Dravid, Sachin bolster India SAS Nagar, Oct 12 Disciplined batting by Indians saw the New Zealanders toil throughout the third day in the first Test of the three-Test Pepsi Challenger Cup at the Punjab Cricket Association stadium here today. Overnight not out opener Sadagopan Ramesh was dismissed a little less than one hour after the resumption of the day's play while debutant Debang Gandhi lost his wicket after a couple of overs after the lunch break. These were the only bright spots during the otherwise forgettable day's play for the visitors as the hosts finished the day at satisfying 303 for the loss of these wickets. Skipper Sachin Tendulkar and one down batsman Rahul Dravid both batted with a great deal of application and stubbornness and prevented the visitors from making further inroads to remain unbeaten on 54 and 87,respectively. To their credit the rival bowlers maintained a decent line and length. Crisp fielding and none-too-impressive running in between the wickets by the batsmen ensured that the runs came only in trickles. India have, in fact, 171 runs in their kitty after deducting New Zealand's 132-run first innings lead. Indian batsmen were more content to play a waiting game and showed little inclination to go for their strokes with the result that the pre-lunch session saw them score just 51runs in 31 overs, post- lunch session produced 55 runs in the same number of overs bowled, while the last session saw them add 88 runs to the total. Domination of ball over bat could further be gauged from the fact that only three boundaries were scored in the first session--two by Gandhi and one by Dravid.Ramesh batted for 52 minutes for adding 15 runs to his overnight score before he was foxed into giving a return catch to left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori. Dravid, who came in to bat next, was quite circumspect and added 44 runs in the company of Gandhi in 25.1 overs for the second-wicket partnership before Gandhi was snapped lbw by part time off-spinner Nathan Astle. He faced 242 deliveries and struck six fours in making his first half century in the debut Test. Dravid and Tendulkar continued in the same vein. The tempo slightly picked up after the new ball was taken. They completed their 100-run partnership for the third wicket in 43.3 overs.Tendulkar guided a Vettori delivery to fine leg and ran three runs to complete his 22nd fifty in the 69th Test and fourth against the visitors in his 10th Test. Undoubtedly, the Indian batsman were also hampered in run making as the odd ball kept a trifle low and Vettori maintained a nagging line pitching the ball on or outside the leg stump, which left the right- handed batsmen with the only option of sweeping the ball. And the bespectacled left-armer bowled a marathon spell of 56 overs, 22 of them being maiden. But the fact remains that the cautious approach saw the team score 181 runs during the day which can have a definite bearing on the final outcome of the match. India (Ist innings): 83 New Zealand (Ist innings): 215 India (2nd innings): Gandhi lbw b Astle 75 Ramesh c and b Vettori 73 Dravid batting 87 Tendulkar batting 54 Extras: (b-4, lb-6, nb-4) 14 Total (for 2 wkts, 140 overs) 303 Bowling: Cairns

