Distillery sealing political
vendetta CHANDIGARH, June 15 The former Haryana Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition in the Vidhan Sabha, Mr Bhajan Lal, today accused the INLD Government of indulging in political vendetta by sealing his son-in-laws liquor distillery at Hisar yesterday. In a statement issued here today Mr Bhajan Lal said the shaky Chautala government which is riddled with internal bickerings has started harassing opposition leaders by indulging in acts like the one in which the State Pollution Control Board sealed my son-in-laws distillery. This is the second time when the distillery has been sealed by the board. Earlier, in December , 1996, when Mr Bansi Lal was the Chief Minister, the distillery was sealed and power supply to it was disconnected. The power supply was restored only after the court orders. Meanwhile, the Chairman, Haryana State Pollution Control Board, Mr H.S. Bains denied the allegation levelled by Mr Bhajan Lal that the distillery of his son-in-law, Mr Anoop Bishnoi had been sealed due to political vendetta. He said Associated Distillery Ltd, Hisar was a highly polluting unit manufacturing alcohol by the distillation process and fall under 17 type of large and medium scale highly polluting category. He said during the course of production, the unit was causing pollution and discharging 375 kl per day of effluent on the land for percolation and adversely affecting the sub-soil water. |
MC returns tax proposals to govt KURUKSHETRA, June 15 Thanesar municipal council, in response to a unanimous decision taken at its meeting held here yesterday, returned the new house, fire and shop proposals, to the Haryana Government for its reconsideration. According to Mr C.B. Madan, vice-president, Municipal Council, Thanesar, this decision was taken, keeping in view the feelings of the tax payers who, demonstrated here yesterday in protest against these taxes launched by the state government. They also submitted a memorandum to the newly elected councillors demanding withdrawal of fire and shop taxes. They also urged that the house tax based on the cost of the land and the building should not be imposed. The tax payers also submitted a copy of the memorandum to the SDM, Dr Nar Hari Singh Bangar. Mr Madan said that the
council, unanimously passed the license and registration
fees and the electricity tax. However, the council also
decided to forward two proposals of waiving off Rs 80
lakh house tax due as balanced and the construction of
toilets at about eight places in the town, he added. |
Ranga: doctors to serve in
rural areas KURUKSHETRA, June 15 All the vacant posts in the Haryana Health Department will be filled without further delay. This was stated here today by the Haryana Health Department, State Minister, Dr M.L. Ranga. He said that according to decision, the sanctioned staff, including doctors, would continue to serve the department at their respective stations while the surplus staff would be directed to serve in rural areas. Thus, serving the department in rural areas had been made compulsory to enhance the health awareness, he added. Justifying the decision, Dr Ranga said that there were 100 vacant posts of the doctors and out of these, 40 vacancies would be filled by those who would be completing their M.D. (Master of Medicines) while rest of the 60 posts would be filled from those working on sanctioned posts at various hospitals and dispensaries of the state, he added. Keeping in view the morning time consumed by the doctors attending court cases instead of the patients Dr Ranga said that the Haryana Health Department would approach Punjab and Haryana High Court with the request that the court evidences might be allowed to be attended in the afternoon so that they could attend to the patients during morning session. Dr Ranga further said sometimes the staff members go on leave after submitting undated applications and the applicants allegedly marked their presence after enjoying the furlough (absence without sanctioned leave) and later on destroy them. The undated applications henceforth would not be considered and such staff members would not be marked absent, he warned. Dr Ranga said that the
Aids Control Board had been constituted and its branches
opened at the district level in the state. |

Mr S S Rori, Director, HSEB, said while 70.08 per cent of the girls were successful, the corresponding figure of the boys was 65.64 per cent. In all 67.33 per cent of the candidates passed the examination, he said. Mr Jagdish K. Sihag, Secretary, HSEB, said out of a total of 2,70,299 candidates, 1,81,994 were declared successful, while 38,925 students were placed in the compartment category. The total number of boys appearing in the examination was 1,67,490 out of which 1,09,944 students were successful, and out of 1,02,809 girls 72,050 were declared successful. Also students from schools situated in the urban areas did better than the rural students. 73.52 per cent of the students from the urban areas were successful, while the corresponding figure from rural schools was 65.09. Farming, home science at school
