Agarkar steers India to win

RAJKOT, Dec 14 (UNI) — Ajit Agarkar proved to be the match winner for India slamming the fastest 50 ever by an Indian batsman and then returning to take the prized wicket of Andy Flower as India beat Zimbabwe by 39 runs in the fifth and final one-dayer played at the Rajkot Municipal Corporation ground here today.

India thus won the one-day series 4-1.

Put in to bat by Zimbabwe, India riding on half centuries by Badani, R. Sodhi and a 25-ball 67 by Ajit Agarkar India amassed a huge 301 for six. Zimbabwe in the end could manage only 262 runs being bowled out in 47.4 overs.

Zimbabwe started off their reply on a bright note with both the openers Alistair Campbell and Trevor Madondo going after the bowling.

Madondo was in prime form as he took on India’s opening bowlers Prasad and Sodhi carting them to all parts of the ground.

Campbell was also looking good, hitting Prasad for a huge six straight down the field.

However, Sodhi struck the first blow getting an outside of Campbell when he tried to flick Sodhi and instead the ball balloned up for keeper Dahiya to take a good running catch behind him. Next man in Rennie started by flicking Sodhi to the midwicket fence. Madondo, meanwhile, continued to hammer the Indian attack flicking Prasad to the boundary to bring up the Zimbabwe 50 in just 6.2 overs.

However, just when it once again looked that Zimbabwe were building a partnership Rennie gave a tame catch to short midwicket to Badani. Rennie made 10 with two boundaries.

Andy Flower looked in good touch as he off drove Agarkar to the boundary and then reversed swept Kapoor to the point boundary.

But Agarkar had not yet finished after his superb blitzkerg with the bat, getting the most important wicket of Andy, getting him to flick uppishly straight to square leg, where Sodhi took a simple catch. Andy made 19 with two boundaries.

Zimbabwe though, they kept up a run rate of over five runs throughout the innings, however, kept losing wickets at regular intervals which did them in.

Only Madondo with 71 of 70 balls was able to put up a good score before falling to Sriram as he tried to flick him only to miss and saw his furniture disturbed. He had 10 boundaries in his 71.

After his fall, though Marrilier made 38 and Brian Strang hit some lusty blows it was not enough as Zimbabwe were bowled out for 262 in 47.4 overs. India after being put into bat slumped to five for 114 with the two most senior batsmen Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar throwing away their wickets when they needed to stay to guide the youngsters in the absence of Ganguly who was suspended for this match.

However, the younger brigade of Badani and Sodhi played sensibly and showed a lot of maturity as they built a base from which Agarkar launched himself into the record books.

IT Department files report
Appraisal of 5 cricketers

NEW DELHI, Dec 14 (PTI) — The income tax authorities have completed the “appraisal report” of five cricket players and sent it to assessing officers for issuing notices to these players for filing their block returns.

Highly-placed sources in the Income Tax Department told PTI that appraisal reports of Manoj Prabhakar, Ajay Sharma, Ajay Jadeja and Nikhil Chopra had been sent to assessing officers, who would now issue summons to these players to file their block returns for the period 1990-2000.

The sources said the orders and summons to be issued to the players would be based on the appraisal report, which runs into several pages.

They said that a similar report on former skipper Kapil Dev would be completed soon and sent to the assessing officer.

The appraisal report of Navjot Singh Sidhu has also been completed and sent to the Ludhiana Directorate from where he would be issued notice for submission of the block returns, the sources said.

In a nation-wide swoop on July 20, IT officials raided premises of cricketers including Kapil Dev, Jadeja, Ajay Sharma, Nikhil Chopra and Manoj Prabhakar (all in Delhi), Azharuddin (Hyderabad and Mumbai) and Navjot Sidhu (Patiala), former International Cricket Council chief Jagmohan Dalmiya (Calcutta), Worldtel chairman Mark Mascarenhas (Bangalore) and BCCI treasurer Kishore Rungta (Jaipur), besides some bookies.

The income tax authorities had centralised the cases for players in Delhi and one Income Tax Commissioner would be assisted by two Assessing Officers for speedy disposal of the cases, sources said.

They said the appraisal report of bookies would be completed by next week after which they would have to submit their replies and file block returns to the assessing officers.