Lanka play Windies today SHARJAH, Oct 12 (UNI) Exciting cricket is on the cards when the three-nation Coca Cola Cup Championship begins here tomorrow with Sri Lanka taking on the West Indies in the opening encounter. However, most cricket buffs will watch with keen interest the performance of Pakistan, the third team featuring in the tournament, as they are leaving for Australia straight from here to play a crucial Test and one-day series against the world champions. The Australia tour provides Pakistan an opportunity to avenge their humiliating defeat by the Kangaroos in the World Cup final. All the three teams are in fine fettle, having tasted success in their recent outings. The Sri Lankan and West Indies teams have already arrived here while Pakistan reach late this evening. Both Sri Lankan and West Indians had practice at the nets at the lovely Sharjah ground. Buoyed by their historic win against Australia in the just-concluded Test and one-day matches, Sri Lanka, under the leadership of master blaster Sanath Jayasuriya, look a much reformed team with many of the youngsters in the side determined to prove their worth. An upbeat Jayasuriya said I know it will be a tough assignment as both Pakistan and the West Indies are top teams in the world but right now our team is combining well. He said the past is behind us. There is no problem in the team and I am getting support from all the senior players in the squad. The inclusion of Arvinda de Silva will certainly add to the strength of the team. Sri Lankan coach Dave Whatmore, who has played a pivotal role in changing the fortunes of the team, said we are playing well and are confident. Pakistan is a little stronger and you cannot underestimate the West Indies, especially when you have a player like Lara playing. True to his reputation, Lara struck the second fastest century in one-day cricket against Bangladesh just before coming here.He reached the three-figure mark in just 45 balls as his team thrashed Bangladesh 2-0 in a two-match series. A relaxed Lara told newspersons that at the moment, we are a team in the making. There is a lot of young blood in the team and in this tournament we are not expecting an easy ride as both Pakistan and Sri Lanka are top sides and both have been producing their best recently. Toronto, he said, was a big disappointment as the West Indies could not put its act together and lost to India 1-2 and subsequently went down 0-3 to Pakistan. I hope things will change a bit this time round, Lara said. With Wasim Akram again at the helm of affairs, Pakistan have their job cut out as they have to prove that they have left behind the memories of their drubbing at the hands of Australia in the World Cup final. They have already blanked the West Indies 3-0 in the Toronto DMC Series recently. The Pakistani team for the Australia tour is to be chosen after the Sharjah Cup. New Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mujeebur Rehman Khan, who was in Dubai for the International Cricket Council (ICC) governing body meeting, said the World Cup depression was over and we are now on the right track. Sri Lanka take on the West Indies in the first match while Pakistan meet the Caribbeans on October 14. Pakistan and Sri Lanka play on October 15. The West Indies will
have their return match with Sri Lanka on October 17. It
will be Pakistan vs Sri Lanka on October 18 and Pakistan
vs the West Indies on October 19. The final will be
played on October 22. |
Agassi, Kafelnikov for exhibition match MELBOURNE, Oct 12 (AFP) Andre Agassi and Yevgeny Kafelnikov, the worlds top two ranked players, have been confirmed as starters for the Kooyong tennis exhibition the week before the Australian Open in January. But Wimbledon champion Pete Sampras, who did not play at the Open this year citing exhaustion, has not yet committed to the eight-man tournament, organisers said. They will keep a place open should Sampras decide to make the trip to next years opening grand slam tournament. Agassi, who won this years French and US Open titles in his best season for some time, will return to Kooyong as preparation for the Australian Open, while Australias No 1 Patrick Rafter will be contesting the round-robin event for the first time. Organisers yesterday announced other entries as defending champion Thomas Enqvist of Sweden, Dutchman Richard Krajicek and German Nicolas Kiefer. The Kooyong Classic will be staged from January 12 to 15. ZURICH (Reuters): Patty Schnyder started to win back Swiss tennis fans and sponsors battling back from a set down to beat American Amy Frazier 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the first round of Zurich Indoor Championships on Monday. Schnyder, 20, rivalled world number one Martina Hingis in popularity in their native Switzerland until a controversial five-month relationship earlier this year with German guru and faith healer Rainer Harnecker, 42, struck her wholesome image. She stepped cautiously onto the court, unsure of the reception she would receive playing in front of the Swiss public for the first time since the much-publicised relationship which caused a rift with her family until a reconciliation in May. But Schnyder was greeted by warm applause from a forgiving crowd, which continued to support her loudly throughout the match. I was nervous because you always want to do well in front of the home crowd, said Schnyder, who had won just four matches since the French Open and crashed out in the first round in five of her last nine tournaments. But the crowd was very supportive and helped me get my first break. This was an important win for me. Sidelined since the US Open with a wrist injury, Schnyder showed signs of rustiness and nervousness as Frazier recorded an early break and easily won the first set. Buoyed by crowd, Schnyder quickly steadied herself and began playing with the confidence that carried her to five titles last year and into the top 10 of the world rankings. But it will take more than one win for Schnyder, who split with Harnecker in May, to improve on her current ranking of 24 and restore confidence in sponsors, who deserted her when her off-court problems resulted in a failure to show up for a Fed Cup match last April. The decision proved to be a costly one for the young Swiss, who is believed to have lost $ 250,000 a year in sponsorship deals. In other first round action, fifth seed Barbara Schett of Austria cruised to a convincing 6-3, 6-4 win over Lisa Raymond of the USA. Corina Morariu kept the day from being a total washout for the Americans when she brushed aside Russian Elena Dementieva 6-2, 6-2 to join compatriot and world number three Venus Williams, who received a first round bye, in the second round. American world number
two Lindsay Davenport, winner in Zurich for the past two
years, will not defend her title because of a wrist
injury. |
Spotlight on Powell SHARJAH, Oct 12 (PTI) Ricardo Powell, the young Jamaican cricketer whose knock of 124 against India in the Singapore Challenge Tournament was described by Sachin Tendulkar as one of the best innings he had ever seen, is the cynosure at the Sharjah tournament. Both Sri Lanka and Pakistan are planning strategies to contain the 20-year-old irrepressible hardhitter who packed eight sixes and nine fours off just 93 deliveries in that match at Singapore. I want to be the first Powell and not the Richards, he told the Gulf News I have no idols. I dont try to copy anyones style. It is too early to compare me with others. Right now runs are what matters to me, he said. I came up from school cricket, said Powell, a last minute inclusion in the West Indies team for the World Cup. His 306 not out in a match in 1997 till now remains a record in school cricket. The Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya said his team had discussed strategies how to counter the Jamaican hurricane. We have seen Powell on television, we have discussed how to counter him. But we cannot reveal what strategy we have worked out. Powell was selected for the World Cup in 1999 when Carl Hooper suddenly announced his retirement. But he did not get a chance to prove his prowess in England. He still cherishes the memories of his knock in Singapore. The tournament was very nice for me. I have to maintain my form. Lara and Lloyd (coach) have been of great help. It is a great honour to be playing with them. Sri Lanka is once again depending on pace bowler Chaminda Vaas to spearhead their attack. Jayasurya said Vaas had overcome his problems when he hit a low during the Aiwa Cup tournament. A short stint at the MRF Foundation in Chennai and Vaas is back to his best, he said. Lankans are a
rejuvenated team under the new coach Sri

