Vardhan tells MLAs to be ready for snap polls
New Delhi, December 27 He also urged the MLAs to continue their links with the people in their constituencies in much the same way as they did before the December 4 election. They should also ensure that the news of their good work reaches the neighbouring constituencies. Addressing a conference after a meeting with BJP MLAs, Vardhan said, "The whole idea of a party professing clean politics and then aligning with the most corrupt party in history is ridiculous. It will collapse under its own contradictions." Vardhan said the BJP would play the role of an aggressive and public welfare-minded opposition in the assembly. The party will examine the decisions taken by the government on merit and form appropriate strategy. BJP wants that the people of Delhi should get rid of price spiral, corruption and misgovernance. The BJP legislators will thus unitedly force the government to take people-friendly decisions. He has demanded that the head of the new government should order a high level enquiry into the bungling committed during the Sheila Dikshit regime. Vardhan has list many scams during her tenure such as those in Commonwealth Games, Yamuna, DTC bus purchase, unauthorized colonies, power, DJB, etc. Welcoming the new government, Vardhan said he hoped that it would fulfil the promises made to the people of Delhi within a fixed timeframe. Delhi is the Capital of India, but it has not been given the status of a full-fledged state so far even as there were Congress governments both at the Centre and Delhi. The BJP wants that the new government should get full statehood for Delhi so that the decisions for development and public welfare may be taken at the state level, he said. Vardhan said, "We are the single largest formation, but we did not make an attempt to form the government. We will expose the chicanery of AAP-Congress before the people thoroughly and soon come to power with an overwhelming mandate." |
BJP gears up for parliamentary polls
New Delhi, December 27 Addressing a press conference, Delhi BJP chief Vijay Goel said, "The objective of launching the poll campaign early is to take the party message to every household, 'Vote for Modi, Vote for strong India'." Enlisting the initiatives taken for election preparations, Goel said that the focus would be on special campaign kits highlighting Gujarat's development model, social media campaign, workers' conferences, special membership drive, 'Mahila Sammelans' and 'Yuva Sammelans', etc. A 'Chintan Shivir' will be held in early January to discuss the future course of action, he said. Goel said, "The BJP is a cadre-based party. Its cadres are its biggest strength. They are highly motivated and fully prepared for the poll battle ahead. We are expanding our base further. We are also identifying the gap areas where we need to strengthen our organisational network." The BJP is also holding its 'Abhinandan Rally' at Talkatora Stdium tomorrow to express its gratitude to the people of Delhi for their support. |

LG orders rehab of people left shelterless
New Delhi, December 27 The Indian Railways personnel carried out the demolition drive yesterday morning to free the railway land from 'encroachers'. Around 175 houses were demolished leaving 900 people homeless, which included 500 children and 250 of them were aged three or below. The LG has asked the Chief Executive Officer of the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board to arrange for the 'immediate rehabilitation' of the people left homeless. According to workers of NGO, Humana People to People India, who reached the venue, over 900 families were rendered homeless in an encroachment removal initiative by the Indian Railways 'without any prior notice'. Among the many others was Sonia, whose shelter was razed a few hours after she gave birth to her baby. Shivering and hungry by nightfall, the people burnt leftover items to light up fire in order to spend the night. Kakhua Devi (31) who has a two-month-old baby spent the entire night in the freezing cold. "At around 10 am yesterday, four JCB machines reached and without giving us any time, they started demolishing homes. All our household things and blankets got destroyed and we spent the night without shelter with my two-month-old baby," she said. Santari Devi (55), who had received her Aadhar card at the hands of the former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, called the government's action as highly insensitive. "It was so insensitive on their part to demolish our jhuggis where we have been living for the past so many years. Now we are out in the open in this freezing cold. Where should we go," she said. The Chief Executive Officer of the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB), Amar Nath, said that there are two night shelter homes set up by the board in 2010--one for the men and the other for women, which are inadequate to accommodate so many people. "The two shelter homes can accommodate around 100 people. For the time being as per the LG's order we are providing immediate relief materials like blankets and tents to the people. But in the long term, we have to plan out something," he said. |
Man slits wrist during Kejriwal's 'public hearing'
New Delhi, December 27 The incident took place outside the AAP office in Kaushambi here when Kejriwal, who will become Delhi's Chief Minister tomorrow, was holding a 'Janata Durbar' or public hearing for the third straight day. Suddenly, the man, identified as Ahmed Zamil, stood up and slit his wrist with a blade. He said that just as Subhash Chandra Bose had asked people to donate blood in return for freedom, he was doing likewise for Kejriwal, who he claimed would rid India of corruption. |
Free water supply to benefit the affluent more
New Delhi, December 27 Well-off people do not use water for drinking only. They use it for washing vehicles, gardening as well as cleaning their courtyard every day, the official said. He said once the founder leader of AAP takes oath, he will become the Chairperson of the Delhi Jal Board and its officials will obey his orders. Another sore point is that Delhi does not have sufficient water. It gets raw water from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh and the process to make it drinkable is costly. Tariff is fixed to recover its cost. When the supply connection is given to a new locality, the board has to first lay the pipelines which prove to be quite costly. At present, the board supplies 835 MGD water every day, but a large number of localities in the Capital do not have a Jal Board connection. They depend either on ground water or private tankers. |
Cold may trigger fatal heart attacks
New Delhi, December 27 According to cardiologist Dr Purshotam Lal, the director of Metro Hospitals and Heart Institute, as the temperature falls, risk of heart attack may rise, especially among the elderly and those with a history of cardiac problems. "Protecting your heart is always important, but people with a history of heart problems are particularly at risk in cold weather. People should wear something that covers nose and mouth as cold air can get into the body, and it constricts the blood vessels and airways," said Dr Lal. "Usually it's those over 60 who are prone to heart attack and stroke during winters. In such cases, the common risk factor is hypertension. There will be chances of loss of consciousness, brain hemorrhage and even fits, severe chest pain associated with perspiration, weakness and breathlessness. The immunity level decreases at such age and these age groups become vulnerable in winter," he said. Children, the elderly and those with heart disease are at risk. As people age, their ability to maintain a normal internal body temperature often decreases. Because elderly people seem to be relatively insensitive to moderately cold conditions, they can suffer hypothermia without knowing that they're in danger, said Dr Lal. Hypothermia means that the body temperature has fallen below 95 degree Fahrenheit. It occurs when your body can't produce enough energy to keep the internal body temperature warm enough. Heart failure causes most deaths in hypothermia. Symptoms include lack of coordination, mental confusion, slowed reactions, shivering and sleepiness. According to Dr Lal, people with coronary heart disease often suffer angina pectoris (chest pain or discomfort) when they're in cold weather. Some studies suggest that harsh winter weather may increase a person's risk of heart attack due to overexertion. Similarly cases of respiratory tract infections have also increased this season. "The number of people reporting respiratory infections in the city's hospitals has increased by 20 per cent. There are many patients who are visiting the hospitals with complaints of cold, cough and sore throat. Incidence of such cases are reported every day in the OPD," said Dr Rakesh Kumar, senior consultant, internal medicine, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi. "Asthma patients are more vulnerable to viral diseases. They should avoid breathing in fog in the morning and evening,” said Dr Kumar. |

New Delhi, December 27 The tunnel, which runs along the entire length of the Connaught Place's Middle Circle, acts as service corridor, housing electricity and communication cables, water supply and irrigation lines, firefighting services, and electricity sub-stations catering to the area.