too HISAR, June 15 The teaching of agriculture and home science will be introduced at the school level in Haryana shortly. This was announced by Mr Abhey Singh Chautala, newly elected INLD legislator from Rori Assembly constituency and son of the Chief Minister here today. He said this provision had been made in the new education policy recently finalised by a high level panel constituted for the purpose and a formal announcement was expected to be made within the next few days. The introduction of teaching of agriculture at the school level would go a long way in improving agriculture in Haryana. It would in turn help improve the states predominantly agricultural economy in the long term. The courses would be framed carefully keeping in view the requirements of the state in particular and agriculture in general. He hoped that this would help improving the standards of agricultural education as the basic courses would now be conducted in schools. Regarding the introduction of home science in schools, he said even this was felt necessary for the all-round development of Haryanvi women who were now shouldering dual responsibilities of being career women as well as devoted housewives. The syllabi would be drafted in consultation with sociologists, educationists and womens representatives. Mr Chautala, who is an alumnus of the CCSHAU, was felicitated by the university on his elections to the Haryana Assembly last month by a record margin. He had passed out of the HAU College of Sports two decades ago. He said the state agriculture department has recently asked the Subordinate Services Selection Board to advertise posts of Agriculture Development Officer. More than 100 posts had been lying vacant for the past 10 years since the Bansi Lal and Bhajan Lal regimes has not filled any of them. This had hampered agricultural development of the state. In reply to a question, he said after the Rori election the Congress had been decimated in the state. He ridiculed the claim of the former Chief Minister, Mr Bhajan Lal, that the Chautala government would fall within the next eight months, saying that the Congress lacked any issues as most of the problems of Haryana had been taken care of by the new government. While his party was in the Opposition it played its role well and highlighted the issues concerning the people of Haryana in a democratic manner. He claimed that since the Congress now lacked a mass base, its leadership in the state was resorting to irresponsible politics. Referring to the SYL Canal issue raised by the Haryana Congress chief, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Mr Chautala said though Mr Hooda remained a member of the Lok Sabha for three terms, he did nothing to resolve the issue although during one of his terms the Congress was in power at the Centre as well as in Punjab and Haryana. Mr Chautala was accorded
a rousing reception on his arrival here this morning by
party workers and students of the HAU. He laid the
foundation stone of the kisan seva kendra on the campus.
The kendra is funded by the World Bank. The
Vice-Chancellor, Mr Vijay Kumar, said it would provide
single-window service to the farmers from all over the
state. |
CM
convenes meeting of civic chiefs ROHTAK, June 15 The Haryana CM , Mr Om Parkash Chautala, has convened a meeting of the newly elected presidents of municipal committees in the state at Chandigarh on June 18. He has also called a meeting of deputy commissioners and superintendents of police the same day to review the law and order situation in the state and the measures taken in the flood-prone districts. This is perhaps the first time in the recent history of the civic bodies that the Chief Minister has convened such meeting. The executive officers have also been asked to attend the meeting. Although the agenda is not known yet, the Chief Minister will probably review the financial position of the fund-starved civic bodies and discuss various methods to mobilise additional resources. The recently imposed local area development tax is unlikely to benefit the municipal committees which have no industrial units or are not on the route followed by truckers for carrying raw material to industrial units. Interestingly , the
Municipal Committee at Rohtak has not yet been
constituted though elections to it were held over two
months ago on April 2. Though the district administration
had convened a meeting of the newly elected municipal
councillors on May 25, it was adjourned as the
authorities were not clear about the voting rights of the