Soccer star Lalas hangs his boots KANSAS CITY, (US), Oct 12 (Reuters) Defender Alexi Lalas, a key figure in the resurgence of international soccer in the USA and one of the first marquee players of major league soccer, announced his retirement on Saturday. Lalas, 29, made the announcement following Kansas Citys 1-0 loss to the Los Angeles Galaxy. This is simply a question of following my heart and thus makes it more difficult to explain to people why or how I came to this decision, Lalas said. At 29, I definitely feel that I could continue to play for some time, but this is not about age or ability. It is a personal choice and something that I feel is right at this moment in my life. Lalas was a starting defender for the USA in the 1994 World Cup when the American squad reached the second round for the first time since 1930 and the second time in six World Cup appearances. But the defender, easily recognisable by his long red hair and goatee, also was one of the problem players on the 1998 squad which had a disastrous showing in France and finished last in the 32-nation tournament. Lalas was one of the most outspoken critics of coach Steve Sampson after being benched following team USAs 2-0 loss in the first game of group play. Sampson was fired shortly thereafter but two-time Olympian Lalas has made few appearances for the national team under new coach Bruce Arena, who is preparing for 2002 World Cup qualifying. Lalas also is the only American player to appear during the modern era in the prestigious Italian soccer league, playing for Padova in the 1994-95 season and half of the 1995-96 campaign. He returned to the USA in 1996 and relentlessly served as a spokesman for the MLS, which continues to struggle to create a niche in his country. Alexi is what this league is all about being young, hip and in the now, MLS Commissioner Don Garber said. His presence was vital in the establishment of the league on the American sports landscape and his vibrant passion for the game on and off the field brought numerous fans to the sport. Lalas started his MLS career with the New England revolution and was traded to the metrostars after two seasons. Before the start of this season, he was traded with fellow 1994 World Cup starter and goalkeeper Tony Meola to the wizards. I was
shocked, Meola said after the game. His
timing wasnt the greatest, he is a big loss to the
team. At least we can tell our kids that we were part of
the biggest trade in MLS history. |
PP in last four MUMBAI, Oct 12 (UNI) Punjab Police today romped past holders Rail Coach Factory (RCF) of Kapurthala 3-1 and Bharat Petroleum edged out Central Railway 1-0 to enter the semifinals of the Gold Cup Hockey Tournament at the Mahindra Stadium. Veteran defender Jagdev, once notorious for his foul tactics, played a stellar role in the Punjab Police show with a sledgehammer corner hit for a goal and then going upfront to pave the way for Sarbjit to score the second goal. The goal which gave RCF the initial lead was a superb reverse hit by Lalit Lakra. Just before the hooter Daljit Dhillon showing his wonderful form scored the third goal. Bharat Petroleum had

Wessels quits 1st class cricket JOHANNESBURG, Oct 12 (AFP) Former South African cricket captain Kepler Wessels has retired from first class cricket, the Griqualand West Cricket Board announced yesterday. Wessels, 42, who has captained the Griquas team since last season, said lack of time and motivation had contributed to his decision. Off the field, there were a whole lot of factors which all contributed to the fact that I couldnt just concentrate on cricket, and I think if youre playing cricket at first class level, thats got to be your main focus, Wessels told public SABC radio. But that was no longer possible. Griquas general manager Brian Kidson said Wessels would not be lost to the province as he would remain on as cricket consultant to the board for the remainder of the season. Former South African national spin bowler Pat Symcox will take over the captaincy. Wessels, who started his Test career with Australia, returned to lead South Africa back into world cricket after more than two decades of apartheid-induced isolation. He captained South Africa in 13 Tests, drawing series with Australia and England, beating Sri Lanka and India and losing to the West Indies in a one-off Test and he led the team to the semifinals of the 1992 World Cup. He handed the captaincy of the national team to Hansie Cronje in December, 1994, and quit international cricket soon thereafter. Wessels continued to play for Eastern province, which in 1989 he had led to their first-ever Currie Cup victory after more than 100 years of existence, until the end of the 1997/98 season, when provincial authorities refused to renew his contract, citing the need for new blood. Wessels, a controversial
character who often crossed swords with cricketing
authorities, then joined provincial side Griquas,
captaining them to their first-ever trophy, the knockout

