SC sends Sahara boss to Tihar
Roy in judicial custody till March 11; told to come up with payback plan
New Delhi, March 4
The Supreme Court today sent Sahara chief Subrata Roy and two directors of the group to judicial custody till March 11 for non-compliance of its orders for returning about Rs 20,000 crore to the investors through market regulator SEBI. A Bench comprising Justices KS Radhakrishnan and Jagdish Singh Khehar, however, spared a woman director Vandana Bhargava from the ignominy of going to jail.

Punjab Cabinet approves Backward Class quota for Jats
Chandigarh, March 4
The Punjab Cabinet tonight decided to include Jats in the Backward Classes category. With this, Jats will be the 69th community to be included in the category. Former Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh had attacked the Badal government for not taking up the Jat quota issue with the Centre. Consequently, Jats from Punjab were not included in the recently declared Central OBC quota list, he said.

Hooda govt rushes to clear Bills
16 passed in less than 2 hrs on last day of session
Chandigarh, March 4
On the last day of its Budget session, the Haryana Vidhan Sabha rushed through 16 Bills in just an hour and 45 minutes with the members spending about six minutes by discussion on each Bill. Being the last Assembly session of the Hooda government before the elections, the government had lined up several Bills as part of its “sop opera” to beat anti-incumbency ahead of the Lok Sabha poll.

J-K panchayats to get more powers as House clears Bill
Jammu, March 4
The Jammu and Kashmir Government on Tuesday passed a Bill in the Legislative Assembly to amend the state Panchayati Raj Act of 1989 so as to incorporate relevant clauses of the 73rd Amendment to the Indian Constitution. (Details on J&K page)

Himachal to restrict red beacon from March 10
Shimla, March 4
The Himachal Government has decided to strictly enforce the Supreme Court directive on the use of red and blue beacons atop government vehicles in the hill state. Only constitutional authorities will now be entitled to use the facility. Sources said the state Cabinet today decided to meet the March 10 deadline set by the Supreme Court for the enforcement of the guidelines. (Details on Himachal page)

US declares $1 billion aid for troubled Ukraine
