Scheme launched:
To encourage the concept of higher education in rural areas, the State Bank of Patiala on Monday launched the Gyan Jyoti Scheme at Kalyan Sukha village near here. Mr O.P. Jindal, Divisional General Manager of the bank, said the bank would provide financial assistance to those interested in getting higher education. He also distributed prizes to 20 meritorious students of Government High School of the village.

FEROZEPORE
Condemned:
The President of the district unit of the All-India Rajiv Krantikari Congress, Mr Shyam Sunder, in a statement issued here on Monday strongly condemned the hike in the price of diesel. He said the hike would cause inflation in the prices of essential commodities and affect the poor the most.

Citizens Forum: A meeting of the local Citizens Forum was held here under the chairmanship of Mr G.S. Deva to discuss citizens' problems. The forum demanded improvement in the quality of drinking water, repair of roads, measures for the eradication of mosquitoes and shifting of wholesale cracker dealers out of the municipal limits.

LUDHIANA
Training course ends:
The Department of Agricultural Meteorology, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, conducted an advanced training course for teachers and scientists from October 1 to 10. Dr S.S. Hundal, Professor and Head, Department of Agriculture Meteorology, served as Director of the course. The course was inaugurated by Mr M.S.Bajwa, Dean, Post-Graduate Studies of the university and attended by 25 scientists who came from 17 different states of the country.

PATIALA
Release sought:
The Rashtriya Ekta Manch, Punjabi University, has expressed concern over the abduction of four Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) workers from North Tripura-based Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram by the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT). In a joint press statement, the manch President, Dr Baltej Singh Mann, and the Secretary, Dr Nashir Naqvi, said a delegation of the manch would seek the intervention of the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee for their release.

Honoured
: Punjabi writer Chot Jagatpuri was honoured by the Palahi and Phagwara Lekhak Sabhas here on Tuesday. Mr Davinder Singh Sra, Vice-President, Palahi Lekhak Sabha, presented a memento and a scroll to him at a felicitation function.

Demanded: The Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar Welfare Society here on Tuesday demanded adequate sanitation measures for the locality for keeping seasonal diseases at bay. A spokesman for the society asked the authorities to place bins for garbage and spray anti-mosquito oil.

SANGRUR
New Sessions Judge
: Mr R.M. Gupta has taken over as the District and Sessions Judge here. Addressing members of the Sangrur Bar Association, he urged them not to resort to strikes as it causes inconvenience to litigants. Mr Hakim Singh Jawanda, President of the association, demanded a five-day working week in the courts.

AMBALA
Workshop:
The NSS unit of the local S.D. College organised a 10-day workshop on "Role of the Youth for a Healthy Society". Mr A.D. Gandhi, General Secretary of the Haryana Chamber of Commerce and Industry, inaugurated the workshop and urged the students to follow the teachings of the great reformers. The Principal of the college, Dr Desh Bandhu, also addressed the students.

Killed: One person was killed in a road accident on Sunday near Naraingarh, 30 km from here. According to police sources, he was hit by an unknown vehicle. The police has registered a case.

Quiz contest:
The Dr Raj Kumar Verma memorial third annual inter-school quiz contest was organised at Sen Vidya Mandir here on Monday. Teams from several schools in the town participated in the contest. Mr Vijender Kumar, Additional Deputy Commissioner, presided over the function. Sant Baba Maan Singh of Pehowa was the chief guest.

Maharaja Aggarsain Jayanti: A 'shobha yatra' was organised here on Monday on the occasion of the Maharaja Aggarsain Jayanti. A large number of members of the Aggarwal community and others participated in the procession. Mr N. Lal Bansal, President of the Beopar Cell, inaugurated a charitable homoeopathic dispensary at Aggarsain Chowk.

Murdered: Karam Veer and Chander of Taloda Kheri village of Jind district were allegedly murdered at Bhan Pura village, near here, on Saturday by Ram Mehar and Kashmir, both residents of Bhan Pura. According to a delayed report, the victims had come to Bhan Pura to meet the sister of one of the victims. The police has registered a case.

Appointed: The President of the district unit of the Bajrang Dal, Mr S.C. Singhal, has appointed Mr Suresh Sharma (Deora) as convener and Mr Ashok Goel as joint convener of the unit.

