
LUDHIANA, Dec 18 — Posts of as many as 842 primary teachers, out of the 3,779, are vacant in the government schools in the district. Sources in the Education Department say that the Bet area is the worst hit. Nearly 47 posts are vacant in the Sidhwan Bet and 53 in the Machhiwara area. Even in the Mangat primary school block 54 posts have not been filled. The problem has now also started affecting the city. Nearly 25 posts remain vacant in areas like Haibowal, Dholewal, Sherpur, Jamalpur, Jail Road, Jodhewal, Gobind Nagar, Chander Nagar, area of Division No 3, Inder Puri and New Hira Nagar. No new appointments have been made ever since the teachers in these schools retired.

Renotify post of DSW, says PAU faculty
LUDHIANA, Dec 18 — While certain members of the faculty of Punjab Agricultural University say that the post of the Director Student Welfare should be notified again, the Board of Management of the PAU is likely to approve the appointment of a regular DSW at its meeting scheduled to be held tomorrow at Chandigarh.

Seminar on primary education
SAMRALA, Dec 18 — A seminar on primary education was held here today at a local hotel under the presidentship of Mr Bhupinder Singh Benipal, former chairman , Block Samiti, Samrala. Two papers were presented on the state of primary education in the state by prominent writer Mr Sukhdev Singh, Jagraon, and Dr Gulzar Mohd. Goria.

A well-stocked college library
LUDHIANA, Dec 18 — SDP College library is not computerised, but it is well stocked with 24,570 books, and subscribes to 40 periodicals and magazines and seven newspapers for the benefit of 1600 students and 80 members of the college staff.

LUDHIANA, Dec 18 — A family welfare camp was organised by the Family Welfare Department at the USPC Jain Charitable Hospital, Sundar Nagar, here. Dr Rajinder Kaur, Civil Surgeon, inaugurated the camp.

SAHNEWAL, Dec 18 — Navpreet Singh of Guru Nanak National College, Doraha, has became the university’s record-breaker in the shot put.

Ravi, Heena win carrom championship
LUDHIANA, Dec 18 — Ravi and Heena Narang won the carrom championship in the SMD School Indoor Sports Festival held here today. Harsh Kishore and Lovely Kataria won the chess championship in the senior boys’ and girls’ categories.

Traffic safety week
KHANNA, Dec 18 — The Khanna district police will organise a traffic safety week next month to educate the public about traffic rules. Mr R.N. Dhoke, SSP, Khanna, said here, today, that violation of traffic rules was increasing day by day causing accidents that claimed many human lives daily amounting to national loss worth crores of rupees.
