HUDA lifts bar
on plots NEW DELHI, July 30 — The Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) has lifted the ban which prohibited individuals from acquiring more than one plot in an urban estate in the general category.
Town and Country Planning Minister Dhirpal Singh said here that HUDA had made some significant amendments in its policies for the welfare of the general public. Under the oustees category, plots would also be given to those landowners whose land had been acquired even prior to September 10, 1987, if the plots were still available in the sector or urban estate in which the land had been acquired. He said while making allotment of petrol station sites, preference would be given to war widows of the martyrs of Operation Vijay. He said tenders for 26 petrol station sites and 11 LPG godown sites had been floated. The minister said HUDA had also formulated a uniform policy regarding compounding rates for compoundable violations by allottees during construction on their plots in different urban estates to avoid any discrimination. |
Gang of thieves busted, 5 held KAITHAL, July 30 — The local branch of the CIA achieved another success when it busted a gang of thieves and recovered stolen property worth lakhs, including two Maruti cars, jewellery, gas cylinders, TV sets and other goods. The police has solved more than half a dozen cases of theft following the arrest of gang members. The Superintendent of Police, Mr Parbhat Ranjan Deo, told mediapersons here today that the police had arrested Bhim Singh, Mohinder and Suresh of Didwana, Sanjeev of Pharal and Gurvinder, alias Kala, of Teek. The search for their two accomplices, Balia Guzar of Kakot and Ravinder, alias Binder, of Sollu Majra, was on. The police was also on the lookout for a jeweller who used to purchase stolen jewellery. Giving further details, Mr Deo said the members of this gang had stolen jewellery from a shop here on the night of June 23. They had even picked and took with them a heavy iron safe and dumped it in a canal later after removing jewellery from it. The safe too had been recovered from the canal, he added. The gang members stole a Maruti car belonging to Dr Manmohan and used this vehicle for stealing cylinders and TV sets. Later, these thieves along with their accomplices stole another Maruti car belonging to Parveen Kumar here on the night of June 21. The SP informed that one of the accused, Ravinder, is on bail as he was already facing trial for his alleged involvement in three theft cases. |
Farmers to launch stir on Aug 7 GURGAON, July 30 — The Kisan Sangharsh Panchayat, spearheading an agitation of farmers to press the Haryana Government to find out ways for their exemption from recovery of dues paid to them by the Haryana Urban Development Authorities (HUDA) by way of enhanced compensation against their land acquired by it to set up sectors, has decided to organise a sit-in dharna on the national highway on August 7. The decision for the dharna was disclosed today by the working president of the Kisan Sangharsh Panchayat, Mr Khazan Singh. The proposed dharna would be the first phase of the direction action programme. Mr Khazan Singh said the farmers had been deeply hurt by the “non-cooperative” attitude and “arrogance” of the state government towards their plight. Delegations of the affected farmers had met the Chief Minister Mr Om Prakash Chautala, several times on the issue. One such delegation met him after the farmers heeded to the request of the government to postpone their agitation of “chakka jam” on the national highway, which was scheduled for June 10. The Chief Minister had assured to take remedial measures and help the farmers, but nothing has been done in spite of the assurances given more than a month ago. It now appear that the government had dissuaded the farmers from going ahead with the agitation by employing deceit and giving false assurances, he added. The lower court had enhanced the compensation to the farmers in about a dozen villages falling in Gurgaon subdivision for the land acquired by HUDA in the past few years. HUDA went in appeal to the Punjab and Haryana High Court against the lower court’s order. The high court reduced the amount of enhanced compensation. This development took place when the HVP-BJP government was in the saddle of power in the state. While the appeal to the high court by HUDA was on the lower court intervened and got the enhanced compensation paid to the affected farmers. The payments were made after the farmers furnished sureties. Many of them sought the help of their relatives and friends to stand guarantee for obtaining the amount. According to Mr Khazan Singh, the farmers spent the money without having any inkling that the high court would reduce the amount of enhanced compensation. HUDA is now adamant about recovering the dues. The cumulative amount tots up to more than Rs 400 crore. However, the administration puts it to about Rs 70 crore. Significantly, when the farmers started an agitation on the issue during the rule of the HVP-BJP the INLD leaders, then in the Opposition, were in the vanguard. The leaders of the panchayat allege that now that they are in power the INLD leaders are ignoring the issue. To give a boost to the agitation, the office-bearers of the panchayat are in touch with senior leaders of all political parties to join the farmers in their proposed dharna. |

Imposition of fuel
surcharge flayed GURGAON, July 30 — The Gurgaon Industrial Association (GIA) yesterday expressed resentment over the decision of the Haryana Electricity Regulatory
Commission (HERC) to allow the Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam (HVPN) to impose fuel surcharge on various categories of consumers, saying that it would adversely affect the industry.
Mr Jagan Nath Mangla, president of the GIA, said that the imposition of the fuel surcharge at the rate of 20 paise per unit for the industry was on the much higher side and would come down hard on it as the industry was already reeling under various taxes imposed by the state government. As the HVPN does not have its own power generating agency and was purchasing power from outside, the move to impose fuel surcharge was not justified, he added. He said in case the move was not reviewed it would hurt the small and medium scale
industries. |