The CBI sources said it “would not act in haste” in prosecuting the two cricketers — Mohammed Azharuddin and Ajay Sharma —under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

CBI sources said they would wait for the final report of the income tax authorities before initiating any action on the two cricketers, who are public servants.

By Rubinder Gill
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Dec 14 — The Indian pair of Sunil Kakde and Suresh L. finished first in the men’s double sculs in heat B to enter the final at the sixth Asian Junior Rowing Championship at Sukhna Lake here today.

Kakde of Maharashtra, and Suresh, of Karnataka rowed strongly to clock a timing of 7:53:71. Taipei finished second in 8:18:41, followed by Korea in 8:19:92 and Indonesia in 8:21:71.

In women’s singles sculs, Gurpreet Kaur of Chandigarh, overcame a poor start to finish second in heat A clocking 9:14:97. Ozawa Mako of Japan was too strong to her and the Japanese finished first in 8:47:95. Nailya Nazarova of Uzbekistan and Li Pei Shvang of Chinese Taipei finished third and fourth, respectively.

The Indian women’s team in coxless fours finished a disappointing third and last after a disastrous start behind China and Uzbekistan. A lot of hopes hinged on Purna Laxmi Rai, Elezabeth, Manjula Rai and Mary Monika Minj. All the four girls are from Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The Indian duo of G. Nagrey and Satish Shirsat also disappointed in the men’s coxless pairs, finishing third and last. They clocked 8.42.04 in heat B. Chinese Taipei finished first in 8.15.57, followed by Hong Kong in 8:33:20.

China and Japan entered for the finals of the women’s singles sculs. In coxless fours Hong Kong and China entered the finals. In the men’s section in coxless pairs China and Chinese Taipei entered the final.

The coach of the Indian team, Dalbir Singh was not satisfied with the performance of the women’s coxless fours and men’s coxless pairs teams. “They could have done much better. They have clocked better times than this. We had a lot of hopes from coxless fours team, we still have,” he said.

“In singles sculs, Gurpreet had a shaky start. That’s where she lost the initiative. She did try to catch up but the Japanese rower was too strong for her. Any way by the time she could do anything, the race had finished.”

The manager of the women’s team Smita Yadav said “Now Gurpreet will have to race again. Let’s see how she does. We are hoping she will do better and we have confidence that she will.”

When asked about other teams she said the Japanese had been doing well and looked impressive. Uzbekistan arrived last night and did not show signs of tiredness.

The Indian coach felt he had too little time with the team “I have tried to do my best in the little time I have had with them.” This is the first time he has coached the junior team. He joined the team on November 23. In this time I can barely know the names of the players.”

Some urine and blood samples were also taken. Sandhya Kaul, gymnastics coach, and I.P. Nagi, football coach, SAI, collected a few samples, which were sealed and would be sent either to NIS, Patiala or SAI, Delhi.

NFL: East Bengal start campaign today

CALCUTTA, Dec 14 — East Bengal begin their hunt for the elusive National Football League title when they take on dark horse Tollygunge Agragami in the fifth edition of the tourney at the Rabindra Sarobar Stadium here tomorrow.

Glamorous Kingfisher East Bengal made a robust start to the season begging to tripple crown —McDowell Cup, Calcutta Football League and IFA Shield — only to falter during the Durand Cup.

Though there was no dearth of spirits in the gold-yellow camp dark memories of the 0-1 defeat in last year’s inaugural NFL match against the same opponents will return to hunt the team for sure.

“We are not scared of Tollygunge and besides my boys are ready to take on any challenge”, said East Bengal coach Syed Nayeemuddin thus dispelling any such nerve.

The coach had taken the players to the sea beach of Puri and then to the hills in Darjeeling to increase their physical fitness and up their spirits, but did not receive the dividends during the Durands.

The supporters of course expected much more from the team. “We have a weak link in the midfield and our frontline needs more teeth”, is how a fan reacted when asked about the team’s prospects.

The message it seemed had reached loud and clear to the team management for the club with an Uzbek duo wants to do the trick. Saripov, midfielder and Taliyav, striker, were awaiting the FIFA clearance to don the club clours for the inaugural match. But the fans would have to wait for another day to know to what extent they gelled with the team without any match practice.

Maneksha Tollygunge Agragami, however, have the advantage of the stadium as it is their practice ground and might prove a strong challenger for East Bengal.

Coach Amal Dutta, who was sacked after the NFL and reappointed again by the club authorities, said: “My boys will show their football prowess in the field and not through verbal attrition.