SAIs
invitation
to private sector PATIALA, Oct 12 Facing a financial crunch, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) has now formally invited industrial houses to come forward to adopt various disciplines and open sports academies in order to give a fillip to sports in the country. The private sector-financed academies which are running success fully in collaboration with SAI are the handball academy at Bhillai, sponsored by the Bhillai Steel Plant and the Mumbai based SAI hockey academy which is sponsored by Air-India. In a letter written by the SAI corporate office last week, apparently to rope in more industrial houses, SAI has made it clear that the sponsor can either build the requisite sports infrastructure and hostel facility with assistance from the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports (DYAS) or use the already available infrastructural facility being provided by SAI at its regional centres on time management basis. The trainees at these academies will be those with a proven track record in their respective disciplines in the 16-20 age group and scouted by SAI experts. The sponsors will be expected to run these academies in a professional manner with coaches provided by SAI. According to the letter written by the SAI head office, the recurring expenditure of running these academies, besides the board and lodging of the trainees, will be borne by the sponsor, while SAI will chip in with annual stipends to the trainees. According to SAI
sources, various sports bodies and private sector
enterprises have reacted positively and have shown
interest in this project of SAI. Prominent among them is
the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which
plans to open a cricket academy at Bangalore. The
proposal of the BCCI to open an academy in collaboration
with SAI, has already been given the nod in the
BCCIs annual general meeting held recently at

Pak coach set to take over ISLAMABAD, Oct 12 (Reuters) South Africa-based Richard Pybus has been appointed Pakistan cricket coach and will take over for a tour of Australia starting later this month, local media reported today. The news said British-born Pybus would begin his job after a tri-nation limited overs tournament between Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the West Indies in Sharjah starting tomorrow. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced earlier this month that current coach and former Test batsman Wasim Raja would step down after the Sharjah tournament to continue his career as a teacher in Britain. Yes, I am being appointed initially for a period of one year, and if the board thinks I have done enough to satisfy them, they could increase my tenure as coach, Pybus was quoted as saying. Pybus had a short-term contract as assistant to Mushtaq Mohammad for the World Cup in England last May and June when Pakistan reached the final. Raja replaced Mushtaq after the World Cup. Pybus spoke out strongly
in support of captain Wasim Akram after Pakistan came
under fire from media and supporters after losing the
Lords final to Australia by eight wickets, having
been bowled out for 132. |

Leipus to hold fitness tests SAS NAGAR, Oct 12 (PTI) Indian cricketers will be put through a series of tests to ascertain their fitness levels by Andrew Leipus, their new Australian physio-cum-trainer, as a first step to raise their athleticism and prevent the spate of injuries undermining the side. The 29-year-old Leipus
said his new job will be challenging mainly
owing to the hectic schedule of the Indian squad in the
coming months and that he will first chalk out the
programme with coach Kapil Dev before working on
individual players. There is lot of discrepancy as
to what type of training should be given to a cricketer.
Some say it should be strength and the others feel
endurance is the key. A good balance is needed,
Leipus said. |

Patiala 194 all out PATIALA, Oct 12 (FOSR) A flamboyant and crafty knock by opener Gaganinder Garry coupled with some useful innings by the hosts middle order enabled Patiala to pile up 194 all out against Chandigarh on day one of the Dhruv Pandove Cricket Tournament (u-19) played here today. With skipper Gaganinder Garry sealing up one end, the onus of building up a formidable total for Chandigarh to chase was on the hosts middle order which came good. However, the total could have been boosted significantly had the down the order batsmen not thrown away their wickets when most of them were duly set for a big innings. The most important gain for Patiala came in the last hour of the day when medium pacer Harikrishan Kali pitched the ball short and induced Chandigarhs hard hitting batsman Yuvraj Singh to pull the ball. Yuvraj swivelled his body to pull, but ended up ballooning it of his gloves to give wicketkeeper Anoop Kumar enough time to come under the ball to hold it safely. Scores: Patiala (first innings): 194 all out (G. Garry 64, H. Mandora 33, Rajeev Rinku 28, Sonpreet 24, Sanjay Dhull 4 for 47, Harit Sharma 2 for 30, Amit Uniyal 2 for 46).
