MEDICAL CAMP: A medical camp was organised by the Jain Welfare Society at Gobindpura village here on Sunday. More than 500 villagers were immunised against hepatitis-B.

WAR MEMORIAL: The District Sainik Board has decided to construct a war memorial-cum-job oriented vocational training centre at the Sainik Rest House complex here in the memory of armymen from the district, who laid down their lives for the country in different wars. The decision was taken at a meeting held at the mini secretariat on Monday.

HOSHIARPUR
ARRESTED: On a tip off the district police arrested Jagdish Lal of Flahigate Pharwara and seized Rs 12.50 lakh from the Maruti car he was driving at Moranwali village on Saturday. This was stated in a press note issued by Mr Sanjiv Kalra, SSP, here on Sunday.

KHANNA
CHECK-UP: An eye operation and medical check-up camp was organised by the local Lions Club (Greater) at the Civil Hospital here on Sunday. More than 250 patients were examined in the camp. Eye operations were performed by a team of eye specialists comprising Dr J.M. Singh, Dr Manmohan Kaushal and Dr Achhar Singh. The camp was inaugurated by Samadhi Wale Baba Ji. Medicines and special diets were given free of cost to the patients.

LUDHIANA
BRAWL: The city police registered a case against three youths involved in a brawl on Friday in a sweetshop in Ghumar Mandi. According to the FIR, the three persons booked were Kulwinder Singh Raju, Gurtej Singh Bittu and Kulwinder Kumar Kinda. The complainant Sachin Battra of Bengali Sweets had complained that the three youths injured his employees, two of whom had to be hospitalised, last evening when a quarrel broke out over the quality of an eatable. The three youths also had a weapon with them. They ran away after injuring the sweets shop employee.

TAASH KE PATTE: Ludhiana Sanskritik Samagam will stage a play Taash Ke Patte by actor Kadar Khan and his troupe, on December 20 in Guru Nanak Dev Bhavan at 7.15 pm. Entry will be by card only.

TALK SHOW: When it comes to grooming one’s personality, age is no bar. At least not for the members of Gayatri Ladies Club. A personality development class and dental talk was held here on Monday at a local hotel by the Gayatri Ladies club. The participants included not only enthusiastic young women, but middle aged women as well. The talk was given by Mrs Harpreet Kaur Gill, principal, Lovely Lotus school. Mrs Gill said women needed to have a positive approach towards life. She said the ‘new age woman’ should avoid stress. Mrs Gill said, “Special attention should be given on speaking boldly and confidently in public”. Dr Mrs Bhawna Walia, dentist, talked about various dental problems and gave valuable tips for a ‘good smile’. Mrs Walia said one should regularly visit her/his doctor. She stressed that sticky and starchy food should be avoided as it created lots of dental problems. She said, “Fresh food and green vegetables are the ingredients for healthy teeth”.

TB: Aasha with the help of the Medical Fraternity of Ludhiana will launch an intensive programme to eradicate the menace of Tuberculosis from all over the state on December 24, 2000. According to a press note, renowned physicians, surgeons, radiologists, pathologists and general practitioners would be participating in the event. The awareness programme will be launched by Dr Baldev Raj Chawla, Minister for Health and Family Welfare.

PROJECT: The councillor of ward no1 in the city Mrs Manjit Kaur Gogi formally launched the project for the paving of streets in Ranjodh Park locality in Haibowal. As she performed the land cutting ceremony, the residents distributed sweets. Speaking at this occasion, Mrs Gogi said the project, estimated to cost Rs 25 lakh, would take about 6 months to complete. Besides officials of the Municipal Corporation, prominent residents of the locality attended the function.

ANNUAL FUNCTION: Students of Everest Model School, Mundian Kalan, received prizes for their performance in academics, sports and co-curricular activities at their annual function organised here on Sunday. The students presented a cultural programme which began with a welcome song by students of the primary section. This was followed by a dance item performed by Bibu and Roopa on the number Maiya Yashodha yeh tera kanhaiya. A mime was presented by Manpreet, Aman and Mitika of senior section. Group songs were presented on Hum honge kamyaab ek din, Chamman ke parwaane and Bharat Mata ki chunautian. The chief guest on the occasion was Mr Darshan Singh, president, Parent Teachers’ Association, and Mr Hakam Singh, Managing Director of the school. Mr Darshan Singh gave away free uniforms to the poor students. Principal Asha Sharma encouraged the students to work hard for getting better results this year. 

