46 dead in mishap
SAN SALVADOR, Oct 12 (AFP) — The Salvadoran Transportation Ministry has called for prison for negligent drivers following a bus accident that killed at least 46 persons and injured several here. Witnesses reported the bus fell some 15 metres into a ravine in the Apopa municipality, 16 km north of San Salvador, early yesterday. The bus may have been travelling at excessive speed, the police said. The wounded, including some children, were transferred to local hospitals.

Sena leader dead
MUMBAI, Oct 12 (UNI) — Senior Shiv Sena leader and the party's first Member of Parliament Vamanrao Mahadik, fondly known as Appa, died of a kidney ailment at the KEM Hospital early this morning. He was 75. He is survived by his wife and six children. Mr Mahadik, who was also the party's first MLA, had been in the hospital since the past few days. The end came at 6.45 am today, sources at Dophar ka Saamna, the Sena mouthpiece, said. Mr Mahadik was among the founder members of the Shiv Sena along with Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray.

Sakshi Maharaj
LUCKNOW, Oct 12 (PTI) — Former BJP MP Sachchidanand Hari Sakshi, who campaigned extensively for the Samajwadi Party after being denied BJP nomination for the just-concluded Lok Sabha elections, today joined the party led by Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav along with his supporters. A former MP from Farrukhabad, Sakshi Maharaj, whose campaign is believed to have substantially improved the fortunes of the Samajwadi Party in western UP, said he had no "greed" for power and would work relentlessly for the welfare of backward communities.

NEW DELHI, Oct 12 (PTI) — The condition of former President S.D. Sharma, admitted to a private hospital here following breathing problem, "improved slightly" today but he continued to be on ventilator, hospital sources said. "Dr Sharma's blood pressure has been maintained at the same level as yesterday but he remains on ventilator (artificial respiration", the sources said. His condition is a bit better", they said.

24-hr curfew
HYDERABAD, Oct 12 (UNI) — A 24-hour curfew has been clamped on Ramakuppam mandal in Chittor district of Andhra Pradesh where two persons were killed in yesterday's police firing when a violent mob went on a rampage injuring 15 persons for being disallowed to play drums near a place of worship. DSP T.A. Tripati told UNI over phone from Ramakuppam that the curfew was in force since late last night.

BJP man killed
KANNUR, Oct 12 (PTI) — A BJP worker was killed and two others were seriously injured in a bomb attack allegedly by CPM activists at Ayithara in fresh outbreak of violence in the politically sensitive Kannur district of Kerala today, the police said. In an apparent retaliatory attack, two houses of CPM workers were set on fire and one of the inmates received severe burns.

First sea launch
WASHINGTON, Oct 12 (PTI) — The first ever sea-launching of a satellite has been successful with the 60-metre rocket lifting off from a converted offshore drilling platform in the Pacific Ocean. The communications satellite was launched at 8.58 pm local time on Saturday by the multinational Boeing Company from a site on the equator about 1,600 km south-east of Hawaii.

17 wagons derailed
CALCUTTA, Oct 12 (UNI) — Train services were disrupted when 17 loaded tank wagons derailed between Jamtara and Bodma stations blocking both up and down tracks of Eastern Railway's Asansol division today, according to an Eastern Railway press note here. The Amritsar Express (3049 Up), the Danapur Express (3231 Up), the Howrah-Delhi Janata Express (3039 Up) and the Lalquilla Express (3111 Up) were cancelled following the derailment. Besides, five trains were also rescheduled.

UDP’s new alliance
SHILLONG, Oct 12 (PTI) — Meghalaya Chief Minister B.B. Lyngdoh today led his party, the United Democratic Party (UDP), to break its 15-month-old alliance with Congress and formed a new coalition with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the BJP. Mr Lyngdoh would submit his resignation as Chief Minister of the UDP-Congress government to the Governor, Mr M.M. Jacob, tomorrow and also stake his claim for a new ministry, UDP President E.K. Mawlong told reporters at the end of a marathon meeting the UDP, NCP and BJP here tonight.

Nyerere ‘brain dead’
DAR ES SALAAM, Oct 12 (AFP) — Doctors treating Tenzania's founding President Julius Nyerere in London said he was now brain dead and was being kept alive by a life-support machine, a Tanzanian newspaper reported today. The Kiswahili language Mtanzania newspaper quoted unidentified doctors as saying that results of brain scans conducted last night on the 77-year-old Nyerere, showed his brain was not functioning and that he was unlikely to regain consciousness.