MUMBAI (UNI): Mahindra United, which is building up with new colours, name and coach, received big blows when their key players Nigerian Bernard, Najeeb, Tapan Ghosh and Ram Vijayan were ruled out from their opening National Football League (NFL) match against Air-India on Friday here at the Cooperage.

Mahindras manager Harish Rao, sounding disappointed, said here his towering sweeper back Bernard despite 42 days of rest, had yet not recovered from the blood clot near his knee.

Another defender Tapan Ghosh will also sit out with a hand fracture. Last year’s heavy scorer Najeeb and Vijayan are also injured, though both would be ready for the next match, he added.

Coach Shabbir Ali will replace these players with Abbas Rizvi, Manjeet, Anthony Perreira and possibly Andrew Louis who got transferred from Churchill Brothers.

Air-India will also be without Godfrey Perreira and Subir Sinha due to injuries but coach Bimal Ghosh is not unduly worried and will rely on Jameel and Tomba Singh to fill up the void.

MARGAO: Salgaocar Sports Club (Goa) will be hoping to use the home advantage to snatch full points when they cross swords with F C Koch in their first match to be played at Nehru Stadium Fatorda here on Friday.

It is also an opportunity to get even for Salgoacar, who had lost both their home and away matches against Kochi last year.

Their key players besides J M Vijayan, Jo Paul Anchery and Rajesh Kumar are the Libierian forward Earon Colt, medio Eugena Gray, defender Patric and goalkeeper Sunday Seah on whom the visitors will be banking tomorrow.

Salgaocar with new Ghanian recruit striker Ahmad Tejani, along with veteran former Indian captain Bruno Coutinho and Climax Lorence, have a formidable striking power.

However, it remains to be seen whether they will be able to translate this advantage into goals since the absence of their mid-fielders S. Venkatesh and Habib Adenkunle, who have signed for Mumbai’s Mahindra United, Salgoacar waistline looks weak. Their medio G. Bengal Lawal too is in the injury list.

Anand fights for draw, stays ahead

NEW DELHI, Dec 14 (UNI) — Vishwanathan Anand held out for a fighting draw in the face of a concerted attack from Michael Adams of England in the third game of the FIDE World Knockout Chess Championships final here today.

Though there were times when it looked Adams was better, not in terms of material but position, Anand showed his amazing defending abilities and took his second draw with black pieces. The long drawn out game lasted 73 moves and Anand heaved a sigh of relief.

“I am glad I came out of it alive,” commented Anand with the trademark smile firmly in place. Adams knowing he had lost his chance admitted, “maybe now in the fourth game I have five per cent chance. I am with black and he has white.” Adams must win to take the match into the tie-breaker.

With two draws, both with black pieces and win in between with white against Englishman Michael Adams means the top seeded Indian is just another draw away from confirming his place in final to be held in Teheran, Iran, from December 20.

Anand for the second time adopted the dour Petroff defence and made his indications clear that he was not going to take any needless chances with the dark pieces, especially when he is so well placed in this crucial match.

Meanwhile, in the women’s final, world champion Xie Jun of China is now just one draw away from adding the world knockout title to her well adorned crown. The 30-year-old Xie who won the first game of this match has drawn the last two is and now 2-1 ahead. A draw will give her the world title.

Alexy shirov who committed a horrible blunder on the second game yesterday bounced back with a win in the third game to go into the lead once again against the 17-year-old Russian Alexander Grischuk. The Latvia-born Grandmaster, Shirov, who like Anand has made Spain his home, won in 49 moves. Shirov had white in a game which was a Ruy Lopez going into the Chigorin defence.

Adams forced into a situation where he had to win with white pieces did not give the draw so easily to Anand. Realising that it would be next to impossible to grab a win with black against Anand in the fourth game, Adams gave it all in the third.

As a result, Adams gave Anand a run for his money. There were times when Anand looked in trouble. The game followed the same pattern as the first of this semi-final for the 14 moves and then it was Adams who came up with a novelty on the 15th move with Ra5.

It was clear that Adams had to come with something different and catch the Indian by surprise. But in these championships, Anand has shown some tremendous preparations in the opening.

In the end game, despite equal material, the Indian was somewhat delicately placed. Adam’s white bishop had greater mobility.

