EC’s drive to enrol new voters
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, December 17
The Delhi Chief Electoral Office has started the drive to enrol new voters in the national Capital in all 70 Assembly constituencies.

Though, the political deadlock in Delhi is most likely to take it towards re-election, as no single party has managed to get a clear mandate, senior official of the electoral office said that the revision is being done as part of its annual exercise.

"Summary revision is a part of continuous updating of electoral rolls," said senior official of the Chief Electoral Office (CEO).

During the revision, people can file their claims, check their names in the rolls and apply for voter identity cards.

"People who want to enrol themselves in the electoral list can apply by filling up the form No. 6 either by taking it from the office of the Chief Electoral Office or filling it online," said Ankur Garg, the chief nodal officer of Delhi.

He said that the voters, who are already on the electoral list, can check the rolls and apply for any changes to be made in their names, address or any other data if required. "This will give a major boost to the voting turnout, if re-elections are held," he said. The drive started on December 16 and will last for 15 days.

During the drive, people can enrol themselves, check electoral roll and can apply for addition, deletion, correction or shifting within or other constituency.

"During summary revision, camps at various places will be conducted by the Election Office where people can clear their objections and claims. The camps will help in rectifying mistakes, if any, in their voter ID cards and will help resolve other related disputes. People can also apply for their fresh voter ID cards," he said.

Last summery revision by the Election Office had seen an addition of a total of 4,65,527 new names to the list, of which 2,40,456 were males and 2,25,071 were females.

The sex ratio of voters in Delhi is 803 females per thousand males. Areas like Okhla, Sangam Vihar, Tughlakabad, Chhattarpur and Badarpur constituencies have least sex ratio of voter.

In Tughlakabad, there are only 640 women per thousand men.

BJP gears up for re-election
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, December 17
The BJP today asked its MLAs and party activists to start working for re-elections for the Delhi Assembly as there was little chance of new government formation.

In election core group meeting that was attended by the Delhi election in charge, Nitin Gadkari, co in charge Navjot Singh Sidhu, Vijay Kumar Malhotra and other senior leaders, it was decided that party should gear up for re-election as it appeared that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was not serious to form the government.

Delhi BJP chief Vijay Goel said that the BJP was ready for another round of the assembly polls even though these polls had been forced upon Delhi by the AAP which refused to form the government due to the fear of getting exposed.

"The BJP did not have the required numbers so we could not form the government. But the Congress had given unconditional support to the AAP, but it still did not form the government," said Goel.

Gadkari said that the BJP had emerged as the single largest party and the first choice of the people of Delhi. The party cadres need to work even harder now to fulfil the aspirations of the Delhiites. If elections are held again, the BJP will emerge much stronger with a clear majority.

The party has decided to go back to the people through a three-pronged strategy i.e. door-to-door campaign, public meetings and social media campaign. The BJP cadres would communicate to the people as to how AAP's non-serious approach has forced another election upon Delhiites and how the BJP has been fighting against misrule of the Congress for the past 15 years and hence it is the most feasible and viable alternative, said Goel.

"Party cadres and leaders will organise victory rally on the assembly seats on which we have won while there will be thanksgiving rallies on seats where we have lost," he added.

Four held for duping people of Rs 562 crore
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, December 17
The Economic Offences Wing of the Crime Branch, the Delhi Police today claimed to have busted a gang of conmen and cheat who had, so far, cheated over two lakh people of Rs 562 crore and brought four accused on police remand from Ahmedabad Jail.

The accused have been identified as Ashok Jadeja, Parveen Popat, Khimji Bhai Jadeja and Kesha Ram all from Ahmdabad.

According to the police, the prime accused, Ashok Jedaja, misrepresented to the one particular community that he had been blessed with spiritual power of Sikodar Mata deity (revered by the community) which conferred on him the capacity to triplicate money within three days initially and subsequently it was enhanced to 25 to 30 days.

People of the community all over India were induced to offer large sums in the name of the deity as "offered money" which was to be multiplied to three times. Ashok constituted a body of members and agents to collect the maximum amount from maximum members of the society from all over India purportedly for the uplift of the status of the society.

Due to false representations and faith in caste and religion, many people of Delhi fell prey to this elaborate deception and offered all they had in the hope of tripling their money. So far, more than 2,800 complaints have been received from Delhi, involving an amount of over Rs 25 crore. One accused, Basant Lal has already been arrested in the case.

The accused were produced in a Delhi court on a production warrant and are now on police remand in the Economic Offensive Wing.

Digital library for visually impaired launched
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, December 17
Here is a reason to cheer for the visually challenged students as a new initiative to ensure an equitable digital space to upgrade their technical skills and advanced learning though has been announced in the capital.

"Your Voice, Their World" - a project to create India's largest accessible digital library for the visually impaired, launched today, is a collaborative effort of Omron Group in India, part of Omron Japan, a company with a global presence in automation technology and the National Association for the Blind (NAB), Delhi.

The project aspires to extend support to strengthen "accessible content", infrastructure and tailor-made technology in an attempt to empower such students by enabling them to fulfil their dreams of basic and advanced education.

It would cater to nearly 2,000 members of NAB Delhi library and around 10,000 through institutional members all over India (school and college students, job seekers, employed), apart from 250 students of NAB.

According to the architects of the programme, this would bridge the digital divide by encouraging visually impaired to pursue science and math education and professional courses that otherwise are not that preferred due to lack of accessibility.

The project in line with the regular curriculum (encompassing CBSE, ICSE and other state boards of education) will take up special initiatives to create books on science subjects and competitive exams - one more step towards opening new avenues for visually impaired.

Joint secretary of NAB Prashant Ranjan Verma said: "NAB is the first organisation to start production of Digital Talking Books in India and South Asia in 2003. We have been making few DAISY books with our limited infrastructure. Now, with support from Omron, we shall be able to take this pioneering initiative to the next level by producing more books and to fulfil education needs of a large number of visually impaired students."