MLAs and the MP. The administration is still awaiting a
clarification on this issue. |

About nine months ago, Gian Giri stayed in the temple for about four months and the village children used to go to meet him daily. Kuldeep was one of them. Fake
degree
issue reaches Raj Bhavan CHANDIGARH, June 15 - Is one of the faculty members of Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University having a fake Ph.D degree ? At least that is what has been alleged in a letter written by "the faculty members" of the university to the Haryana Governor, who is also the Chancellor of the university. The letter dated May 29, and sent by post, reached Raj Bhavan on June 12. The letter lauded the Vice Chancellor for instituting a probe into the alleged fake degree held by one of the faculty members but it added that impartial inquiry would not be possible The letter also enclosed a copy of a letter written by Mr J K Bhatia, Evaluation Officer at the Association of Indian Universities, Delhi, who informed the Registrar of the university that " Hanover School of Veterinary Medicine, Germany, has now clarified that 'Dr.med.vet.' degree obtained by the candidate is not equivalent to Ph.D". There are some other black sheeps too in the HAU, it was alleged as the letter demanded inquiry by the CBI or the CID into the fake degree scandal. The Raj Bhavan staff were perplexed by the letter because it was not signed by anybody. Nevertheless, considering the gravity of the charges they set it aside to show it to the Governor. However, Mr Mahabir Prasad, who was to complete his tenure one day after the letter was received, understandably was busy with other things and did not find time to look at the letter. Now it will be up to the
new Governor of Haryana to have a look at the letter and
decide if any action has to be taken regarding the
allegation. |

Lukewarm response to condom
vending machine AMBALA June 15 Condom vending machines were introduced here to ensure that people have easy access to condoms which in turn would help in keeping at bay AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. Although generating awareness about the methods to prevent AIDS and HIV is a continuous ongoing process, apparently the machines are not proving as effective as they were initially hoped to be. A condom vending machine was set up at a tea stall on 12th Cross Road near Ambedkar Park in Ambala Cantonment. The tea stall vendor said that despite the large number of truckers who park their vehicle in the vicinity, only a handful try to get a condom from the vending machine. The tea stall owner, Mr Narender, said that the condom vending machine was set up about eight months back. I allowed them to put up the machine as it was a purely voluntary service for the benefit of the truckers who frequent my shop, he said. He observed that the machine does not work properly and he is now going to request them to remove the machine from here. What is the point of keeping the machine here if it does not work properly? Every time somebody inserts a coin and tries to take out a pack of condoms, the machine gets stuck. The problem is that the pack of ten seems to be too big, he said. Mr Narender said that the customer either wants him to take out the condom or leaves without taking the condom. When I am attending to other customers, it is not possible for me to everytime open the condom vending machine and take out the condom, he said. When this correspondent was talking to the tea stall owner, a trucker came to the tea stall to get condoms. First the man looked left and right. He then peered cautiously into the tea stall where the condom vending machine had been kept. Speaking in a low tone, the man asked for a change of Re 1 coin from the tea stall vendor so that he can put it in the machine. He inserted the coin but no condom came out. Incidentally, from June
9 to 16, a family health awareness week is on in Ambala.
Door-to-door surveys are being conducted by medical
experts to find out the number of STD and RTI cases. A
health camp was held today in Ambala Cantonment. An NGO,
REEDS, also participated in the health camp.
Plea to give rebate in telephone
calls AMBALA June 15 The Haryana Chamber of Commerce and Industry has demanded that the telephones which are not working for the past one week should be given rebate in calls and before disconnecting a telephone, a proper registered notice should be given to the subscriber. The HCCI state senior vice-president, Dr N.C. Jain, says that a registered notice to the subscriber for the non-payment of bill is a mandatory clause mentioned in the telephone directory for disconnection of telephones, a release said. He observed that exporters were suffering because of faulty telephones. Simultaneously, the Telecom Department is losing business and the subscribers are financially penalised. |
