Cong protests 'tainted' ministers in Gujarat
New Delhi, December 26 The protest was jointly held by the leaders of Delhi Congress frontal organizations, including Youth Congress, Mahila Congress, National Students Union of India and Seva Dal. Demanding removal of corrupt ministers from the Gujarat government, Congress leaders campaigned against BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi. Congress leaders said that if he is made the Prime Minister, the country will be riddled with scandals. The demonstration started from the old Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee office at Talkatora Road, and passed through Mahadeva Road before heading towards Rajnath Singh's residence. "Babulal Bokhiria, who is the Water Resources Minister in the BJP Government in Gujarat, has been caught in a Rs 55-crore corruption scandal, while another minister, Purushottam Solanki, who was involved in the Mumbai riots, has been caught in a Rs 400-crore fishing scandal," said one of the presidents of frontal organizations. Taking a dig at BJP over the issue of corruption, Congress named a series of BJP leaders accused of bribery. "MLA Dino Bhai Boga Solanki has been arrested by the CBI for the murder of an RTI activist; former BJP president Bangaru Laxman had been caught taking a bribe of Rs 1 lakh; Y. Sapangi, BJP MLA from Karnataka, has been sentenced to three and half years of jail term by the Lokayukt court; former Karnataka BJP Government Minister Katta Sabarmanya Naidu has also been caught in corruption, as also others like BJP MLAs Manoj Pradhan, Ramesh Saxena, Raj Khurana and ex-MLA Dhruv Bhagat," he said. While Modi was talking of eradicating corruption from the country, these ministers were part of his ministerial team in Gujarat, he said it was very surprising that while the BJP was projecting Narendra Modi as the prime ministerial candidate, his ministers were engaged in corruption. |
Delhi Secretariat wears a deserted look
New Delhi, December 26 The staff attached to the former ministers pass their time in gossip while waiting for their new bosses. The swearing-in ceremony will take place on September 28 thereafter the ministers will come to their offices and the business will start again, said an official. There is much anxiety about the new bosses as all the ministers, including the Chief Minister, are first-timers. They have to spend a few months in order to understand the functioning of the government. During this time, they will remain busy in comprehending the official records and files, the official said. He said that preparations are in full swing to greet the new ministers. While the Chief Secretary, D. M.
Sapolia, and the staff of General Administration Department are preparing for the oath ceremony at Ramlila
Maidan, other officials are doing up the offices of ministers. All the nameplates of former ministers have been removed. Doors have been polished and kept locked. Nameplates of ministers could not be prepared as their portfolios have not yet been announced. The Chief Minister's office located on the third floor of the Secretariat looks deserted. Sources said that the secretaries attached to the former ministers have been transferred though they still come to the office. They may leave after the new ministers join duty. In their absence, the ministers may face difficulties in understanding the work. |

Ex-NSUI prez quits Cong, may join AAP
New Delhi, December 26 "I have heard her name for the first time. Who is
she?," was the curt response of Congress leader and Union Minister
Beni Prasad Verma. He said that while there is a scramble for tickets
in Congress, "the party (AAP) which you are naming has opened all
its door and windows (for ticket seekers)", suggesting that Lamba
might be going there as she was not given a ticket in Congress. AAP
leader Yogendra Yadav said, "Alka Lamba and a few members of other
parties, including BJP, today came to meet the party leaders. It was
made clear to them that anyone is welcome in the party as a
volunteer." Lamba, a former president of Delhi University Students
Union (DUSU), was appointed the general secretary of All India Mahila
Congress in 2002. She was also the former secretary of All India
Congress Committee and had also served as the general secretary of Delhi
Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC). Lamba had joined NSUI in 1994 and
won the DUSU election for the post of president in 1995. In 2003, she
unsuccessfully contested Delhi Assembly polls from Moti Nagar
constituency against BJP leader Madan Lal Khurana. "After losing
the election from Motinagar by a margin of around 25,000 votes, she
wanted to contest the civic body polls as well Assembly polls later on
but the party did not give her a ticket. She had not been holding any
party post for a long time," said a Congress party leader. |

CNG hiked by Rs 4.50 per kg
New Delhi, December 26 The price of compressed natural gas (CNG) in the national Capital was hiked by Rs 4.50 per kg, the second increase in rates in three months. Also, the price of cooking gas piped to kitchens has been increased by Rs 5.15 per kg with effect from Thursday midnight. CNG will cost Rs 50.10 per kg in Delhi and Rs 56.70 per kg in Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad from Thursday midnight, Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) said. However, this increase would not have a major impact on the per km running cost of vehicles. For autos, the increase would be 13 paisa per km, for taxi it would be 22 paisa per km and in case of buses, the increase would be Rs 1.30 per km, which translates to just over two paisa per passenger - km. The price of piped natural gas (PNG) to the households in Delhi is being revised from Rs 27.50 per standard cubic metre to Rs 29.50 per scm up to consumption of 30 scm in two months. Beyond consumption of 30 scm in two months, the applicable rate in Delhi would be Rs 52 per scm. Explaining the compulsions leading to the revision in the prices, the official spokesperson of IGL said, "There has been a reduction in allocation of APM gas to us, which is forcing us to source more quantity of market priced imported R-LNG, whose prices are currently on an upswing. This has affected our overall input cost by over 13%. In addition, there has also been an increase in the operating expenses.” |
