Burglars on the prowl in city areas
Decamp with 45-tola gold, cash worth lakhs from two houses in Jatpura Mohalla
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, March 4
Burglars seem to be on the prowl in Jalandhar, as two houses were burgled in Jatpura Mohalla last night.

The miscreants decamped with gold, silver and cash worth several lakhs from the houses. Dog squad teams and finger-print experts were pressed into service to gather clues from the spot.

Interestingly, in one of the incidents, before committing the crime, miscreants had first locked the family members inside the room and later decamped with valuables.

The first burglary was reported at the house of Yaspal, a retired government employee, at Jatpura Mohalla near Balmiki Gate. Kapil, a relative of Yaspal, said all family members had gone to Jamsher to meet their relatives last night and when they came back, they were stunned to see the broken locks. We were away to Jamsher and were informed by our neighbours that locks of the house were lying broken. When we came back, we were stunned to see the ransacked house, he added.

The victims said burglars had decamped with 40-tola gold, Rs 55,000 and some other important documents lying in the almirah.

The second incident was reported in the same locality in which burglars struck at the house of Somnath Kalia and decamped with 5-tola gold and Rs 19,000 from the house. They also took away certain important documents. The thieves first locked the family members inside their room and later ransacked the whole house. The family came to know about the incident when it woke up in the morning
and found itself locked inside the room.

As two burglaries were reported in the same locality in a night, the police were suspecting the role of a single gang behind the crime.

A case was registered against unknown miscreants at division No. 2 police station. A police official said houses were situated in a congested street and there seemed remote possibility of burglary in the congested street, adding that the police were probing the case from all angles.

Dist administration misuses langar to feed govt employees
Rachna Khaira
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, March 4
The hunger for power has brought the state government to the community kitchen of a local gurdwara from where it was reportedly serving langar to around 600 employees deputed to make priority cards for beneficiaries under the new "atta-daal" scheme.

To start the scheme before the implementation of the model code of conduct, the district administration has deputed around 600 employees from various departments since February 27 to make the pending 30,000 cards in the district.

In all these six days, to save money, the lunch for these employees, placed at Red Cross Bhawan and the Municipal Corporation office, was being provided from the community kitchen of the gurdwara.

"We are getting lunch from the community kitchen of a local gurdwara sahib. On the first day, the langar was served to around 600 employees who were deputed to make the priority card. On the second day, it was catered for 200 people. From next day onwards, it is being served to around 100 people everyday," said an employee from the District Coordination team. He also said that langar comes in gurdwara utensils and was being served here in disposable plates.

The gurdwara administration also confirmed that the langar was being served outside the gurdwaras for the past six days. "We have received directions from Tehsildar sahib to provide food at various locations. As the gurdwara is under the district administration, we have to cater to their demands," said Gurvariam Singh, manager of the gurdwara. However, Seema Singh, Tehsildar I, refuted the charges, but also failed to give a convincing reply on the food arrangements made for the staff deputed to make priority cards.

Many people have condemned the move of the district administration to use langar for political interests. "Nothing can be more degrading than this. Langar is not supposed to be served outside the Gurdwara Sahib and with bare heads. Langar can be packed only for small children and old people who cannot visit the Gurdwara Sahib for various reasons. Here, it is getting served to employees on duty just to save the administration's money. We condemn this," said Atam Prakash Singh, president, Gurdwara Model Town.

Many other Sikh organisations also condemned the misuse of the community kitchen by the district administration. "The gurdwara, being under the district administration, does not mean that they can use its resources for government purposes. Since the employees were doing government job, the administration should have provided them lunch from outside and not on the premises of the gurdwara where people donate in the name of God. This is clearly misuse of the devotees' money," said Jagjit Singh Gaba, president, Gurudwara Nauvi Patshahi, Dukh Niwaran Sahib.

Meanwhile, the gurdwara in question is known to fulfil the desire of the people willing to fly and settle abroad. Lakhs of devotees visit the place very year. The gurdwara is also known to have many "swaroops" of Guru Granth Sahib placed together.

Trauma Centre reopens
Rachna Khaira
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, March 4
The Civil Hospital today reopened its Trauma Centre to the general public after Jalandhar Tribune reported the matter to the higher authorities at Punjab Health System Corporation (PHSC) last evening.