POLLUTION BOARD: The Punjab Youth Congress (PYC) general secretary, Mr Sumit Batish has flayed the administration for its failure to check the increasing air pollution in the mega city, which was causing serious diseases of the respiratory system among the city residents. Addressing an anti-pollution rally taken out by the urban development cell of the Indian Youth Congress here, he charged the government and the Punjab Pollution Control Board officials with utter indifference and apathy towards the mammoth problem of increasing pollution. 

UNION: A meeting of boiler operators, held in Dhandari Kalan on Sunday, decided to set up ‘Shakti Boiler Operators Union’ in order to take up the genuine demands of the boiler operators working in the local industries. Mr Vipin Mishra and Mr Nand Lal Singh were elected President and General Secretary of the union, respectively. The other office-bearers of the union are: senior vice-president — Mr A.N. Mishra; vice-president — Mr Om Parkash Sharma; treasurer — Mr Harinder Verma . 

MACHHIWARA
MEDICAL CHECK-UP: The local Malwa Welfare Club, conducted a medical check-up camp at Gurdwara Charan Kanwal Sahib, here on Friday. As many as 550 patients were examined and given medicines free of cost. Out of these, 42 patients were selected for surgery at very nominal charges, whereas 5 patients would be operated without any charges. Dr Narottam Diewa, MS, supervised the camp. Mr Charanjit Singh Atwal, Speaker, Punjab Vidhan Sabha, in his inaugural address, appreciated the efforts of the club.

MOGA
DEMOLISHED: Two persons demolished a portion of a building situated at the tubewell belonging to Mr Jeet Singh of Chandnawan village here on Saturday. A case has been registered.

INAUGURATED: Former Minister of State for External Affairs and Member of Parliament R.L. Bhatia inaugurated the annual function of Doctor Saif-ud-Kitchlu Memorial School here on Sunday. He advised students to develop a scientific temper and inculcate the habit of hard work.

NANGAL
NSS CAMP: The NSS unit of Government Senior Secondary School distributed 84 blankets among the poor people of the area at a camp organised at Government High School, Bhabore Sahib. Mr Vijay Kumar, NSS programme officer of the school, said the District Education Officer, Ropar, Mr Ajmer Singh, donated Rs 10,000 to the school. Mr Jagdish Rahi, Assistant Director NSS, presided.

NAWANSHAHR
EYE CAMP: The local Doaba Social Welfare Society organised an eye and dental check-up camp at Janata Model School on Monday. Dr Roshan Sunkaria, Deputy Commissioner, inaugurated the camp. As many as 507 schoolchildren were examined. Medicines were also distributed free of cost.

DISTRIBUTED: The local Rotary Club distributed woollen clothes and shoes to 50 poor students of various schools of the town and adjoining villages on Monday. This was stated in a press note by Mr Vinod Arora and Mr R.K. Jain, president and secretary, respectively, of the club here on Monday.

PATHANKOT
RENOVATION: Mr Mohan Lal, Higher Education Minister, Punjab, said on Monday that Rs 5.97 crore would be spent on the renovation of the general bus stand. Talking to reporters at the Forest Rest House here he said the amount had been released for the ongoing works by the bus stand management committee.

TARN TARAN
BODY FOUND: The Chabal police found a headless body of an unidentified girl from a canal near Pandori Ran Singh village on Sunday. The girl was about 20-year-old and was pregnant. A post mortem was conducted on the body in the local Civil Hospital and was later cremated. A case under Section 302 of the IPC has been registered.Top

Dr Goyal was the founder member of Punjab State Dental Council and has been practicing for the last 35 years. 

participated: As many as 40 Anganwari workers participated in an orientation programme organised by Jan Shikshan Sansthan, at the Anganwari Center, Mauli Jagran, here on Monday. They were told about the new thrust areas of population and development education including inter-spouse communication, sex education, women empowerment and family education. Dr Dazy Zaradi of RRC, Panjab university gave a lecture on adolescent sexuality and population concerns. This was stated by Mr Arun Kamboj, incharge-director of Sansthan, in a press note. 

