Haryana names gurdwara panellists

In spite of growing tension between the Centre and the Haryana Government over the constitution of a separate Sikh body to manage the affairs of Haryana gurdwaras, the state government today went ahead and nominated 41 persons as members of the ad hoc Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee.

India today agreed to hold with Pakistan the foreign secretary-level talks in Islamabad on August 25 even as New Delhi unambiguously told the neighbouring country that meaningful bilateral cooperation could not take place amid "violence and the sound of bullets".

47 killed as plane crashes in Taiwan
Taipei, July 23
A TransAsia Airways plane crashed on its second attempt at landing during a thunderstorm on an island off Taiwan on Wednesday, killing 47 people and setting buildings on fire. The plane, a 70-seat ATR 72, crashed near the runway on the island of Penghu, west of the mainland, with 54 passengers and four crew on board, officials said. No one was killed or hurt in the buildings.