The centre was closed following the indefinite strike of the contractual staff of the trauma centre for the past six days.

“The centre was briefly locked, as we do not have adequate security guards with us. Since the whole staff was on strike, we do not have anybody to take care of the trauma centre in the evening, so we had to lock it. But it was opened in the morning after the regular staff from the Civil Hospital took charge of the trauma services,” said Dr Jagjit Singh Cheema, Medical Superintendent, Civil Hospital.

He also said that the civil authorities were facing a lot of difficulty due to the strike by the trauma centre employees. Last week, all taps of the centre were stolen by unidentified persons. We immediately installed new taps at the centre which were again stolen two days ago. Since we do not have a security guard for the centre, we were left with no option but to lock it in the absence of its staff,” said Dr Cheema. He said due to the shortage of funds, there were only 16 security guards which are quite inadequate for the biggest government hospital in Punjab.

Trauma services have been classified as essential services by the World Health organisation (WHO) under the Road Safety Act that should be made available 24x7 to the general public. Locking the centre was a clear violation of the Act.

With the timely reporting of the matter to the higher authorities at PHSC and the Department of Health and family Welfare, the centre was soon opened after forming a medical team from the Civil Hospital to run the trauma services. On Tuesday alone, nine emergency cases were reported at the centre, out of which four were of serious nature and are still under observation at the centre. "Since the entire staff of the trauma centre is on strike, the medical team of the hospital will run the trauma centre till further arrangements,” confirmed Dr Cheema.

Lawyers’ strike enters its second day
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, March 4
The District Bar Association (DBA) and the Nakodar Bar Association members today continued with their strike and observed "no work day" against the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court for clearing the backlog of cases which have been lying pending with the court for the past over 10 and five years.

Mandeep Sachdev, president, District Bar Association (DBA), said lawyers had observed "no work day" for the second consecutive day against the direction of the High Court.

Lawyers across the state would decide their further course of action after holding the final meeting at Chandigarh this evening.

Piyush Gupta of the Nakodar Bar Association said the High Court had recently passed directions that all types of cases, including civil and criminal which have been lying pending with the courts for the past over 10 years and five years, must be disposed of before March 31 and May 31 this year, respectively.

It is pertinent to mention here that after the directions of the High Court, courts are holding day-to-day hearings in all cases to clear the backlog before the specified dates.

Speaking on the occasion, lawyers demanded that the High Court should consider the demands of the lawyers and reconsider its decision of disposing of all 10 and five-year-old cases before March and May, respectively.

After the directions of the High Court, local courts have also told lawyers to speed up case proceedings to meet the High Court’s deadline.

Lawyers alleged that due to the directions of the High Court, they were forced to present all cases before local courts in a haste. They felt that the High Court should extend the deadline so that lawyers could present clear and detailed facts about all civil and criminal cases before local courts.

Jalandhar, March 4
The roads around the Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh Inter-state Bus Terminal, Jalandhar, are in a dilapidated condition since its inception. It seems that the authority concerned have never bothered to repair these roads as all the roads leading to the bus stand have potholes.

The situation is such that the road in front of the Punjab State War Memorial turns into a pool of muddy water even after mild shower in the city. Therefore, it is difficult to judge like where exactly the road is, which increases the chances of accident. Apart from this, the roads at the backside of bus stand that lead to Cool Road, Garha Road and Model Town area are terrible. Their is dust in the area when it is not raining, when it is raining thier is sludge making it difficult for people to walk.

As the Municipal Corporation Jalandhar (MCJ) pays no heed to the issue, not only it bring a bad name to the city but invites accidents.

Taking to The Tribune, people who have shops or stalls around the road said the roads have been in the same miserable condition since long. But nothing has been done so far.

"We never complained to the MCJ, thinking that it will not make any difference as they are all aware of the reality," said an elderly person.

Harjinder Singh, who gave up charge today as General Manager 1 because of his transfer to Amritsar said they have written to the MCJ several times about the condition of the road as it is an accident prone area, yet, nothing has been done so far.

When contacted, MS Chattwal, MCJ Commissioner, asked the correspondent to call later as he was busy in meeting but never answered the call afterwards.

However, Sunil Jyoti, the MCJ Mayor said, "The work on the road around the bus stand is expected start soon. Apart from this, we have plans to widen the roads at the backside of the bus stand, which would start soon."