mass casual leave: The teachers of non-aided colleges of Chandigarh, Patiala, Ropar, have decided to go on a mass casual leave on Tuesday to protest against the alleged inordinate delay in the acceptance of their demands. Prof. N.P. Manocha, finance secretary of Panjab and Chandigarh College Teacher’s Union stated in a press note that the teachers would assemble at the bus stand of Banur and then organise a protest march. Banur is the constituency of Cap. Kanwaljit Singh, Finance Minister of Punjab. The union condemned the Finance Department for creating unnecessary delay in the implementation of the pension scheme which has already been notified as an act. The union would also present a memorandum to Punjab Chief Minister.

eye camp: The Gujjar Samaj Kalyan Parishad, Chandigarh will organise a free eye camp at Gularwala village, near Baddi, Himachal Pradesh on December 24, at 10 a.m. Eye specialist Jatinder P. Singh, will be incharge of the camp and the patients would be supplied free medicines, spectacles and lenses beside facilities free boarding and lodging. This was announced by Mr Amrik Singh, president of the parishad in a press note, here on Monday. 

distributed: The Lions Club, Chandigarh Supreme, distributed 40 blankets to poor people in the different parts of the city, here on Sunday. This was stated by Mr K.K. Bansal, secretary of the club in a press release. 

veterinary camp: A free mobile veterinary camp at colony no. 4 was organised by the Chandigarh chapter of People for Animals, here on Monday. More than 50 animals including dogs, cattle, hens were examined by a team of doctors consisting of Dr Nishtha Pathak and Dr Vikas Chopra. Anti-rabies vaccinations were administered to the dogs of the area. A Hindi version of the camp was a part of a series of free mobile camps by the People for Animals in the slums and villages of Chandigarh, Panchkula and SAS Nagar.

The family members of the Parishad and students of the institute attended the programme. The chief guest, Mr Surinder Mohan Kant, deputy director, Youth Services, Punjab emphasised on the need for a positive attitude in life. He said that even failure in life should be taken as experience gained. Mr Alok Shivpuri, principal of the institute, presided over the function. Mr Ashok Goyal, president of the Parishad said that more such programmes would be organised in other schools and colleges.

AMBALA
rally: Indian Air Force will conduct a recruitment rally at Chowari in district Chamba on December 21 and 22. According to a press note issued here on Monday the special recruitment drive for non-technical trades in the IAF would be conducted at the Government Degree College, Chowari, in batches. Youths from the districts of Chamba, Kangra, Mandi and Lahaul and Spiti, born between 01 June 1982 to June 1985, who are either in possession of a domicile certificate or have passed with 45% marks in Matric/equivalent examination from Himachal Pradesh Board will be permitted to appear in selection tests during the rally. The candidates should also have pass marks in English, to be eligible to appear for the written test. The selection test will be conducted from 9.30 a.m. onwards on both days. The results would be declared on the same day and successful candidates would undergo medical examination at the venue itself. Candidates are required to bring along three passport-size photographs and their original certificates. 

plan welcomed: Dr D.P. Asija, president, Haryana Aided and Private College Principals Association, has welcomed the decision of the state government to disburse pension to employees of private colleges. He said that more than 5000 college employees would benefit by this decision. 

intervention sought: Haryana Sangarsh Samiti convener, Mr Om Prakash Malik, has sought Prime Ministerial intervention in solving the long pending river water issue between Punjab and Haryana. In a memorandum to the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, Mr Malik has urged him to take an initiative in solving the problem. Mr Malik observed that the issue has been pending for the last 34 years and so far, no Prime Minister or political party has taken an initiative to resolve these issues. He appealed to Mr Vajpayee to take an initiative in settling the river water issue, a release said. He said that on one hand, the fields of Haryana are starved because of non-availability of water and on the other hand, the river water of Punjab is flowing towards Pakistan unnecessarily. 

function: Week-long golden jubilee celebrations of PKR Jain Senior Secondary Girls School began here on Monday. The celebrations started with the intoning of the holy “Navkar Mahamantra”. The function was graced by Sudhaji Maharaj and Kiranji Maharaj, disciples of Uppravartani Shri Swarn Kantaji Maharaj and Kusum Lataji alongwith her disciples, a release said. They asked the students to imbibe qualities of oneness and humility for the upliftment of society. The managing committee announced the opening of a new professional college of technology and a new public school. 