“I tried to keep up the pressure and I did manage it for quite some time. But obviously it was not enough,”admitted a disappointed Adams, who now needs to win the fourth and last game to take the match into the tie-breaker.

Anand seems to have seized a psychological advantage against Adams almost from the moment he chose to play Petroff in the first game. That was the defence, Adams had employed with black pieces, twice against Peter Svidler and then against Veselin Topalov.

So when Anand chose it as defence with black, it may well have surprised Adams. That was probably why he went away from it and used the Ruy Lopez against Anand.

However, when Anand used it yet again in the third game today, Adams had to take the initiative simply because this was the last time he would have white in the regulation game.

JCT rally to hold Bagan
From M.S. Unnikrishnan

NEW DELHI, Dec 14 — JCT Phagwara twice came back from arrears to score and hold defending champions Mohun Bagan to a 2-2 draw in the opening match of the fifth National Football League at the Ambedkar Stadium here today.

In a match of fluctuating fortunes, played out in front of virtually empty stands save for a few hundred spectators, JCT played their guts out to come at par with the famed Calcutta club, who were expected to canter away with a victory.

After a goal-less first half, Mohun Bagan forged ahead in the very first minute of second half when an intended minus pass by Basudev Mondal to one of his colleagues resulted in a goal as it hit the right post and bounced in, after defender Pawan Kumar had failed to clear the ball to safety (1-0).

But the Bagan lead was shortlived as JCT got the equaliser in the ninth minute when Hardip Singh Sangha’s 30-yard free kick from the left was deflected towards the goal by Hardip Gill from the top of the box, which sailed in after eluding the hands of custodian Kalyan Choubey (1-1).

With the action moving from one end to the other in quick succession, though the ball moved in an uneven bounce on a shoddy ground, Bagan regained their lead in the 21st minute when R.C. Prakash minused a through pass from the left by R.P. Singh to Jose Baretto who shot into the roof of the net from the top of the box (2-1).

But once again, JCT got the equaliser in quick time when a Daljeet Singh free kick from the right was stopped by Choubey on the flight, but could not hold it tight, and as the ball fell, captain Ram Pal, prowling in the goal area unmarked, like a panther, latched on the ball, to boot it home from a yard away (2-2).

It was a commendable display by JCT, who were not expected to share points with Bagan, as the latter were in full strength, and had come here after fully recharging their batteries following their Durand Cup triumph at the very same ground a few weeks back.

JCT owe a lot for the drawn game to the enterprising play-maker Hardip Sangha, who was here, there and everywhere to keep the Bagan players on their toes. His play-making eventually resulted in the Millmen’s goals, and Bagan would rue their failure to translate about half a dozen open chances into goals, to drop a point.

The Calcutta giants, the defending champions, and twice winners of the NFL crown, were let down by Prakash, Jao Santos and Baretto as they squandared away easy chances, when they needed goals the most.

JCT now play Mahindra United in Mumbai on December 18, while Bagan meet Tollygunge Aggragami on the same date in Calcutta.

Patrick replaces John McEnroe

NEW YORK, Dec 14 (AFP) — American Patrick McEnroe has been named US Davis Cup captain, taking the reins of a depleted American squad less than a month after brother John resigned citing “difficulties of the scheduling and format.”

“I’m very excited about it. It’s something I’m very passionate about,” said Patrick McEnroe. “I’ll pour all my energy into it to try to win the cup.”

The younger McEnroe (34) who signed a two-year contract with the United States Tennis Association, has a somewhat less prestigious playing record than older brother John, especially in the Davis Cup.

John won 77 singles titles and was the most successful player in US Davis Cup history, holding American Davis Cup records for wins (59), ties played (30), years played (12) and singles wins (41).

Patrick, meanwhile, enjoyed a respectable career on the ATP Tour but captured just one singles title. He was a singles semi-finalist at the 1991 Australian Open and winner of the French Open doubles event in 1989, alongside Jim Grabb.

In the Davis Cup, his success is mediocre; starting in 1993 Patrick played in four doubles matches and won three. However, the newly-appointed captain says his lack of competition will not handicap his ambitions.

“I did not have the same success than John but I think in some way it will help me,” said Patrick, who said he had received the full support of his brother.

The younger of the two McEnroes will be presented with a formidable challenge, and could meet some of the same problems encountered by his brother.

But, Patrick says, he will lobby hard to get the best American players committed to playing for their country.

