Drug peddlers roam free
Bathinda, November 22 Despite being caught by the police and cases registered against them the criminals continue to enjoy freedom after getting bail from the courts within few months after their arrest. The Bathinda police claim to arrest three persons who are habitual offenders and are booked under similar cases of NDPS Act at different police stations across Punjab. While one of them, Suba Singh of Jaimal Singhwala village is acquitted by court recently, the other accomplices, including Gajjan Singh of Moga and Gurtej Singh, yet to be arrested by the police, too, are booked numerous times earlier by the police for the similar offence. Ranjeet Singh, DSP (D), said the police were supposed to arrest the criminals and the rest depended upon the judicial system how long they kept such people behind the bars. The police, he said, were trying to ascertain other cases registered against them. Earlier, last week the counter intelligence wing of the police arrested an opium smuggler, who, too, was out on bail and was caught again by the police with huge quantity of 55 kg of opium. A Station House Officer (SHO) deployed in a city police station said earlier too similar incidents took place when the criminals arrested by the police were released on bail soon after the crime. "I was surprised to see a snatcher out on bail within less than one month from his arrest. There are many other criminals who, too, come out of jail soon after committing the crime," said the SHO, pleading anonymity. The policemen said though they try to make the case strong enough so that the criminals should not come out of the jail soon after their arrests but in most cases of the NDPS they usually managed to procure bail. "Once a person get himself involved in the drug trade he is likely to continue the illegal drug peddling. After coming out from jail most of the criminals carry on the illegal trade despite number of cases keep on piling up against them," the policemen said. |