JIND
DEAD: A youth Karamvir of Kalwa village allegedly consumed poison on Sunday. He was admitted to the local General Hospital in a serious condition where he died. A case has been registered.

KAITHAL
VIKAS SAMITI: The administration has constituted vikas samitis in 241 villages in the district. Giving this information the Deputy Commissioner, Dr Mahavir Singh, said here on Monday that the ADC, Mr J.P. Kaushik would look after the work of constituting samitis in Pundri block, Mr Ashok Bishnoi, SDM, in Kaithal block and Mr Rajiv Mehta, SDM, in Guhla block.

SENTENCED: The Additional District and Sessions Judge, Mr H.S. Bhangoo, has sentenced Kitaba of Geong village to 20 years rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 after holding him guilty of killing his mother. According to the prosecution, the convict hit his mother on the head on May 17, 1999, resulting in her death.

SHOOTING INCIDENT: A youth Krishan (26) of Bagana village falling under Barwala police station was seriously injured in a shooting incident at the local bus stand here on Sunday. He was taken to the local Civil Hospital and later referred to Medical College, Rohtak. The police recovered a pistol from the toilet at the bus stand, where he was injured. A case has been registered.

MEDICAL CAMP: The Lions Club (Central) organised a medical camp at Shergarh village in the district on Sunday. About 800 persons, including women and children, were examined and given medicines free of cost.

PANIPAT
WORKSHOP: A workshop on holmium yag laser lithotripsy, a technique for treating urinary tract stones, was conducted at a local clinic on Sunday evening. The workshop was attended by doctors from the district and adjoining areas. Dr Pawan Gupta, a pioneer in the field, demonstrated the use of holmium yag laser.

ROHTAK
BODY FOUND: The police found the body of a 30-year-old youth near the local railway station on Sunday. The deceased was wearing a ring with Ram Phal Chauhan carved on it. Meanwhile, another body was found in a train at the railway station here on the same day.

SIRSA
EYE CAMP: An eye camp was held at the local Dera Sachha Sauda on Sunday in commemoration of the 9th death anniversary of second guru Sant Shah Satnam Singh. About 15,000 persons were examined while 1,100 others were operated upon. Medicines were distributed free of cost.

SONEPAT
OFFICE-BEARERS: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Janata Relief Society: president- Mr Ramesh Chand; vice-presidents- Mr Faqir Chand and Mr Ved Parkash; secretary- Mr Satish Mohan; assistant secretary- Mr Naresh Kumar; and treasurer- Mr Mahavir Prasad.

MONKEY MENACE: Resentment prevails among residents over monkey-menace, which has assumed an alarming proportion in the city. The residents alleged that the authorities concerned have failed to capture monkeys in spite of repeated complaints by them.

PRIZES: Mr Sampat Singh, Haryana Finance Minister, gave away prizes to students of Motilal Nehru School of Sports at the annual prize distribution function held at Rai, about 15 km from here, on Sunday.

RUN OVER: An unidentified man was run over by a train and killed near Sandal Kalan railway station, about 5 km from here, on Sunday. The body has been kept at the local Civil Hospital.

SALARY NOT PAID: Resentment prevails among daily- wage employees of horticulture in the PWD (B&R) at Murthal against the non-payment of salary for the last three months. They held a protest here on Monday and warned that if their salary was not paid immediately they would gherao the officials of the department.Top


 
HIMACHAL PRADESH

BILASPUR
HOLIDAY DECLARED: The Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Returning Officer ( panchayat elections) , Mr Jagdish Chander Sharma, has declared a holiday on December 20 for government employees as well as daily-wage workers in Bilaspur Nagar Parishad, Nainadevi Nagar Parishad and nagar panchayats of Ghumarwin and Talai areas in the district. Elections to the local bodies are scheduled to be held on December 20. In a notification the Deputy Commissioner has also prohibited the sale of liquor on December 19 and 20 and also on the day of counting.

CHAMBA
SHOPPING COMPLEX: The Chamba Welfare Association has demanded the construction of a shopping complex in the main bazaar of the town where an old government building was burnt in 1998. In a memorandum submitted to Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal, the president of the association, Mr Lajpat Singh Jandrotia, has suggested that the site located opposite to Chowgan No. 4, is suitable for the construction of a three-storeyed shopping complex.
