CHANDIGARH, July 21 — The Haryana Agriculture Department is on cloud nine these days. It has every reason to be so. Against the target of 122.50 lakh tonnes of foodgrains fixed for 1999-2000, the state produced 130.65 lakh tonnes.

The state Agriculture Minister, Mr Jaswinder Singh Sandhu, said at a press conference here today that the production in 1999-2000 surpassed the previous best production of 120.88 lakh tonnes during 1998-99 by about 10 lakh tonnes.

Mr Sandhu said taking the average production of the past three years as the bench mark, his department had fixed a target of 126.5 lakh tonnes for 2000-2001. The Commissioner, Agriculture, Mr Naseem Ahmed, who was also present, added that the department expected a production of about 134 lakh tonnes during the current year.

Several factors like the introduction of new high-yielding disease-resistant varieties like PBW-343, WH-542, Raj-3765 and UP-2338 over 80 per cent of the cropped area, increased use of DAP and three new herbicides coupled with ideal weather conditions, pushed up the average yield of wheat from 40 quintals per hectare to 41.67 quintals per hectare.

Mr Sandhu said to break the paddy-wheat rotation, crop diversification was being encouraged. While sunflower cultivation had been propagated in Haryana since 1990-91, the cultivation of rajmash and soyabean, was also being popularised.

In spite of a decline in the cropped area, Mr Sandhu said, the consumption of agricultural inputs was not allowed to go down. Certified seeds to the tune of 3.94 lakh quintals were distributed among farmers, surpassing the target of 3.66 lakh quintals. The target in this regard for the current year was 4.80 lakh quintals.

The average fertiliser consumption in the state was 140 kg per hectare against the national average of about 86 kg. A subsidy of Rs 180 crore on phosphatic and potassic fertilisers was given to the farmers against Rs 150 crore during 1998-99.

Mr Sandhu said incentives were being provided to the farmers to pursue unconventional areas of farming. The area and production under fruits had increased considerably from 26, 177 hectares and 1.92 lakh tonnes, respectively, in 1998-99 to 28, 629 hectares and 2.12 lakh tonnes respectively. As many as 600 mushroom growers had been trained and the production target for mushroom had been fixed at 3,600 tonnes.

The government planned to set up a “food park” at Rai in Sonepat district to promote agro-processing units. A delegation of farmers would be sent to Israel and the USA for getting expertise in setting up modern horticulture farms.Top

Abhay warns erring leaders
From Our Correspondent

SIRSA, July 21 — Rori MLA Abhay Chautala, while addressing a press conference here today, said nobody was above law and misdeeds would be punished.

He was speaking regarding the cases of former minister and Congress leader Anand Singh Dangi, youth Congress President, Randeep Singh Surjewala, and son of former Finance Minister Charan Das Shorewala.

Mr Abhay Chautala said the case against Mr Dangi was quite old as it was registered after an inquiry during the Bansi Lal regime. Mr Dangi as the then Finance Minister had allotted nearly 1400 acres of land to his near ones.

Regarding Mr Shorewala’s son he said people had raised voice against son of Mr Shorewala, for selling jobs. How could this government be responsible for the action against these persons, he questioned.

Recounting the INLD government’s achievement he said development of a state could be measured by the condition of water, electricity and roads.

The present government had spent Rs 850 crore on laying and maintenance of roads in one year. The old age pension was doubled to Rs 300 crore, he claimed.

He said a state-level rally would be organised at Kaithal on July 24 to celebrate the completion of one year by the government. The rally would be addressed by the Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala.

Later, he addressed a workers meeting at the local Janta Bhavan.Top