John was unable to have the two top American players, Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras, available for Davis Cup most of the year. Sampras said he would not play in 2001 while Agassi is doubious.

“We all know what the problems are,” said Patrick.

“There will be frustrations down the way. But I’m gonna talk to every player. Everyone who can potentially play Davis Cup.”

“Sampras is on top of my list, and so is Agassi. I’ll see what they want to do. If they don’t want to play. I’ll respect their decision.”

Patrick may even consider selecting his brother John in doubles.

“I’ll certainly consider it. It’s out there. I’m certainly not ruling it out,” he said.

“But the bottom line is that it’s gonna come down to who is best capable of winning the match.”

McEnroe will make his captaincy debut next February when the USA takes on Switzerland in the first round.

Becker’s wife files for support

MIAMI, Dec 14 (Reuters) — The estranged wife of tennis star Boris Becker filed for financial support and custody of their two sons in a Miami court after the couple announced the break-up of their seven-year marriage last week, her attorney said.

Barbara Feltus Becker (33), an aspiring actress and singer, also asked for exclusive use of their $ 3 million condo on Miami’s ritzy Fisher Island but did not request a divorce, attorney Samuel Burstyn told Reuters yesterday.

“Barbara is a very reasoned person. She is taking measured actions because there is so much at stake here,” Burstyn said.

“Accordingly, we did not file for divorce, but with children and such a significant estate involved and in light of the problems they’ve been having, we have to take measured steps to see to it that she and the children are secure.”

Becker, also 33, a three-time Wimbledon champion, has publicly blamed the breakup on the pressure of being rich and famous. But media reports in Europe suggested that a family friend, hip-hop artist Sabrina Setlur (26) was a possible reason for the split.

Becker told a German newspaper on Sunday that he still loves his wife and had not ruled out a reconciliation.

Becker and his wife, who is black, married in 1993 and were widely admired for choosing to live in Germany — where mixed-race marriages are rare — despite receiving repeated violent racist threats.

Citing “abandonment,” Mrs Becker’s petition to a Miami-Dade Circuit court said she is “totally dependent” on Becker for money and has been accustomed to “an extremely high standard of living ... throughout their marriage.”

During their marriage she “devoted herself to being a partner, helpmate, confidant, advisor, friend and lover,” and now “survives on credit cards” that Becker could cancel at any time, the petition said.

It asked Becker to produce bank statements, tax returns, audits and business papers.

Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Maynard Gross signed an interim order forbidding either parent from taking the children, Noah (6) and Elias (1) out of the country.

Punjab crush Haryana
From Our Sports Reporter

ROHTAK, Dec 14 — Haryana suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of Punjab in the north zone Vijay Merchant cricket tie which concluded at Sat Priya Cricket Academy here today. The margin of victory in Punjab’s favour was an innings and 152 runs.

Haryana, who had suffered the humiliation of facing the follow-on, were given a solid start in the second essay by openers Puneet Gupta (71) had Kailash (95). The pair added 180 runs for the first wicket and denied any success to the Punjab bowlers for 56 overs. Once medium pacer Gursharan struck to dismiss Puneet, the decks were cleared for Punjab’s victory as Haryana’s remaining batsmen failed to grab the initiative. ITI hold SBT

BANGALORE, Dec 14 (UNI) — The locale was right, expectations high, but Indian Telephone Industries (ITI) failed to capitalise the home advantage and settled for a goal-less draw against State Bank of Travancore (SBT) in a drab opening encounter of the National Football League here today.

ITI thus could not avenge a 0-1 defeat they suffered at the hands of SBT last year.

Infusion of four foreign players in the team hardly made any difference as the telephone men made a mess of innumerable chances that came their way. The culprits were Nigerians Kenneth Ogwa and George Ekeh as the two strikers could rarely sight the target despite the bankmen’s suspect defence.

ITI enjoyed total territorial domination most part of the game except for the few odd forays the bankmen could mount on the rival citadel. On one such occasion ITI custodian Balaji fisted out a rasping kick from V.P. Shaji following a free kick.

ITI coach Habib, after the match, had no words to describe the poor performance. All that he could say was iti, save the two Nigerians, lacked good strikers and the wingers were not upto the mark. But for captain Dhanesh no one performed in the midfield.

SBT coach Najeeb said his boys could have performed better.