Condemned
: Rao Narender Singh, MLA from the Ateli constituency, has condemned the decision of the government to shift the Co-operative Bank branch from Rata Kalan to Dongra village. He has urged the Chief Minister to intervene in the matter and get the branch transferred back to Rata Kalan.

ROHTAK
Robbery
: A gang of robbers broke into a house at Sampla town, about 25 km from here, on Sunday and decamped with valuables worth about Rs 7,000. According to police sources, the robbers struck at night when the inmates of the house were asleep. Meanwhile, in another incident, a Maruti car was stolen from Bahadurgarh town on Monday night while it was parked outside a house. The police has registered cases in both incidents.

Traffic blocked: Residents of Dulhera village of Jhajjar district blocked the traffic on the Jhajjar-Bahadurgarh road for several hours on Tuesday in protest against the short supply of drinking water and power. According to reports, a few hundred residents blocked the road from 7 a.m. by parking their vehicles and squatting on the road to lodge their protest and to demand regular supply of power and water.

New Deputy Commissioner
: Mr Sudhir Rajpal took over as the Deputy Commissioner here on Monday in place of Mr Anil Kumar. According to official sources, Mr K.P. Singh took charge as the Superintendent of Police here on Monday. Meanwhile, Mr K. Selvraj, Senior Superintendent of Police here, has been transferred to Chandigarh as the SSP (Crime). Mr Ashok Saini, DSP, Gohana, has been transferred and Mr Anil Dhawan has taken over as the new DSP in his place. Mr Rajpal Singh has taken over as the DSP, Ganaur, in place of Mr Abhey Singh Rao.

Injured: Sukhbir Singh, an employee of the Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam, sustained burn injuries while he was working on a transmission line at Rattan Garh village, about 10 km from here, on Monday. He was rushed to the local Civil Hospital where he was stated to be out of danger.

Eye camp: As many as 75 cataract operations were performed and 300 other patients suffering from various eye diseases treated and given free medicines by Dr B.N. Khanna, a Delhi eye surgeon, at a five-day eye operation camp organised here by a local cycle manufacturing unit. The camp concluded on Monday. According to Mr I.D. Chugh, factory manager at the unit, this was the 32nd free eye operation camp organised by the company.

Injured: A scooterist was seriously injured when he rammed into a bicycle on the Sonepat-Murthal road, near here, on Monday. He was immediately hospitalised and was identified as Mehar Singh.

Procession: Members of the Republican Party of India took out a procession here on Monday in protest against the abolition of reservation in higher education for students belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in Haryana. Carrying placards and raising anti-government slogans, they marched through the main bazars and submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner for forwarding to the President of India.

Phones services paralysed: Telephone services in the villages of Bahalgarh, Deepalpur and Muqimpur have been paralysed for the past week on account of a technical fault in the Khewra telephone exchange in the district.top

Exhibition:
The Minister for Cooperation, Mr Rikhi Ram Koundal, on Monday inaugurated an exhibition-cum-sale organised by the Himachal Pradesh Handloom and Handicrafts Weavers Apex Cooperative Society, Kulu, at Hotel Jawalaji here. The society has organised the exhibition in collaboration with the Development Commissioner, Handlooms, Ministry of Textiles. The exhibition will continue till October 19.

KANGRA
Ambulance donated:
The Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee General Secretary and sitting MLA from Nagrota Bagwan, Mr G.S. Bali, on Sunday donated an ambulance to the Primary Health Centre at Baroh village in the Changer belt of his constituency. He donated the vehicle on the occasion of the inauguration of a one-day medical camp organised by the local Rotary Club at the village.

: The following have been elected as office-bearers of the district unit of the Himachal Pradesh Ayurvedic Chikitsak Parishad: President — Dr Prem Bhardwaj; Vice-President — Dr Mast Ram; Secretary — Dr Kabir Thakur; and Treasurer — Dr Jagdish Sharma.

MANDI
Workshop:
Speaking at a workshop on the use of hydraulic excavators and heavy earth-moving and construction equipment, Mr R. Ramani, representative of Larsen and Toubro Ltd, said here on Monday that the use of latest equipment in the construction of roads, buildings and hydel power projects in the state had shortened the time of construction, thereby improving economy. He said over 100 machines were at work here and in Kulu districts where Larji and Malana hydle projects were in an advanced state of construction. Over 80 private engineers and contractors attended the workshop where the functioning of the hydraulic excavators and other machines was also demonstrated.
